Hans Zimmer will truly go down in history as one of the greatest musical pioneers of our generation. His score for Christopher Nolan's 2017 war film Dunkirk is a remarkable blend of traditional orchestral elements that are typical for World War II movies with unusual electronic tones. It gives the film a modern twist and conveys an incredible sense of urgency that conventional orchestras can't achieve on their own.
The Gothik Serpent version of Supermarine, arguably the best tune on the soundtrack, is by far the single most difficult work of music I've done from a production standpoint. Rather than having distinct sections like the kinds of songs I'm used to, Supermarine largely revolves around a simple pattern that repeats itself throughout, with various instruments ebbing and flowing with varying intensity. Getting a feel for this was not easy at all, and just plotting out all the parts from scratch took over a month to do.
Of course, I elected to rockify this tune with lots of guitars and guitar-induced noises, however it was critical to not step on the fundamental rhythm by, for instance, having a conventional drum beat laid over it. The result is what I hope is a more intense, harder hitting Supermarine that fans of the movie and Hans Zimmer can appreciate.
