I always found the conclusion to this story tear jerking, not gunna lie. I always liked Judd Winick's Green Lantern stuff. He is a gem cause he always managed to weave in these very real moments with his characters.

It really is good. Shazam the Wizard expresses so well that he knows Superman is right, he even started the comic bemoaning the inevitability of fate, and that he can't do anything to change Billy. Billy is the chosen champion, and there is nothing that the wizard can do to change that fact. But Superman can. Superman can be out there with Billy and help him.

I like that later they get more magical with Shazam/Marvel. Sensing magic, lighting blasts, even spells sometimes. That helps to level the playing field

I've seen that ending/those last couple pages reblogged all over the place, and it made me want to track down the book. I'm so glad this book finally got covered. This is a great example of Superman written right. You guys should cover the Alex Ross series of books sometime (Peace on Earth, Power of Hope, etc.)

Remember it was going to be captain thunder but there was already character by that name so they couldn’t use that name( and that character is pretty almost disappeared) and what makes it more confusing is they use the name in flashpoint.

I guess I can see how Dr. Sivana may resemble a racist stereotype, but given how the golden age Captain Marvel comics were pretty blunt when it came to racist caricatures, and Dr Sivana was never colored yellow... I'm gonna say Sivana is just some caucasian mad scientist.

In some interpretations of Captain Marvel (BECAUSE THAT IS HIS NAME) he trades places with Billy Batson so when he is the superhero he speaks of Billy in the third person. That was how Jeff Smith did it in Monster Society of Evil. Then in other interpretations it's just that Billy is imbued with power and his body grows and buffs up, 2000s He-Man style.

Superman: On Krypton, I played a version of hide and seek with doppelgangers. To make it more interesting, you can trap your opponent in a cellophane replica of your family glyph. Shazam: Wow! We usually just hide in dumpsters and throw trash at each other. Superman: I don't know what that means...

Shazam didn't shoot a beam out of his lightning bolt. the creature fired a beam at him and he jumped in front of Superman to take the blast(since its magic and would hurt him).

He was basically always a grown-up Billy with superpowers, including the wisdom of Solomon, but at the same time Cap often referred to Billy like they were entirely separate people. It kind of walked a line.

A story like this is probably why DC editorial has almost banned Shazam for all these years,even when creators do have stories for him(Geoff Johns no less),sweet,lighthearted stories making fun of the silliness of superheroes with just enough sharpness and pathos so it works as an homage to the genre while not taking Billy lightly,this spirit is almost antithetical to New52 ethos of "I'll show you how serious this is with more sex and violence than you can handle",really hope with the movie he's used more often and have new series,as a concept and part of DC he works perfectly as it is,he just needs chances. As an aside had to mention,the art is spectacular,as Sal remarked the wizard's face when he was talking about guidance to Supes said more than pages of dialogue would,really really great
