This scene alone proves why the Richard Donner cut is the BEST version of this movie, if not the BEST Superman film of all time. Mr. Reeve and Mr. Brando gave some of the finest performances so their careers in this film and it's a shame that neither of them lived to see it.
It still needed a rewrite. After we saw Superman catch a bullet, he wouldn't have been fooled by blanks, no matter how much Donner loved that scene. She should have tried to cut him in his sleep. Also, the turn-back-time idea was pretty iffy. In his version Lois wouldn't have died, there wouldn't have been a satisfactory ending to Superman I, and it would be silly in Superman II, without filming the destruction or burning of Tokyo and Moscow, which were in the script. Also, the kiss was dumb, if emotional.
ffs, the entire Donner cut was an unfinished, unpolished, trainwreck, which did more to destroy the two 70's Superman films than anything else ever could.
@@sandal_thong8631 we don't discuss Superman III or IV, such evil rumors are just that - Rumors. Those films do not exist, as no studio would ever allow them to be made
"Look at me, Kal-El" That there is the most commanding voice ever, Marlon Brando was the greatest fucking actor ever!!!!!! R.I.P to him and Christopher Reeve :'(
Christopher Reeve was and always will be Clark Kent/Kal-El/Superman to me. He's the best version there's ever been in movies, cartoons, tv shows or comic books. R.I.P Christopher Reeve, Marlon Brando & Margot Kidder.
Both versions gives the whole,"Once it is done there can be no return," thing, but in the original cut the return loophole was accidental; Lois set down the green crystal and spaced it, so when the control panel exploded it wasn't in there. It responds to Clark when he returns and then..just somehow offscreen it made him Superman again. I like that this version gives you more of an explanation.
I am watching this scene again, and I can't get over what a wonderful and loving father Superman has for his father. Jor-El always says "my son." Wow. And Marlon Brando makes this scene all that more powerful. WOW.
This sequence has an amazing Biblical reference of how the prodigal son returns to his father. And another reference of how much Jesus loves us that He gave his life for our sins. Wow! Amazing and powerful. The JESUS SUPERMAN.
After 12 years of re-education by Jor-El to turn him into Kal-El, he mostly listened to his father. He revealed himself to the world as Superman, though his father didn't think that was a great idea. And even when he didn't take his advice about Lois, he still did what he was told and lost his powers. After this he gets to be his own man.
@@sesfilmsllc Moses is more Abrahamic (Jewish-Christian-Islamic) though. Kal-El's seen more as a Jesus-like figure sent by his "heavenly" father Jor-El to save humanity...that's specifically Christian
@@AshrafAnam yeah I've always felt so too. Snyder messed it up in my opinion with his version. He tried too hard with all the Christlike poses he had cavil doing in man of steel
@@AshrafAnam The problem with Kal-El being a Jesus-like figure is that Christians consider the person Jesus to be incapable of sin, whereas Kal-El has clearly made a mistake which he is now trying to fix. I think this puts him more in line with Biblical figures like King David, who also made a very, very bad mistake involving a woman.
Such a powerful sequence. If I had my way, I would edit this into the theatrical version of Superman II, along with the Donner style opening credits and we'd have the definitive cut of the film.
IronDawg I agree...this was the only part to me that adds meaning to the theatrical....if this line was in the theatrical...SUPERMAN 2 would be perfect!!!!
I like the line, "The big one is as strong as Superman," with Lois shoving her, as well as him being slammed into Liberty's Torch, but they are mutually exclusive.
This is what I mean when I say "I want to see Superman talks to his father." Christopher Reeve will always be the only Superman an Marlon Brando was and will always be the father. What a set of great actor's Thank You Loader.
Marlin Brando it's amazing they got him to play in a comic book movie Brando, and Hackman were both super stars in those years. Today I don't think any comic book movie will ever have that kind of caliber of actors in them.
Its more about the vision of the filmmakers and the producers and less about the actors. The actors were masters, sure, but this was conceived and executed as an epic and that shows
Not sure if you are kidding with your question, but it would have cost studio & producers an ENORMOUS amount of $$$$ to include the Brando material (reportedly 11.75% of gross U.S. box-office takings). I think the Salkinds got greedy and scared when they resumed finishing 'Superman II', cutting costs in a lot of areas- Margot Kidder's salary I heard got skimmed, composer Ken Thorne worked with a 70 piece orchestra vs the 104 person LSO that Williams had.
RNeelymedia And let's not forget the Screw Job Alexander and Ilyad Salkind did to Richard Donner himself. Firing him while during the making of Superman 2. Fresh of the enormous critical and box office success of Superman:The Movie. The Salkinds felt the need to let go the Director responsible for the first film iconic brilliance?? And hire Richard Lester as the replacement? Well we saw how bad Superman 3 turned out. Thank God the Donner Superman 2 was officially released.
Yeah the Salklinds got super greedy and cheap after the release of part 1, which is a damn shame, because while Superman 2 is an overall great sequel, Donner’s completed version would have been a masterpiece and set an early standard to telling super hero stories on the big screen
I love this scene, because it's the redemption of the son towards the father, like the prodigal son. Personally, it opened my spirit for what I had done wrong in my life.
Far out man!!! I was watching Superman II RD Cut and when this came up, I was tearing up. Such subtlety in his acting. Effortlessly owns the film. I honestly don't get why some people hate Brando. Do you? I mean, he is the greatest actor of all time literally!
I've been imagining a version of Bizarro that gets hit by the Kryptonite Meteor on his way to Earth and has a developmental disability. His youth is different but he goes to create the Fortress of Solitude, however he doesn't agree with Jor-El's teachings and fights his re-education plan. So would Jor-El try to imprison him there? Could have been a good Earth-2 story or whatever letter/number.
I miss Chris reeve if he is in heaven i would wanna no if I could give him a big hug and tell him that I love him and I love his wife and just to hug them because they mean that much to me
Absolutely amazing! Probably one of the best moments in Superman, if not all cinematic, history. I love films and the relationships, and lack thereof, of Kal'el and his father is a major reason why.
star trek I'd say the Lester version released in theater's is the better version. The Doner cut does has its positives but, the cut has choppy editing and missing action sequences. (30 years had passed) It was still great to see the unused footage though.
Just watched this the other night at a special anniversary screening. I was blown away by this scene. As a son and now father I found this scene to be very emotional.
I have always love this scene, becoz it is so touching. I miss my Father...i can no longer see him nor hear him again.......i cried for him when i fail in life.
Happy Faaaaaaaaaather's Day, Jor-el! "Once before when you were small I died while giving you a chance for life. And now, even though it will exhaust the final energy left within me -- look at me, Kal-el -- the Kryptonian prophecy will be at last fulfilled: the son becomes tne father, the father becomes the son. Farewell forever, Kal-el. Remember me, my son." #Superman #ChristopherReeve #MarlonBrando #Superman2 #DonnerCut
the most powerful piece of a super hero film, it is moving and most of all its real, did you ever imagine to see Superman so personally vulnerable, i cringe at the emotion LONG LIVE DC LONG LIVE SUPERMAN the greatest comic hero EVER!!!
No other Superman film will ever come close to the movies of my youth I was 15 in 1978 when I saw the first one and 17 in 1980 when I saw the second Superman movie
All the director's cut for Superman 2 should have been was adding the material with Brando and other bits that would have added more to the story, and not tinkered with the film so much that it becomes more of a blueprint than a real film.
Tree Slayer Actually, scout ship 0344 in Man Of Steel is considered the "modern" fortress of solitude. He meets Jor-ell there. Kal-el's interactions with Jor in Man of Steel are essentially the same ones here. They're just newer with different actors. Do you remember when Kal moves te ship to that secluded mountainous are. Well, you can consider that the "fortress if solitude." Similar to the orginal superman movies, Kal-El learns about his origins and his earthly purpose and becomes superman. "Taaadaaaaa!!!"
Years ago, I had a pen holder that was made of three plexiglass tubes that were stuck together. Everytime I slid a pen down into them, I thought of the Fortress of Solitude.
Like me agree for my Dad to be taken to palliative care, when they said it would be for rehab. But it was just a trick, and they euthanized him instead.
The thing is, as much as I love the Donner vision, this wasn't what I saw when my dad took me to the cinema. The things you see as a 8 year old stays with you. The Lester vision will aways be THE version.
Something they should have left in the movie instead of just leaving it at with him finding and picking up the crystal. Granted we all knew he was getting his powers back, but this really should have stayed included in the movie
WOW!! I never saw this scene! I always wanted to know how the HELL he got his powers since all you saw was him finding the green crystal and staring at it. gotta get this movie! Thanks for sharing1
This film and the sequel where one of the was one of the best Superman films ever made back in the 70s its arguably the best of all of the Superman films ever made. I remembered it like yesterday. I guess I'm telling my age huh? anywho you should see it on huge screen with surrounding for the best movie experience. Too bad Christopher Reeves died May he rest in piece.
This version is so much more meaningful than the Lester version. It never loses sight of the emotional aspects of being an exile in effect, from a place and a people that no longer exist and how this plays out in father-son relationships etc. Marlon Brando was worth every penny, he imbues the role of Kal-El with so much feeling.
I read somewhere that if you use Hebrew to translate the name Kal-El, it literally means "Voice of God", and Jor-El means "Rain of God" when you use Hebrew to translate it.
