Superman's Only Onscreen Kiss

By Saturday, August 18, 1951, Superman, Inc. was nearing the half-way point in production of the first season. As was the custom in 1951, parts of several different episodes were filmed at the same time, and on this particular date, many of the process shots were filmed. First there was Kent and Hadley in the cockpit of the plane ("The Mind Machine"). Then George Reeves got into the uniform to deliver his warning to Connie and Ace atop the mountain ("The Stolen Costume"). And finally it was time for Kathy Williams (Isa Ashdown) to get her Metropolis fly-over and to give our hero his only onscreen kiss of the series ("The Birthday Letter"). But that's not all that went before the cameras on August 18. Also filmed were Perkins' reaction to Cusak's murder and his subsequent conversation with Kent. You can read more about that day here: www.jimnolt.com...

Even today, Superman still reflects the wholesomeness of the show and of the era it was made. It's sad to see how far we've fallen in today's socitety and moral climate. We can learn a lot from Superman.

@@johnmc3862 I agree, Christopher Reeve was perfect for the role of Superman in every way!!. George Reeves, a good actor in other parts but wrong for Superman. He did not have the famous trade mark curl, his face was too rounded, he looked a bit fat. The costume was all wrong. Christopher Reeve actually resembles the Superman in the comics, an uncanny likeness, something that George Reeves and every other actor that played it simply doesn't have. Christopher Reeve most certainly did take over as the most iconic Superman of all, reaching top position in every poll. George Reeves only comes above Dean Cain as the worst Superman, not even close to Christopher Reeve, not even worthy of being in the same list.

Thanks. Several years ago, in a conversation with Isa Ashdown, I asked if she was told to give George a kiss or if it was spontaneous. She couldn't remember but that didn't matter to her. It was nice either way. I also sent her a copy of the episode which she shared with her grown children. They had never seen it before.

Me too my friend. I'm 67 and watch it on Sundays on HERO TV. This one gets to me a lot. It seemed so real. She's an adorable little girl and she excuded the excitment of having Superman taking her around the world. The little kiss was just right to show the love. For this alone, I know in my heart George was murdered. He would never do that to the kids.

Ended up the "hood" was a softy and didn't want the little girl hurt. She spoke up for the after he protected her from the real bad guys. That one got to me too. The sweetness of kids melts my heart. I apprenticed under an old WWII Navy SeaBee carpenter who was a drinking and brawling buddy of George Reeves, George was a house guest of Toni Mannix who was married to MGM film boss Eddie Mannix, My Dad was doing a cabinet job for a contractor who was remodeling the Mannix home. At this time George was giving it to Toni and Eddie was doing the Japanese housemaid. Anyway, "Harley", my Dad's employee at the time got to be friends with George. Harley wasn't s big man but he was fearless and would take on any body while George was a tough dude himself. Harley told me later that he and George would go out drinking and womanizing and if any body got in their way they would clean their clock. I learned tons about carpentry from old Harley and I later became a master carpenter, drinker, and woman chaser like my mentor. I will never forget old "HO", (Harley Oscar Green).
