People in the 80s: wow, Superman killed Zod, I did NOT expect that, what a great movie. People in 2013: Superman killed Zod!? What the heck!? Superman doesn't kill!!!
If you watch movies from back then, people get killed off left and right and even off screen. It's just never graphic because that would require extra SFX work.
Cavil's Superman had no other option left than to snap Zod's neck(a Family was in danger the same way Jim Gordon's son was when Batman killed HIS TRAUMATIZED AND DESFIGURED FRIEND in the DarKnight Movie and became everybody's Favourite Hero)WITHOUT ACCESS TO THE PHANTOM ZONE ANYMORE TO SEND A GENOCIDAL MANIAC who stated that he would keep fighting to the end and kill every human one by one, the only option left was killing him...and Man of Steel did it quickly with only one snap(check how Superman did it in the comics)...Here we saw how Christopher Reeve's Superman broke without any need, the hand and spine of a Powerless villian and throw him to the ice where he would die of cold. People in the 80s (Superman 2): Oh, that Zod guy lost his powers and was arrested. People in 2006 (Superman 2 Donner Cut): Oh, Superman killed Zod but then reversed time to bring him back to life. People in 2013: Ooh, snap.
I remember being a kid in the 80s watching this and for some weird reason nobody made a big deal about Superman killing Zod back then ,but you they made a big deal about Henry Cavill killing him, in Man of Steel

the key point in you comment there. Deleted. as in not part of the movie. also i have seen that scene. not once did i see zod or the other 2. it was lex luthor who was arrested. and lastly there is liturally no way he could of survived. the crushing of his hand like that would cause bloodvessels to burst and the pain would of put him in shock.
8th wonder of the world dude, it's a fucking movie with aliens that get powers from the sun. And you trying to put reality in it to make sense. Good luck.
I'll have you know that, according to Margot Kidder (Lois Lane), during one of the takes when filming that scene she actually accidentally hit Sarah Douglas (Ursa) "a little too hard", knocking her unconscious.
THE POLICE SAVED URSA WITH THEIR CRASH MATS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND THEN WHY SHE WAY TRIED IN COURT, SHE WAS IMPRISONED IN THE WHITE HOUSE, AND WHEN BILL CLINTON CAME TO POWER, HE HAD HER CHAINED TO THE WALL OF THE OVAL OFFICE SO HE COULD FEEL HER BREASTS ON A DAILY BASIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, so people bitch about Cavill killing zod. Let's look. 1980: Superman breaks every single bone in his hand and throws him, screaming in pain off a massive cliff. 2013: Superman begs and pleads for Zod to not kill the humans, yet zod still attempts to do it. Superman breaks his neck, before falling to the ground while crying, as he has killed the last living Kryptonian and he had no choice.
Another thing is this version 4 super humans flew around fighting no damage no one got hurt at least in mos there's some reality in the fight buildings crashing people were freaking out not cheering and watching
So let me get this straight zod losses his power, superman crushescrushes zods hand, send him flying into a wall breaking his back and let him fall down a hole in the ice fortress. But thats all fine, atleast he didnt snap zod neck to prevent him from killing some humans with his heat vision.
If this came out today, all the fanboys would call Superman a sadist & a murderer because he could've easily kept all three of his fellow Kryptonians alive after rendering them powerless.

@@TheFLAMEXDSuperman didn't kill Zod in the Donner cut, and I noticed that this scene conveniently doesn't show the part where Superman reversed time and sent the Kryptonians back to the phantom zone.
I'm not sure why it's so hard for people to understand that Reeves and Cavill are portraying different versions of Superman. Reeves!Superman is Silver Age Superman: He has powers up the wazoo, is usually much more experienced, and deals with villains through zany schemes and even crazier application of super-powers. Often he would use new super powers on the spot to solve an issue and those powers are never mentioned or used again. His adventures are often charming, low-stakes, and fun spectacle. Cavill!Superman is New 52/Bronze Age Superman: This Superman is a deliberate callback to Superman when he first premiered in the 30's and 40's. He's much more rough around the edges and uses his strength to solve issues. He's still ultimately benevolent but is more likely to lay out a villain with a punch than trick him. New 52 Superman is pretty new in his role as Earth's protector and his adventures come with the question of how best to use his powers while still earning and maintaining the trust of humanity. His is a more traditional character arc where he has flaws, makes mistakes, and learns from them. Both versions are still Superman. And to say one version is more "true" the character doesn't really make sense. Superman is a character that has had 80+ years of publication history. Through those 80 years he has had a number of personalities, personas, and attitudes. The core of the character remains the same, but Superman killing Zod is still as true to his character (he killed him in the comics through exposure to Kryptonite, a much more deliberate and agonizing death than either snapping his neck or throwing him to his death) as sending him back to the Phantom Zone.
Bronze age Superman is far superior than the "bronze age" we got in MoS. It true to be realistic when the bronze age did it better while maintaining his personality in tact.
So even in the comics he STILL kills him one way or another, well then there is no issue here because it is being true to the material then. Besides while the comics can bring other options to defeat a villain man of steel had a clear point, what happens when one almost invincible force wishes to kill everybody and has no reason to stop? killing was the only option there, and if it happened in the original material as well then there is no reason to get angry about it.
So he murdered Zod, Louis Murders the other chick and the other dude accidentally kills himself. If he's okay with killing a depowered Zod in cold blood why does he not kill Lex Luthor?
It’s crazy how people call the 2013 Superman a murderer but zod wanted to erase the human population and he wouldn’t stop at anything until he did. It’s either take out the threat or let it keep coming back.
It's interesting that Superman killed Zod in the comics, about eight years later, under similar circumstances, but treated with the gravity it deserves. Superman exposes Zod and two of his followers to gold Kryptonite, which has the same effect as the red chamber in Superman II. Zod implies there's a way for it to be reversed and Superman says, as the last survivor of Krypton he holds the right to serve as sole judge of their punishment... and he declares death. The decision haunts him for years afterwards. I always figured it was a response to how cavalier he was about it in here.
In Superman II, Superman kills Zod by breaking his hand and dropping him off a cliff with a smile on his face. In Man of Steel, Superman breaks Zod's neck while he kills him. It's a sudden realization that he killed one of his kind, and he's the only survivor of the planet Krypton. That's why he screamed out in anguish. What's the reason why Superman snapped Zod's neck, you may ask? "NEVER." Zod wasn't going to stop tormenting the people that Superman was trying to protect. Superman II is fun to watch, but Man of Steel makes more sense, and it's more emotional.
I don't know why everyone keeps pushing this weird idea that Cavill's Superman cared at all about kryptoninans. He didn't try and reason with Zod like Jor-El did about coexistence. He wasn't excited in the slightest once he found out there were beings like him and he hardly gave destroying the world engine a second thought. His "scream of anguish" was from the realization that he just snapped a man's neck. The same man that murdered his biological father, threatened Martha, Lois, and was about to destroy all life on earth. That's what makes Clark's following reaction beautiful because despite everything, he didn't want to be forced to kill someone and certainly did not want his grand unveiling of hopeful "Superman" to turn out like it did.
Bu.......but he just killed them and is even smiling afterwards. NOT MU SUPERMAN. Seriously, people fucking scream about Snyder ruining Superman by having him kill Zod while praising the Reeve Superman (who I love btw). Jesus, nostalgia is a powerful thing.
Koba yeah, even after all the horrendous things Zod did in MoS Superman still begged him to stop. In this he renders them powerless and kills them with a grin.
Christopher Reeves embodied everything that Superman was, his charisma, purity, virtue and integrity. He was the classic and best version in my opinion! Killing Zod was necessary because the kryptonian was willing to subjugate the Earth and kill innocents to accomplish his goals.
Embodied everything about superman so he teach kids to physically harm people regular humanswhen u have tge powers of a god and that's OK yet when superman in man of steel restrains himself after a perve pushes him and soaks him and mind you he's not evan at the state of life reeves superman is at he just casually leaves and messes up his truck and yet people think cavils superman is Hitler for doing that yet reeves superman beat up regular people while having his powers and being a much older superman much mature one and people praise it lol moving on reeves superman crushes and breaks the hand of a powerless zod and breaks his spine basically tourchering an defenseless none threat none powerd zod than sends him to his death and shortly after shows no remorse for killing just smiles and people like you d rides and praise it when he could have sent zod to jail because apparently "superman never killssss" and yet in man of steel zod HAS HIS POWERS AND CAN STILL DESTROY MILLIONS OF HUMANS and has made it clear he won't stop from killing every human inless Kal kills him and as he's about to disintegrate a family of 4 or was it 5 superman begs him like 4 times to stop BEEGGGS HIM HARRRD and than kills him quickly and after is in DEEEP PAIN and he actually showes it yet yall lable man of steels superman an evil villain an immoral monster for what he couldn't help Yet yall call reeves superman a Saint for torchuering and than droping a powerLESS zod to his death with a broken spine lets the other one unknowingly fall to his death and have his girl kill tye other kryptonian and like 8 seconds after they all tell jokes and smile mcu style after killing 3 people who had no powers
Could Superman have precluded Zod and the others' resourcefulness; and shut off forever the way to get their powers back? If yes according to his demonstrated rules of ethical engagement, Superman is a murderer!
There'll never be superman films like the donner ones. Perfectly cast, using the finest of practical fx.The cinematography and colour grading in the donner cut is perfect just like superman the movie. All the colours especially on superman's suit just looks amazing.
because of this scene, I don't see why people get worked up over Superman killing Zod in Man of Steel when it's not thefirst time he did it in a movie....plus these are Movies we are talking about. It's an entertainment business and the creative liberties they take are all in the name of producing quality works of storytelling and cinematic art (or at least when it's done right)

So what's more out of character of superman : Kill a powerful maniac who's about to kill a family after giving him every chance to do so OR Kill the powerless maniac by throwing him to a pit of nothingness ?
Ok, here's another comment comparing this to man of steel! (Even though we've already had enough) In this movie, Clark clearly has no problems with beating the shit out of Zod, and even if he doesn't actually kill him (like some people were saying in the comments), he still would've done it. However, Cavill's Superman DOESN'T want to kill Zod. For all he knows, that's probably the only one of his kind that's still alive (after he destroyed the ship with the baby making machine, or whatever it's called), and when Zod starts using his Lazer vision to kill that family, we realize that no matter what Clark does Zod will keep on going until every single human has been destroyed. No, it wouldn't change a thing if Clark threw Zod into the moon or whatever, not killing Zod meant that he would just come back and continue his slaughter. His death was the ONLY option. So in conclusion: Clark from Superman 2 has no problems with killing Zod, while the Clark from Man Of Steel does.
Idk why those stupid boomers can't understand this, I mean no one's hating any of two superman here for killing, but those snowflakes just felt offended when cavill's superman killed. Superman has killed in comics(canon) Superman has killed old movies Superman has killed in modern movies... There's nothing new here that should make anyone critical.
@@himanshukaushal3885 Superman 2 script - Zod lives Superman 2 Directors cut - Zod lives Deleting a scene, whether people like it or not, doesnt magically change the dimensions of the fortress. The whole reason they shot the scene of Zod getting arrested is because OBVIOUSLY.....FREAKIN OBVIOUSLY this version of Superman wouldn't kill Zod & he certainly wouldn't smile as Lois murders someone. Its just plain dumb to interpret it as Lois murdering. They deleted the scene of them being arrested as its unnecessary. Pacing works better without the scene. I dont care at all if he killed Zod. I'm just saying one has to be intentionally misunderstanding everything this director was going for to truly believe he made Lois a murderer. The villians are DEFEATED and the movie moves towards its conclusion. We dont need to see Supes fly to get the arctic police and help ZOD & co get arrested. It drags the ending down
@@integrity101 You're incredibly ignorant. Or just really stupid. It doesn't matter what the script says. That did not translate to the big screen. The original theatrical cut shows Zod and his lackeys falling into a bottomless pit. There is no "magical" change to the fortress, because they were never changed in the first place. It doesn't matter how you think it was framed. The intention might have been for Zod to survive but the director clearly decided that it wasn't worth it. Also, you're only half-right about the director's cut - Zod only lives in some versions because Superman reversed time (again) and erased the entire events of the movie. That whole Arctic Police BS? Never made into either of those cuts. Only ever appeared in TV slots and even then those were rare. There is no misunderstanding here. We don't see Superman fly off to get the police. We just see him fly off. And even if he did fly to get the police, who do you think they're coming for? Not Zod, you dolt. For LUTHOR. The ending is dependent what is shown and there is nothing that shows the Kryptonians surviving this.
I just found how hilariously backward is when we think about it. This superman had a depowered Zod, kills him, and smiles! AND EVERYBODY LOVES IT, while in Man of steel Zod clearly said he wouldn't stop until every single human was dead, his neck being snapped was more than justified AND PEOPLE HATED IT! What sense does that make? this Sups is basically a cold-blooded murderer, and people are ok with that! EVEN LANE KILLS HERE!
Because he is silver age Superman. He can go overboard a bit because anyways he can turn back time and undo it. And that is exactly what he did. Plus the rendition is supposed to be a bit on the comical end. Look at Lex Luther and his sidekicks in this movie and compare that with Batman vs Superman Lex Luthor. Today's movies are supposed to be dark and realistic. Different from the comic fun types of yesteryears.
@@gamer-ff6mh So what if they are darker? The point being that if killing in the silver age was ok, then killing should STILL be ok to this day! or what are you gonna tell me that there is no modern comics in which superman kills? Just because this one can turn back time doesn't mean the viewer completely forgets that sups still killed Zod, even without powers which was totally unnecessary then.
Superman 2 has heart and is a well made film. Man of Steel is a long, loud CGI spectacle with no emotion. Thats the difference. Christopher Reeves was likable and charming. Henry Cavil was wooden and depressing. For the record Zod didn't die in Superman 2.
I love the fact that not only does he kill them, but he then turns around and blows up their bodies along with the Fortress of Solitude just to make sure they're dead! This Superman doesn't fuck around!

Ah Superman II, the Whedon vs Snyder of my parents’ grneration. Supes kills in the theatrical because Joss Lester gave no fucks about the mythos. Zack Donner gave us s much more emotional and sad climax, with Supes destroying his Fortress now that Jor-El is gone forever and Lex (and the Arctic Police!) know it’s locstion. Plus Supes initially leaving Lois’s memory intact to trust her with his secrets but never being able to be together again. A victory that came with some heavy costs.
He took the battle away from the city to protect the public. He realized that he could not defeat them will their powers. He came up with a plan to take away their powers. He knew Lex will betray him and he pretended to lose his powers. He used his mind to outthink them.

"So, the bodies." "What bodies?" "You know, the three bodies of your enemies that we killed the other day. They fell to their deaths in that crevice right there. Should we, like, clean up the place? In case we have a dinner party here or something." "Nah. But we should install a guardrail for sure. That fall there could kill you."
When I was a kid, I always wondered why Zod and co weren't in regular clothes when their powers were removed, or at least how the machine "knew" to change Superman's outfit to a normal white shirt and black pants after being depowered.
I'm thinking the first scene was like an analogy or representation of what was happening. Since it didn't repeat here, it's kind of incongruous and much as I liked it, should be removed.
Actually, if you look at the scene, Superman and Lois are hugging by the ocean (filled with icebergs), so it is possible (in a comic book world) that Zod and friends slid down the ice wall and into the ocean where they froze, like Captain America.
After all the epic battles with bad guys, this poignant little exchange between Lois and Superman is very important - it brings the film back to reality, reminding us that these are real people with complicated emotions, and their romance is the true heart and soul of the story. … Then along comes Richard Lester and sucks all the heart and soul out of the film.
