'Superman: The Movie' - One of the BEST Super Hero Movies of All Time. (RETROSPECTIVE)

Today, super heroes are every where, they're everything! We're inundated with super heroes, whether it's video games, movies, television, it's every where. But it wasn't always like this. Today, we're flashing back to 1978, the very same year both Star Wars and Halloween made their big debuts. Joining them on the big screen would be the Man Of Steel, the Last Son of Krypton... Superman. Starring Christopher Reeve, Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Margot Kidder and more, 'Superman: The Movie' took the world by storm. With a production budget which dwarfed every other film ever made and a box office gross that set it top the heap for the entire year, the movie found its home. They said "You'll believe a man can fly." And, wow, maybe they were right.

My uncle would show me the Christopher Reeve movies repeatedly when I was a kid. He always used to repeat the story about when he saw it in theaters, and everyone erupted into applause when Superman flew across the screen, noting that previously, all anyone had seen was the cheesy moving background effect. “You will believe a man can fly” was all that appeared in the previews he’d seen, and for a moment, people did. That first time he flies in the first movie now gives me goosebumps every time I see it, and it takes me right back to my grandparents’ living room floor, listening to my uncle’s story for the umpteenth time and enjoying it just as much as the first as we watch Superman take flight for the first time, for the 30th time.

The thing that I find so interesting is seeing Chris reeve be so candid about his thoughts on marlon Brando. Most actors at least of a certain generation consider him almost god-like. His honest assessment though critical but not insulting was nice. Also the physical acting difference between Superman and Clark Kent is brilliant.

Still the best Superman. His acting showed how people could be fooled thinking Clark and Superman were different people. He was that good.

Ian, your retrospectives continue to blow me away everytime and you continue to prove why you’re the absolute best when it comes to retrospectives. Thank you for teaching me all these amazing facts on this movie, and now I want to see it so badly. Here’s hoping I do soon. Thank you, Ian, I love you, and I hope to see you again soon.😊❤️

I know people are so divided on Man Of Steel, but one scene in particular that made me feel the same levels of pure joy and excitement as Superman the Movie was when he flies for the first time. Superman the Movie left you in awe. Man of Steel made you excited and full of adrenaline. Both scenes are different but left the same impression on me. Pretty amazing when something can give you the same feelings you experienced as when you were 5 years old

I was nine when my Dad took my brothers and I to see it the day after Christmas in 1978. This may be hard to believe, but it shook me much more than Star Wars a year earlier. Nostalgia aside, as dated as this film can be, Reeve's performance, Williams's score, and Donner's reverence for the character make this the best. Raimi's Spider-Man comes very close, and that's saying a lot. It has a lot of good will and heart.

Henry Cavil is a good Superman, but Christopher Reeves will always has been and always will be the one true Superman. He brought the iconic superhero come to life. From his character to his mannerisms and even the costume itself looks even more amazing in real life. Looking at this super retrospective, just makes me want to re watch the classic Superman movies now. Thanks for showing this history of this iconic movie.

This is one of my all time favorite movies. I remember bugging my dad asking if he’d take me to see it. I was 8 years old. Dad took me twice. I love how it made me feel as a kid and when I got older, I appreciated it so much more. Christopher Reeve was the perfect actor for this role. I do think it’s possible for a new Superman movie to come out with the actor matching(or close)the charisma of Reeve but will never beat Reeve in that department, IMO. In these movies, I appreciate Superman’s pure love for humanity.

I like how Christopher Reeves portrays the character in the sense that he chooses to save a cat out of a tree when everything is calm and under control, and not during a Kryptonian takeover on earth like people wanted to see in Man of Steel apparently. I think by this comment you know my opinion of the ridiculous backlash Man of Steel has faced for years but interesting to see you break it down in full hopefully because I think you'll find a balance between the positives and what people perceive as negatives. Looking forward to the serious hopefully continuing.

Superman the Movie changed EVERYTHING. Hollywood was never the same afterwards. A lot of people think JAWS or Star Wars was what did it but Superman the Movie was so much more important. It was part Sci-fi, part romance, part old school Americana. It was like catching lightning in a bottle. EVERYONE was seeing this movie and EVERYONE wanted more. THAT John Williams soundtrack! THAT Christopher Reeve performance! Sure, its a bit hokey in places but it was also the most positive and upbeat movie to come out of the dark, depressing 1970's. Afterwards, Hollywood restructured itself to make escapist entertainment which is why so many 80's movies were so damn great! You think Indiana Jones, Batman or Back to the Future would have happened without Superman? Not a chance! Superman proved that big budget, special effects crowd pleasers were the future. If you want the full effect, go back and watch some 70's movies like The Godfather and Taxi Driver before you watch S:TM. It's almost like watching the sun come up after a dark and stormy night...

I've heard that Superman didn't travel back in time by reversing Earth's rotation. What happened is that Supes flew fast enough to send himself back in time. Which is something The Flash has pulled countless times. Superman's Earth-spinning shenanigans are a long-held misconception but understandable since it's not apparent what he was doing. Sorry to say, I don't have a source I can quote, I just recall hearing it a while ago, but I can't friggin' remember. It was probably a WhatCulture Video.

Really enjoyed your video. Agree with everything you said about what makes Superman a great character, and it led me to ask, did you ever watch the 1988-1992 live-action Superboy TV series? The Salkinds produced it, same team that made Reeve fly worked on it. It lasted 4 seasons, the suit is almost identical. Unfortunately the first season kinda sucks. There are good episodes there but a lot of bad ones. Season 2 improves with the introduction of Bizarro and Metallo. Season 3 and 4 are amazing. It was the first DC live-action..well anything, to have a multiverse, They visit 4 alternate earths, one of which is very Red Son. Which is kinda awesome considering it came out in 1991, almost a decade before Red Son was written. It's a shame most people aren't aware it even exists. If you can get past the cheese that comes with late 80s early 90s tv, you'll enjoy it. It got better and better each season, and was doing well in the ratings. But then Warner Bros decided they wanted to do Lois and Clark instead, and Superboy ended, and was forgotten. Like i said, it's a shame. Because despite some bad stuff, it kept going and striving for better and better stories and production values. Whereas i feel seasons 3 and 4 of Lois and Clark were just a decline. That got canceled because it got bad. Superboy was canceled after 4 seasons while it was in its prime.
