Superman has long had a stable cast of side characters over at DC Comics, particularly at his work over at the Daily Planet. While many can easily identify the appeal of Lois Lane slightly more perplexing is the enduring love of Jimmy Olsen. We take a look at the series that spawned Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen, Adventures Of Superman, to try to see just what was it about Jack Larson's portrayal that catapulted this already staple character further into the spotlight. Will you end up on the Jimmy bandwagon? Find out here on Casually Comics!

@@ProjektTaku Canceled major network TV shows (like the original Star Trek series) and new TV shows which were produced independently from the major TV networks (just ABC, CBS, and NBC at the time) were licensed for broadcast to local TV stations by the production companies which owned the rights to those shows. It was like Netflix or Hulu buying the rights to Seinfeld or Friends, but each local TV station negotiated the deal. The thing with Jimmy Olsen is that he was defined in his book as an average guy viewpoint character to the wildest Silver Age superheroing. Once Superman comics got rid of a most of that, they struggled with giving him stuff to do, so he ends ups being just kinda there, either as just a superficial comic relief, or trying to "fix him" by making a dignified, unironic badass. To me, the character at his core, as seen in All-Star Superman, the 2011 one-shot and Matt Fraction's book, is that he's both the biggest dork AND the coolest dude on the planet.

What I remember most about Jack Larson (played young Mr. Olsen) is that when Supes got new powers in the comix, lost his cape, and traveled through wires/cables as electricity. A reporter asked Jack Larson what he thought and Mr. Larson just wanted to know how Superman could hear Jimmy call for help if he doesn't fly around on patrol? Lol Btw It really bugged me in Smallville that they had 2 Jimmy Olsens*...both photographers...in the same family! It made no sense whatsoever! *the older one was Chloe's boyfriend.

As a little kid in the early '70s, Jimmy Olsen was my favorite of the Superman titles. Was a big Supes fan back then. As young as I was, I was still able to differentiate quality when I see it. Personally I think this would be a great way to segue into a series ON the Legion, especially since no one is really doing much Legion content (okay no one is doing ANY legion content for some reason) and some of their silver age stories were...well...even for a futuristic team there were a lot of things that seemed to not have changed much in 1000 years.

The most memorable Jimmy moment ever for me was in artists respond vol 2, a collection of pieces done by comic creators in the wake of 9/11, to raise money for all the various charities. There's a page of art by Phil Noto. No words. It's just Jimmy. Holding his camera. Whilst looking upwards. The expression on his face. It's the expression of an everyman. Because it's one we all must have had on that. I just dug it out to refresh my memory, and managed to get something stuck in my eyes that made water come out of it while looking, so it still packs a punch.

One of the few episodes I remember involved playing with an audio tape recorder, a big old fashioned kind with loose reels because they hadn't worked out a standard cassette yet. The guy was collecting sounds, which he kept as little tape splices. I forget why, but he was being kidnapped, and had time to leave a clue on the recorder as to where he was being taken. The gang were puzzled by the sounds of Hello hello hello, Hello hello hello, BOOM. It was Jimmy who suggested Echo Canon, and Echo Canyon was the bad guys' hideout. It's probably been two decades since I watched the show and I still remember that.

There was a Superman/Gen13 crossover, and the Jimmy scene is a riot. I'd recommend it!

Great video as usual! Although I had to hit pause around the 07:40 point, because it’s getting into spoiler territory for me-because I’m actually in the process of re-watching the old “Adventures of Superman” on DVD-and the episode you are describing is one I either don’t remember or may never have seen. So I’m pausing your video until I can watch it and then I will be back!! I promise! Also, it’s cool to find out that the name “Jimmy Olsen” originated on the old radio serials, which I have also been listening to in the old truck while driving. Loving it! 👍

I love me some Silver Age Jimmy Olsen stories, but don't forget Lana Lang, she was in some wacky stories of her own over the years herself!

Jimmy is SUCH an enduring character that he made it into CW's Supergirl series. Strange because although he DID interact with Kara over the decades he WAS primarily a SuperMAN character.

James Jebidiah Olson. I like the way that rolls off of the tung.

"Vampirina" tells the story of a young vampire girl who faces the joys and trials of being the new kid in town when her family moves from Transylvania to Pennsylvania.

I'm disappointed that the phrase "Superman breathes chloroform into a pipe" does not reference him spontaneously developing a superpower (as he is won't to do) by which he BREATHES CHLOROFORM LIKE A DRAGON BREATHES FIRE.
