SUPERCUT The Riddler's Riddles in Batman (1966-1968) 

They didn't want Robin to be easily forgettable But if you want to get meta about it, maybe Batman is just the kind of person who's too smart; he can't wrap his head around the stupidity of Riddler's ridiculous riddles, so the Boy Wonder does it for him.

@@rikiishitoru8885 Smart idea, if you ask me. Robin plays the audience surrogate, so his child-like innocence can connect with kids, because when you have Robin solving the silly riddles, it makes kids feel empowered, because even they can understand the humor.

That is why the riddler episodes always made Robin more important.

Obviously, Batman wants Robin to solve the riddles because he has high expectations and knows Dick's smart enough to do it 😜

I’m being riddler for halloween and I’m gonna practice remembering riddles so if I see someone dressed up as Batman I shall run up to them and say “RIDDLE ME THIS BATMAN, I HAVE CITIES BUT NO HOUSES I HAVE MOUNTAINS BUT NO TREES, I HAVE WATER BUT NO FISH! WHAT AM I?” Sorry for all caps but he speaks rather loudly lol

Season 3 had a massively cut budget. I’m not sure they could’ve afforded Frank Gorshin for more than one episode at the increase pay.

It's a massive shame Frank Gorshin wasn't also the Riddler for the Puzzler episodes, too, since that episode was also written for him. I still think to this day he would've killed the actual Riddler episode in season 2, simply because that script had the most Riddler related stuff in it, namely his lair, his henchmen costumes, and his female sidekick costume, too! He could have easily used that cane twirl, and have that as an additional influence on the character post the show! Look, I like John Astin as an actor, but he ain't no Riddler. Nothing to do with his acting, but he just didn't resemble the character as much as Frank did. I also wish he had at least as many appearances on the show as the Joker, the Penguin, and Catwoman (I also wish the same for Mr. Freeze and Mad Hatter). On an unrelated note, if only the "That Darn Catwoman/Scat! Darn Catwoman" episode was the title of another Catwoman episode where she was partnered with the Riddler and the Bookworm, since both Frank and Roddy McDowell were in "That Darn Cat" in 1965, which was a Disney release by the director of Mary Poppins.

And that’s why I loved this scene. Batman making a bad riddle just to tease the Riddler, and then using Riddler’s tricks against him made this scene my favorite of all the 1966 Batman episodes.

Comes from the golden age comics where being in school permitted Robin to know all the random trivia. Now Batman just has all the knowledge in the world or something.

I have a headcanon that Batman isn't good at Riddles. He almost always lets Robin answer, then tells him he got it right. I love some of Robin's answers though. Completely nonsensical at times. The movie one "what sits in a tree, weighs 10 ounces and is extremely dangerous? A sparrow with a machine gun!" If Riddler expects other people to guess the answer to that, he's the sort of crazy that has probably got a suit made of household pets. My other headcanon is that they're guessing the completely wrong answer when they come up with something weird, but they get arse-backwards lucky and end up in the right place. One day, Riddler will ask them to show their working out and realise they're lucky idiots.

My head canon is that Batman just wants Robin to have a part in solving, kinda like a parent getting their kid to be involvement in the group activities , since most of riddlers riddles are often using a various things that were somewhat new in the 60’s, Robin being the one who grew up with most of the things that his older peers had trouble with, kinda how now boomer parents don’t seem to understand how a tablet works despite that they have a longer time to understand it while current middle schoolers can do a slideshow project on the app with little issue. Just seeing Robin getting the upper hand in the adventure would have Batman going “that’s my boy! I thought him that” like a proud parent. While modern Batman can solve them himself (since he has experience with the items that would have been related to the riddles vs his silver age era counterpart & that he could just have gotten his share of hearing them before.
