The fact that Jack is willing to die for them proves he's family. Dean has truly become John, obsessed with revenge over the being that ruined his life and willing to sacrifice themselves and anyone else for it. As a child, Dean coped with his trauma by becoming his abuser, something he never should have had to do and something he never fully let go of. His entire relationship with Jack sees the cycle repeat, with Jack consciously imitating Dean and trying to spend time with him. He wants Dean's love and acceptance like Dean did John's and was willing to die to get it, believing its the only way he'll be forgiven for accidentally killing Mary. For him to make that choice, and then to hear Dean flat-out say Jack isn't family, that must have been shattering. Jack is three years old, made into a living weapon, pushed along by a man who doesn't care for him the way the child so desperately wants and needs. And yet Jack, too deep in now and too afraid of failure and further rejection, still follows the plan. Dean wanted Jack only as a means to create a better life for himself, just like Lucifer did. Screw that, screw him.

I loved when he said "Son of a bitch!" after he saw the Men of Letters file on Mrs. Butters, the Wood Nymph. Totally Dean. It especially reminded of Dean when he was reverted to his younger self by adult Hansel in Season 10, Episode 12 , titled "About a Boy." He was magically reduced to his juvenile age by Hansel using magic so he and that Witch could dine on American children, without abducting children. As soon as Dean looked at his reflection and saw himself as a kid, he said "Sunava Bitch," in his iconic tone; except it was a tween Dean saying it, not an adult Dean.

In a way, AW Michael was right. He was family, but he was right when he told Jack that he wasn't as important to Dean as Sam and Cass were and are. Remember, though, Cass isn't Sam, either. The only person/family member whom Dean might love more than Sam, would be Mary.

Dean treated Jack horribly. His “love” for Jack was completely conditional. In the beginning, he literally said, “I hate you, I’m gonna kill you.” Until Jack brought Cas back, then he liked Jack. But only so long as he could supernaturally benefit from Jack, like his power, or bringing back loved ones like Cas & his Mom from purgatory world. And it showed with how he was willing to use Jack without any care, until he finally admitted that Jack wasn’t family. Well, screw that & screw you. Jack is meant for & deserves more.

This shouldn't be surprising for Sam or the audience. Dean's relationship with Jack has always been toxic. He's still never really said sorry for the first time around when he threatened to kill Jack. He's never recognized how f*cked up the Malak box situation was. Dean has called Jack family before, but let's be honest, aside from Sam, Dean only considers people family when it's convenient for him.

None of this is true by that I mean, it’s never been toxic all that happened yes but he did consider him family and it wasn’t just because it was convenient for him. Not to mention the two have literally made questionable decisions of their own and they essentially raised Jack
@GeekyNerdTheatre
@GeekyNerdTheatre 3 года назад
@Sons of Gaming Dean in season 13: threatened to kill Jack not because Jack had actually done anything wrong, but because Dean blamed him for killing Cas. I'm not saying Dean doesn't have a right to feel angry, but threatening murder on a week old child? Seriously? Dean in season 14: Planned to kill Jack not for the greater good, but because he killed Mary. Again, I'm not saying Dean shouldn't be allowed to feel angry about this, but he also never takes into acount Sam or Castiel's feelings either. Dean in season 15: Is totally cool with Jack killing himself if it means that he and Sam get "freedom" from Chuck. If that's not a toxic relationship, I don't know what is. Sure, in between all of that Dean takes Jack on driving trips and bakes him cakes. But as soon as he makes a mistake or Dean can sacrifice him for his own needs, he's quick to change his tune. That's what I mean when I say that Dean only cares when it's convenient for him. Dean's love is conditional, and in my opinion that doesn't make Jack a part Dean's family. Family = unconditional love and support. Dean's love for Jack is not unconditional and it never has been.
@MistressFearless
@MistressFearless 3 года назад
@@GeekyNerdTheatre I agree with you but I'm going to point out that I can't think of a single relationship that Dean has that hasn't become toxic by this point, especially with Sam, Cas, and Jack.
@GeekyNerdTheatre
@GeekyNerdTheatre 3 года назад
@@MistressFearless 100% agreed. I focused on Jack because that's primarily who this scene is about, but the way Dean lumps himself together with Sam here is equally as frustrating. Even if Dean doesn't identify Jack as family, that doesn't give him the right to tell Sam how he should feel on the matter. Dean keeps saying "We" as if he and Sam are the same person. The amount of times he has said, "I get that you care about him," and then immediately dismisses Sam's feelings is infuriating. It's almost like he views Sam as property. I don't even think I have the stomach to talk about all of the crap Dean did to Cas at the beginning of this season.
@MistressFearless
@MistressFearless 3 года назад
@@GeekyNerdTheatre That's fair and completely true. Like you said, it shouldn't be a surprise for anyone that Dean is behaving this way. Although, I'm pretty sure it's also because Dean's toxic and abusive behavior is more blatant now than before. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of this is also because Cas and Sam like Jack even though Dean doesn't. That being said, I'm pretty sure that Dean does view Sam as property instead of a brother or a person with his own feelings. You can tell from how he constantly reminds people that Sam is his brother and his responsibility which he thinks gives him the right to make any and all decisions for him and then gets upset when that's not how that works or when Sam doesn't fall in line. Dean is a possessive spoiled brat after all. Can't blame you for not wanting to touch Dean's appalling behavior toward Cas, especially beginning of this season. Hopefully after this, the writers will leave Dean bitter, miserable, and alone like he deserves. But I'm not holding out much hope.

I get that Chuck manipulated his train of thought but still. The writer went to talk to the writers of Game of Thrones and basically asked them how they turned 7 seasons of greatness for Dany into a trash character for the final season and applied it to Dean. That has to be it because Chuck's manipulations aren't 100% convincing me to be partially on Dean's side at all and he's my guy... that's saying something.

Let's be very clear on this: What Dean is doing here, and in many other instances, is ABUSE. Plain and simple. Dean only sees people as family for as long as they are useful and don't make mistakes/do something that he doesn't like. Dean's love is highly conditional. He will expect everyone to understand his hurt and his lashing out and his mistakes, but as soon as anyone else makes a mistake, he will hold that over them for the rest of his life. That is true for Jack, for Cas, and even for Sam, though at least their relationship has grown a tad healthier in the most rect seasons. Dean is treating Jack in exactly the same way that John treated them, in fact it's a combination of the abuse Dean and Sam suffered. Like Dean, Jack gets saddled with an immeasurable amount of responsibility from a very early age and is severely punished for any mistake. The punishment doesn't come in the form of physical beatings like Dean had, but by withholding love and only giving it when he is behaving the correct way (also a thing that John did). This is why Dean baking Jack a birthday cake and only a few episodes later calling him "not family" is, sadly, completely in character. Similar to Sam, Jack is alienated, seen as less than human, and treated as a ticking time bomb, a monster. He carries a huge burden, but Dean doesn't trust him to do it. Jack is only useful as a tool, and will be thrown under the bus as necessary. Dean is an abuser. He does not come from a place of malice, he comes from a place of hurt and trauma. But he is STILL an abuser, and his trauma doesn't excuse that in any way. It explains everything, but it's no excuse. Sam has grown from his trauma, Dean hasn't. Sam loves people unconditionally, even when they make mistakes, Dean can't. Sam believes in others and builds them up, because he knows what it feels like to be treated as useless, and as a monster. He knows how crippling it is to have the closest people in your life not believe in you. His trauma helps him empathize. Dean's trauma makes him lash out and hurt others. Sam broke the cycle, Dean is stuck in it. The one thing I wished for Dean as a character, because I still love him so much, was for him to finally be able to grow past his crippling childhood trauma. Grow past his codependency with Sam and past his abusive tendencies. But the show does the opposite. It constantly excuses Dean's actions and paints other characters, notably Sam, but also Cas, in a bad light for rightfully being pissed at him. Dean only very rarely apologizes to anyone, and even those apologies will be walked back on as needed for dramstic effect. Dean is affirmed in his behavior, and thus sinks deeper into it. The finale, if anything, took us right back to the start in the worst possible way, and Dean's trauma is never adressed and death is seen as the only way of breaking the cycle of suffering. That is a horrific message to send and I will never forgive the show for it.

I’m sorry, I don’t usually do this, but this made me really mad. You’re right, ok? Dean didnt treat Jack right. He was out of line and that’s it. But he’s not abusive. He has been raised by John Winchester. That dick taught him that what’s bad needs to die. No questions asked. So yeah, when he first met Jack, the son of Lucifer, he didn’t trust him. Then he saw who Jack really was and he loved him like family, like his own son. Dean didn’t stop considering Jack family because he wasn’t useful anymore or because he made a mistake. Jack killed his mom. That’s hard to forgive and forget. His mom was his hero and he just got her back after 33 years of being basically an orphan. (John wasn’t a father, I’m sorry). And yeah, that’s something Dean didn’t like, but news flash, no one who has that kind of relationship with their mum, or any person, wouldn’t like that. Even Sam didn’t like that. And yeah, Sam reacted in a different way, but because they are two different people. Sam is more forgiving, Dean is not. He’s hurt and he has the right to be. And let’s be honest, I’m completely aware of the trauma Sam went through with his dad, I am, but Dean got the worst of John. Im sorry, but that’s true. John treated him like shit and Sam left him for god’s sake. He grew up thinking he was worth less than the dirt under his shoes and that’s a pretty big thing. You can’t just shake that off that easily. Especially if you are a person as closed as Dean. Sam made it, because he had his brother’s love. He learned his worth because Dean made him feel worthy. Dean didn’t have that. Yeah, Sam loved Dean, but he left. Not because he wanted to stay away from Dean, but because he wanted freedom. And how do you think a boy who grew up feeling like he wasn’t enough takes his only brother leaving because he wants freedom? Not well. He surely thought He wasn’t enough for Sam to stay. I’m saying this because you say that Sam made it out, loved people unconditionally and used the trauma he went through as a strength. And I agree and I love him for it. But y’all forget Sam had love when he was a child, because Dean loved and loves him more than his own life. Dean didn’t. As Cas said himself, Dean feels thing more than any human being, so when he feels anger or fear, he just lashes out. He doesn’t expect people to understand that, because he doesn’t either, as he said himself when he was apologising to Cas in purgatory. And he doesn’t hold other people’s mistakes over them for the rest of their life. He literally forgave Cas more times that I can remember, and let’s not talk about Sam. And that’s a fact. AND he’s not his dad. He’s just not. he is a better man John could ever been. In 15x14, he still hadn’t forgiven Jack but he told him he was trying, because he cares about him. John wouldn’t have even tried to forgive Dean, or Sam. He never did. Dean has a hard time forgiving people, yes, but he tries. And that’s not only honourable but also amazing and it shows his beautiful heart trying to fight his anger. In 15x17, he says this, not meaning it, because he’s scared and yes, also because he still hasn’t completely forgiven him. He loves Jack, he just does, later he also gets protective over him, but Jack broke his heart in the worst way and in a situation like this, in which he feels like a fucking hamster running in a circle, he says stuff he doesn’t wanna say and that’s human. I understand him. I do. And I’m not trying to excuse him for what he said, because he’s wrong, but he is not abusive

tbh this just seemed like deans way of feeling less guilt/grief over losing jack (again). because he originally thought of jacks first death as "losing a kid" so i think he just wanted a reason not to feel that pain again. but also there was that time when jack said "well if dean dies, he dies!" so theyre kinda even there

Chuck was trying to make them kill each other at this point. He had been trying to get them to kill each other all season, so he created a reason that Dean would get desperate enough to do just about anything, except kill the one person he spent his entire life taking care of. After so many years has he not learned anything? Why is it that any character development Dean has had always gets back pedaled every season. He keeps learning and unlearning. He wanted to kill Jack, then he didn't anymore, then Jack was killed anyway by God and Dean was sad, then Jack was brought back and Dean seem to be happy about that. Then Jack got his soul back, which should have been a really great happy thing, but nope. No one really cared or comforted. And now Dean wants to kill Jack again while killing God, but that failed and now Jack seems to be dying and Dean will be sad again and pretend like he will care about that. As if he didn't want to kill him just a minute before. Like wtf is going on. Jack sacrificed his soul to save them, then he gets blamed for doing bad shit while not having a soul, which he lost for them in the first place. Then he gets his soul back and plans to sacrifice himself again to kill God. But eh, he's not family. The kid has done everything for them. Everything. The same as Cas has over the years. He sacrificed so much of himself, only to be thrown a bone here and there and only to have his importance to Dean acknowledged when dying or dead. To be taken back right away when he showed up alive again. It's borderline abusive. Grow a damn pair and for once, communicate and sort out your feelings instead of the anger all the time, and lashing out all the time. At some point its not because you have gone through a lot and are damaged anymore, but just because you're a shitty person.

Dean doesn't feel anger towards Jack!in 15x01 Dean told"he was our kid" and that wasn't even to Jack or Sam or Cas so anyone can call it pretending!it was a freaking demon who was wearing Jack's face!that was Dean's best time to lash out and say all kinds of craps but instead just said "our kid" and that time Chuck wasn't even around or with ideas of writing and in E14 they had days!I mean literally days while Chuck was busy!and during that holiday both Dean and Jack seemed to be completely forgot about Mary and all the tough stuff and were happy!a person wouldn't be that happy with his mother's murderer!especially Dean!and Chuck even in S14 tried to manipulate him to kill Jack using his fresh anger and grief!and in this episode,it was made clear that Chuck wanted all of this!Becky reacted to his writing in 15x04 and in that episode,after he started writing,both of the brothers were like not themselves and organized! and this episode proves that!

@@Bmhtsos18 technically not, remember? When Cass said that the half demon child Jesse is considered the antichrist? Jack is a half angel.

@@Bmhtsos18 jack was never evil, not even when he was soulless. The kid was desperate to fit in and be loved, he was just 3 years old, one of the most powerful creatures to ever exist, only of his kind, and little life experience. I get that it was their mom(who by the way would chose a lot over them in a blink lol) but the kid didn't even mean it. He deserved to be forgiven and Dean just became a character I couldn't stand. He used to be my favourite, but he's just self centered-always right-arogant kind of guy. He didn't deeply care about anyone but Sam and treated Cas as if he was his employee or worse, just some kind of disposable thing even after Cas lost pretty much everything for him and sam

This is so disappointing, Dean is just getting worse. He used to be my favourite and now I can't stand him. "he's not like Cas"? He's been treating Cas like a disposable crap for a while even tho Cas sacrificed everything for the two of them. Jack burned his soul for helping them and his just this big bag of shit. I know it was hard losing his mom, but it's not as if the kid murded her on cold blood. For a long time now I believe Dean only really cares for Sam and himself. Doesn't matter the argument people say to defend him. Total jerk. I feel bad for Jack, the kid just wanted to be accepted like in forever

As long as it's him and Sam Dean doesn't give a shit about anyone and sometimes even without Sam

Remember this comment Dean's going to die in the end so everybody can live and Sam can grow old with his lady friend and this is just a quick synopsis with what I think then when Sam dies old age or later in life Dean picks him up on that bridge in the Impala and they drive off and the screen goes to Black that's why you see those final pictures of the series on Instagram of them 2 on the bridge and it looks like they got gray hair! I guess they're going to go to heaven when they drive off but I wish this wasn't going to be the end I just wanted them to live and kill like the occasional monster here and there after defeating Chuck everybody and have a bit of happiness that's the ending I wanted. because if you watch The series for years Heaven is is like a matrix type place of your best memories. so I hope it don't in like I predicted it!?!

That was an accident. That bitch was already dead, and was brought back for no reason other than emotional conflict. I don't hate Mary, but it's just unnecessary

That's because Dean, who was everyone's favourite started becoming very different and he sure wasn't like he was before. And most people started liking Jack as he was a comfort character like Cas. So putting two and two together, yes this scene is hated by people.
