The MO crew took the four fastest naked sportbikes representing what we like to call the "Supernaked" class on a journey over the mountains and through the deserts to a house called Chuckwalla Valley Raceway. Once there we proceeded to twist these wonderful machines into all sorts of interesting shapes as we sorted them into a comprehensive finishing order to find the best bike of the bunch.
The contenders tested here are the Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 RR vs. BMW S1000R vs. KTM 1290 Super Duke R vs. Yamaha FZ-10.

Great review. I like the way all opinions are discussed and it’s not a pure ranking competition. The reality is, with these bikes, they’re all the nuts.

I grew up here in New Zealand riding Honda's (who still make great bikes) but in 2015 I brought an Aprilia Tuono 1100RR, which was a great bike with great build quality and outstanding performance for a naked and the sound it made with the standard pipe was intoxicating, fast forward to today and I have taken delivery of the latest Tuono RR and man I thought this bike couldn't get any better, but the auto blipper downshifter, bigger brakes and the TFT dash is in another world, everything that I wanted in the last one is on the new one. I have fitted an Akrapovic pipe with the Aprilia race map and boy this thing hauls and sounds outstanding. I'm really happy with this bike well done Aprilia!

@jack black I dunno man, they always come with a winner all this time except this one. every streetfighter/supernaked shootout always have a winner all this time, so when they only pick 4 out of 9 bikes in this class (no z1000, gsx-s1000, brutale and monster, or EBR) and says "there's no losers here" I think they really pick the best player on this class right now. and these 4 bikes actually compete really close on each other. all the reviewers actually clearly shows their personal preference in the end of the video, so what they mean with "no losers" is maybe all the bikes in this video is just that equally good/compete with a really close gap. maybe I'm too naive :)

jack black I don't think so. I've rode all 4 of these when deciding what to get after selling my 2015 Yamaha R1M and LOVED them all,..in the end I got a new FZ10 for $9,200 out the door froma. Dealer in California that ordered too many in grey/fleur so I went FZ10 but all 4 are Sooooo close in performance there really was no looser, I LOve the Aprilia but lack of dealer support and reliability questions turned me to the much less expensive Yamaha . And yes less hp than the others but it's quicker 0-60mph than all of these so depends on where u want the power. Also, not sure where they got their #,..maybe a dud becuse the crank hp is 160 where the Tuono and ktm are 175,..that's 15hp difference , the BMW is 160 as well. Butntheri saying 25 hp difference???? Mine dynod at 148 whp stock ,..only 12 off the Tuono. Trulynthink they got a dud. 15 crank hp doesn't equate to 25 whp. It's backwards.

Love the main presenter guy’s coolness and realistic real works enthusiasm. Very thorough review - like how you measure the bikes yourselves and cut through manufacturer bs like many UK and European journos don’t, as they’re hypnotised on press launches and seem to be all hoping for future PR jobs with bike manufacturers for better money than they get for papers and magazines. Really feel I will pull the trigger on a Tuono now even though there’s hardly any dealers in the uk.

FZ10Rider hey fz10rider! 👍👍 agreed ! I almost went Tuono Factory but over $20,000 out the door!!!! Poor reliability record and no dealer within 1200 miles of me so I went FZ10 and found one a week after launch in California for $9,200 OUT THE DOOR! $3,700 under MSRP. Cali dealer ordered 12 of them for launch , 9 in grey /fleur and hadn't sold one in the first week so they put 2 of the grey on cycletrader at cost ($9,200) to keep dealer allocation up, I found it on cycle trader and had money transferred the next day site unseen. Owned 2 years and loved the hell out of it!

ABNER ONER id loooove an update also to know how reliability has been and if he lives near a dealer. I went FZ10 becuse no dealers within 1200 miles of me and the reliability of the Tuono is about as bad as they come with expensive topnend costs for parts and service when it does go bad. A Tuono Factory is $20,000 out the door new ,..got my FZ10 new for $9,200 out the door at launch, half the price of a Tuono Factory . I like the looks of the Tuono Factory better and Ohlins , Brembo etc but not double the price better.

Here's the thing tho to take into consideration, I always wish that in these comparisons they would take into consideration reliability. I LOVE THE TUONO, BUT I live in utah USA and there's NO Aprilia dealers writhing 1,200 miles SO dealer service isn't an option and for a bike that has horrible reliability reputation has to be something to consider. If the Tuono was a very reliable bike like the Yamaha , I'd buy a Tuono and spend a bit more but when there's serious known issues with gearboxes grenading , valve jobs that are very expensive and need to be done much more regularly than anything else. The parts and service are all very expensive relatively speaking, at the top end of costs . In this compassion there's no mention of reliability or dealer support which plays a HUGE part! Also interesting to note that while they kept saying the MT10 is down on power and hownits noticeable at the track, it's the quickest 0-60mph of any of these , even the torque monster 1300 cc superduke R. So top end back straight power down a hair but quicker out of the hole and to 60mph. Also a good thing to note, I got my FZ10 new on 2017 at the launch and I paid $9,200 OUT THE DOOR! Not $12,999! A lot of dealers ordered too many and had to dump some at cost to keep dealer allocation up. I didn't have $1,400 of dealer fees the other bikes have and have the best and longest warranty with thenlargest dealer network, lowest parts and service cost and the most reliable manufacturer in the world with the FZ10. SO i went FZ10 , had it 2 years with not one issue, only sold becaue of divorce and I'm buying another one I loved it so much. As they stated also, the power is neutered by the cat and regs . I dropped the 25lb cat which is a huge weight drop , did a $130 cat delete y pipe , race air filter for that huge air box and sent the ECU to NelsTune to be flashed to my mods, came back with 178.5 hp at the crank more than the Tuono and superduke , and cost less than $600 for all of it. All in all I had a FZ10 with more horsepower than any of these for less than $10,000 ,..I can't justify spending another $9,000 for s superduke or $6,000 for a Tuono rr . If they'd said u can find the FZ10 for $9,000 new out the door , they'd of all determined the FZ10 as winner but at 13k and with the power restricting cat on I get it to a point but certainly can't say the Tuono is the winner when you can't count on it reliability wise and when something goes sideways your talking about $2,000 minimum and NO dealers around. Just my 2 cents. Again not a Yamaha fanboy, I LOVE Aprilias but the fact is they have a horrible track record for reliability , their very very expensive to repair parts and labor , and there's no dealer network unless you live in Italy. That's a problem.
@spenkystar
@spenkystar 4 года назад
In a test like this taking reliability in consideration is pretty hard for them. This is because these guys often test these bikes right after launch or ride the bikes just a couple of days. If you really want to know more about reliabillity it might be a better choice to watch some long therm reviews. I think you made a good choice with your Yamaha!

Great review as always, thanks for this! But a couple of suggestions: let's not talk about horsepower so much, it means something but at the same time not so much. There are times when a bike with half the horsepower can be twice the fun, depending on the type of riding. Instead of spec sheet information, what is really useful in a video would be things like: - How easy / comfortable is it to lane-split each bike through say, an hour of LA traffic? At the end of doing that, which bike would you pick to go to work every day for the next year or two? - Which one feels more relaxed (or frenzied) at everyday speeds? - How accessible is each bike across a range of rider heights? (put the shortest tester on each bike, doing emergency stops on an off-ramp with a lot of road camber / road crown) - Speak to maintenance. Which one needs valve checks often, which has the best dealer network, which is most DIY-friendly etc. - Which one feels more *fun* in daily riding? (not necessarily the same as which one is fastest) But again, thanks for this great content, I really am nitpicking on free content, that's not the intention, just a few suggestions that's all.

just more torque not more horsepower, measure it at the wheel and the aprilia has 4-5 more hp, its just the fastest bike in class followed by the bmw. And let me know when KTM figures out how to adjust the electronics on the fly, last time I checked you had to stop, really, im not kidding. Meanwhile i can adjust TC at any time instantly and just have to pull the clutch for engine maps. One hell of a bike the Ktm just not as good as the Aprilia

go to KTM's and aprilias website, the aprilia measures in at 175.something horsepower, and the duke comes in at 177.something horsepower. The duke also has about 1300cc's at its disposal, compared with the aprilias 1100. And it has more torque.

Aimé Yann Tuono ‘17 Factory owner here as well. This bike is not really for city use. It likes to go fast, and go through the gears dynamically. There have been map refreshes and I’d say it’s quite nimble already with proper fueling and stable at slow speed ride. But You’ll feel as if You were driving a Viper and tiptoeing on the gas. Man, this thing wants to go as fu@%! It turns You into a hooligan. So if You’re a type of guy, who can resist the temptation and be OK with the less satisfying sound under 5K rpm, then this bike is for You. But as someone, who used to own a CB1000r and switched to a Tuono Factory I can tell You, it’s like switching between a pony and a stallion. You want to rip every time!!! 😂😂

These types of reviews are great, not focused only on specs. The overall riding experience is what most buyers are looking for. Sometimes you don't have the opportunity (depending on your location) to ride all the bikes under the same condition, or even to ride them at all. For me the nearest Aprillia dealer is 400 miles away, so thinking ahead, the availability of spare parts and service is a decision factor . In that realm Yamaha, BMW, KTM are ranked in that order of service availability. You want to keep the 2/3 year guarantee on these bikes no matter what. More HP more electronics to control them, more electronics more expensive to fix. By looks 1. Aprillia 2.BMW 3.FZ10 4 KTM (I'm not a fan of the headlight). Price, up front sticker price can scare away potential buyers, but don't let that stop you, there might be the right deal waiting for you. For me BMW S1000r is the bike I'll be buying soon. I'm a beginner rider - 15,000 miles on a FZ07. 80% City - high traffic 19% Roads 1%Track ++++I would say any of these bikes are for city/ high traffic/ filtering riding, they'll get too hot.+++++ this is my opinion.

I think the Aprilia Tuono more or less have won every shootout since the first V2 in 2006. They really take the experience from the racetrack to streetbikes, and they look quality when you see them upfront close.

I just sold my 2017 Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 factory after only 10 months. The bike is fast, good looking, sounds like a MotoGP bike, awesome brakes, good suspension and dives into corners like a champ. However, it will roast you in the summer with HEAT and the riding position is weird, a bit aggressive but still more comfortable than superbikes. Basically, it's a superbike with handlebars, not really a true naked bike. This bike is great for riders who ride track and street, if you don't ride track like me than you are doing yourself a disservice by getting this bike. Also, Aprilia does not like to pay for warranty work and they said if you put an aftermarket exhaust on the bike your warranty is voided because it's no longer street legal and they said Aprilia does not warranty track bikes.

I loved the Super Duke but I wanted long trip wind protection, baggage, and a bit better passenger accommodations. That was before the GT came out so I got a Multistrada. I wasn't disappointed. You could butcher a Super Duke into being something it wasn't meant to be, but really, buy it knowing you're buying an engine with wheels and that you're going to be happy spending $18k to bomb around local roads and you won't be disappointed.

Love riding just like the next guy but at 20K or even 15K its just too much $ for a bike. At 12K list price and if you waited for dealers end of the year sales for 11K-10K it’s got to be the Yamaha MT10. Plus the bike responds really well to re mapping and exhaust 150hp

Birky 41 agree a local dealer was trying hard to give his brand new 2016 GSXS 1000 away for 2K under MSRP...loved the look of it and could have modified it with every upgrade available for under 12K. I’m waiting for the all black 2018 review and then I’ll make my decision.

The one thing that puts the Suzuki infront of the FZ10/MT10 is that it allows for much higher leanangles. But Suzuki deliberately made the throttle response very aggressive wich made it hard for me to ride smooth and "round" like i always do. Im no streetracer so i much prefered the throtthe response of the MT10. But then again i only took the 2 out for a short testride.
@robertpowers9063

xXxTripleHxXx ther are literally dozens of videos on u tube of guys re-flash/mapping and adding aftermarket pipe with dyno runs. This smooths/corrects those problems you described jerky(off/on) throttle response. FYI the 2018 was supposed to address this, waiting patiently for a review!

Super Duke R💪
@aluisious
@aluisious 6 лет назад
Great review (and great job you guys have). The Super Duke definitely wins in the looks department. The fuel economy results are kind of staggering, 31 mpg for the bike with the smallest engine and least power is pitiful. I have to admit I've hated Yamahas since I babysat a 2002 FZ1 through all it's stupid problems and Yamaha doesn't fail to keep giving me reasons. I don't know what it is about big twins but they seem to have legs these days, my Multistrada gets MPG numbers that seem like I must be doing the calculation wrong. I've had 51 MPG doing 75 mph all day through Nevada and Utah, and it "drops" to 41 if I ride it as hard as I dare up gnarly mountains at home. 51! That's a number that would be a marketing bullet point for a Honda 500cc twin.

J Hawk I'd agree - I love my Tuono V4, but the Yamaha is a great, great road bike. The best way I've heard the Tuono described is as medicine for sports bike owners who want a naked. It's less comfortable / practical - but in return you not stepping too far away from superbike expectations.

I dont know why you spend so much time talking about the mt-10 HP deficit which is purely a fuel mapping issue, and then gloss over the fact that the issue is totally resolved with a flash, as if people looking in this class won't pursue an aftermarket exhaust or fuel remap to begin with.

Glossed over it? Burns said as much when he was downplaying the HP difference.
