I used to watch Big Chuck and Little John on Friday nights and then wake up and watch Super host on Saturday afternoons....what a great time to grow up...I miss these classic shoes. The world was a better place, and the people were a better sort too.
Used to love this back in Cleveland Heights in the 1970s. That bionic woman skit he did always had me dying. Big Chuck/Little John Friday night, then this on Saturday, you just couldn't beat it.
R.I.P. Ole friend. Supe's Convoy skit never gets old. This is sad to watch. I met him in 97. He was a FB friend some time before he died. We miss and love ya Supe!
One of the saddest things I remember about growing up in Columbus. Fritz on Friday night, and Supe on Saturday. I was just about to graduate high school when this happened. Awful.
I used to love to watch Superhost every Saturday. All those Godzilla movies he showed... I can't stand to watch one now. Heh heh. WUAB 43 had the best Saturday lineup till late evening during the 70's and 80's. Miss those days.
This is at the time when the ownership of Channel 43 switched hands from Gaylord Broadcasting Company to Cannell Communications. Martin Sullivan is the best voiceover announcer ever!
Hey I am running Camera One outside the theater! Shortly after we taped this last episode Marty had a heart attack. This was a very very sad time at WUAB. Gaylord sold the station to Cannell Broadcasting and they came in and canceled all of the local shows except for the news. The last Barnaby shows was so sad too, he walked off the set into the bushes and just wept.
I can remember watching Big Chuck & Hoolihan on Friday nights & when that was over they did this thing called 8 All Night with movies till sun up. Mostly it was the old Bowery Boys with Huntz Hall & Leo Gorcey in black N white. Then on Saturday's watching Supes On, followed by the roller derby with the Fabulous Thunderbirds & then capping off Saturday nights with pro rasslin as we would call it. Then we would either head out to the lake to watch the sunrise on Sunday mornings or we would go to the roller skating rink or pile everyone in the trunk of the car & only have to pay for 2 adult admissions to the drive in. ABSOLUTE GREAT TIMES back then. Today's kids & generation not only has no clue on what they missed, but they can take all their fancy electronics & shove it. lol Even the music back then was better than today's crap. Damn am I ever glad I grew up in a world that was fun. Nowadays it flat out sucks. Go figure.
defiantone God if I could go back to those days I'd do it in a heartbeat! Everything is total garbage now! The whole way of life was better. I guess back then they would say the 50's we're a innocent time. The way the world is now any time besides now was a more innocent time. Also more people cared and had respect for people! This world is going to hell and it's just sad!
@@fhb3 Yeah, they were funny as all can be. Especially when they were in one of those haunted houses or mansions. lol Lucky me, I happen to have em on dvd. Now I can relive all the old times just like it was yesterday!
There was a lot of creativity in TV programming back when hosts like Supe, The Ghoul, and Hoolihan & Big Chuck were on the air. TV today is sadly lacking,as are the movies Hollywood churns out. There are no local TV programs on anymore worth watching. Thanks for posting this!!
I used to watch this show growing up. I loved the Stooges, and the corny SiFi movies that came after. Almost 30yrs later and every time they play an old Godzilla movie I think of Super Host.
I remember watching him as a little kid... No thanks to bitching parents.. kids will never know what a real weekend of fun really is.... Will forever love Super Host....
The management ended the show in a really sleazy manner. They said there would be a surprise next week. Then next week arrives and they say the show is finished permanently.
If I remember correctly, WKBF Channel 61 did the exact same thing to "The Ghoul". As I recall, The Ghoul said on his last show that the next week's show was going to be a big surprise. That was the end of The Ghoul on 61. That is just so wrong to do that to both the talent and the viewers.
I watched him every Saturday and Big Chuck & Hoolihan Friday nights then Lil John after Hoolihan left.I blew up many a model cars because of the Ghoul. I grew up in Meadville Crawford County Pa. My kids thought it was "weird" when I showed them these clips
@jethropu I'm 33 (three years after you wrote this) and this puts a tear in my eye thinking of how my dad and I would watch Superhost on Saturdays and I got my Three Stooges and Laurel & Hardy and Godzilla education from those shows. I always LOVED The Moronic Woman!!! I never knew how spoiled this area was to have such great artists!
I used to live in Middleburg Hts., on the border of Strongsville, and I used to see him jogging around the neighborhood from time to time...I used to watch the show every Saturday, and I do think his show , simple as it was, was some of the best local programming ANYWHERE!
I remember this!!! I remember when they had him, Barnaby and somebody else on all at the same time and thinkin that was the coolest thing ever. I was like 7 or 8 at the time.
Damn! Supe, along with John Lannigan,Big Chuck and Little John and Rich Morgan are some of my favorite memories of Cleveland. Also The Abbott and Costello Film Festival on Sundays!
Thank you for posting this. I grew up in Columbus and Supe came to us when cable TV first arrived in the mid-70's. Seeing this washes away 35 years and brings a warm smile.
Jason Baldridge,I was 17 too when Superhost ended. Like many have written here as a kid I would watch Big Chuck and Lil John Friday night and then watch Supe's On Saturday. Fond memories!😀
After watching the new Godzilla, which totally gave me my SuperHost feels, I came looking for a bit of my childhood, and here it is! Fond memories of watching Godzilla movies with my big bro after my Saturday morning lineup of cartoons was over. Those were the days....
Good ol SuperHost. I was born in Elyria, and lived on IRONDALE, WEST RIVER, and TEDMAN, until I was 5 1/2. I I saw him ONCE in 1981, and never again. I never knew how long he was on until JUST NOW. I still miss SuperHost.
I have very fond memories of watching Supe on Saturdays when I visited my grandparents house in good 'ole Uhrichsville Ohio. Of course I watched Hoolihan on Friday night and The Ghoul on Saturday night. What a terrific lineup of shows. TV today is nothing but reality s**t. There is no imagination in TV or movies anymore...sad!!! What ever happened to Marty Sullivan?
Growing up in the late 70s and 80s, I watched a lot of Superhost. Didn't live in Cleveland, grew up in Columbus, but fortunately we had cable TV and watched Superhost on there.
Trivia: The music (clarinet, chimes, tuba etc.) behind Supe's segments is "Clinkerated Chimes" by Bernie Green and his Stereo MAD-Men from the Musically MAD album on RCA Victor from 1959. (yes, the one with the huge smiling Alfred E Neuman on the cover). Miss ya Supe!!
Wow, I remember watching Supe on Saturdays when I was in college up in Wooster! I was too young for Ghoulardi (alas) and grew up on The Ghoul via syndication to channels 20 and 50 in Detroit (I'm from Toledo originally). TV used to be so much better...
Last night I was telling my fiancee about Superhost. She said there's probably some clips on RU-vid. She was right. Thank you so much. I remember the Godzilla and Gamera movies the most.
Superhost did show a Godzilla or Gamera movie from time to time but there was another back then as well. It was Channel 61. That was the channel that showed the Ghoul on Saturday nights. But during Saturday afternoons from 12 to 2:30 on Channel 61 they had a segment called creature feature. That's what showed nearly all the Godzilla and Gamera movies. And sometimes even Frankenstein and Dracula too. Like you I miss those days.
You and me both. :-p Remember how this and WSEE 35 from Erie would never come in on days when it was raining? Pissed me off because I'd want to watch GI Joe.
My kids don't know what they are missing. We were so lucky to have SuperHost, Houlihan and Big Chuck/Big Chuck and Little John, and the Ghoul. I even remember Ghoulardi, but not much. I miss those B-movies.
Wow! Can't believe WUAB reached so many. So far.📡 Does anyone remember the "new" girl whom had a WUAB 43 kids-show from 1986-89 when most local WUAB programming was shut-down? She had curly hair & a high voice.
It was a really sad day at WUAB, "Superhost" ended after 20 years at the station, (although Marty Sullivan remained at the station as a staff announcer until 1993). Around that time, WUAB was sold from Gaylord Broadcasting to Cannell Communications (owned by the late Stephen J. Cannell), not long after that, "Barnaby" (the late Linn Sheldon) ended after a long run in Cleveland television. Now all they play today is crappy shows, sad.
There was another tv station back during that time as well. Do you remember tv station Channel 61? On Saturday nights it showed the Ghoul. On Saturday afternoons from 12 to 2:30 Channel 61 had a segment called Creature Feature. It showed nearly all the Godzilla movies and other Japaneese monsters as well. And sometimes showed the karate and kung fu movies as well. That was the channel I watched Bruce Lee on.
@wsp136 I never saw all of this, because my mother shut the TV off on me because she HATED Superhost (not as much as she HATED The Ghoul and Big Chuck & Lil' Jon). But from what little I saw that day, I had a very STRONG feeling that he was extremely PISSED OFF. They NEVER should have ended that show, because WUAB's weekend programming went straight to hell from that point.
I is now December of 2019. I assume Marty Sullivan is .... you know, "Gone". Do you know what he did after he left WUAB 43? Or, why he moved to Oregon?
Martin Sullivan deserved better. People were still tuning in, so what excuses did the new owners have in doing this? They still showed some of the films that had been on "SuperHost" on Saturday afternoons. Why not include that guy who hosted these films?
used to live next to marty sullivan. he was the worst neighbor ever always very creepy and loved to stare at you from over his fence complained everytime kids played in front of our house he wasnt the sweet kooky guy you see here a total weirdo in real life
