This is one of my favorite episodes of Supernatural. Dean's view is an important one. Demons, vampires, all the rest have to follow rules, they have patterns. It is people who really do the twisted things.
I re-watched this episode recently and I agree with you that its a damn good episode. The Bender family in this episode is based on a real family named Bender from the 1800s that killed visitors to their hotel in Kansas. They have 11 confirmed victims including an 18 month old although their could be more victims as their were a high number of missing persons in the area at that time. Also sorry for this mild spoiler but I don't think we ever see that Cop again, I may be wrong but I don't remember her appearing in other episodes.
I know it isnt used for like 10 more seasons but the time Dean says in the forest ' We arent stuck out here with you. You're stuck out here with us.' Really fits this episode too once Sam is free and they're kicking ass back.
This is one of my favourite episodes. I love the premise of the villain of the week being humans. Also I agree completely - horror stories with humans as monsters scare me more than horror stories with a supernatural monster.
I agree with you on deranged humans being scarier than supernatural entities. I always really liked the cop in this episode as well. It's makes it easier to suspend disbelief in the supernatural elements of the show when you have characters that react like they would in reality. A cop would be suspicious of Dean and run his badge number. A cop might decide to help but would handcuff the person that used a fake badge. It's those "real" moments for me in a tv show or movie that separate the great fantasy/sci-fi shows from the mediocre ones. Great review.
There was a family in 1800s called the Benders that killed people in their bed and breakfast home. The bloody Benders I'm sure this episode was named after.
"Hey Sam, you're alive. That's great." Very relatable when it comes to Supernatural. Also, you're reaction makes me want to rewatch it in English haha Edit: everything you say is just like what my first reactions were
I'm with you on "supernatural" things being less horrifying than people. The only supernatural type thing that freaks me out at all anymore is zombies... And that's just the idea of them not the actual movies/tv shows with them, because I swear some "medical scientists" (I use that term loosely) could very well be like one slip up away from some Dawn of the Dead type stuff going on. But that's just my crazy theory. 😂
Missy is terrifying in this episode. I wonder what would have happened to her after all of this. Her only living parent is now dead and it's not like she could acclimate to "normal society" easy. Just a curiosity I've always had about this episode. On a side note I love your jacket.
I relive this in anxiety dreams still. I had a friend go missing about 20yrs ago and this episode just settled in my brain with that. Gives me the shivers. This also reeks of Deliverance.
@@lollypop2414 This episode was aired in February 2006 and filming for season 1 of Torchwood started in May 2006. Depending on when exactly Countrycide was filmed, it's probably feasible that it was inspired by this, but it would be a bit tight on time and I think it's equally possible that they were just conceived independently of each other.
That's what I was thinking watching this video. Obviously there is a lot more disgusting things in re7 but the atmosphere and the setting in this episode feels about the same as re7
From what little "research" I've done, I don't think this episode had the same writer(s) as Torchwood's _Countrycide_ and yet there are strong similarities, especially the dialogue at 14:13
First thing I did was look at the episodes - they aired the same year. SPN was in February and Torchwood in November. It may have just been synchronicity though, because they film episodes long before they air. But the similarities were unmistakeable.
I wanna get a tshirt with "Demons, I get" in the front and "People are crazy" in the back. Just to see the reactions of people who only read the front. (And I love how accurate it is!)
This is one of my fave episodes from this first season because it is realistically creepy. There are people out there in the world like this that exist and it’s disgusting
This is literally the american version of that insane group in torchwood when they go in the rural village, especially when that guy with the bad teeth literally also says "because it's fun"
A police officer should know "handcuffing a person to the exterior door handle of a post 2000 vehicle is like handcuffing them to a wooden bench" Do you know how many door handles get replaced every year? There's no metal frame under there, even if there was, it's a metal frame that's attached to a hinge. You are literally *inviting* an escape. Dean: "Demons I get... People are crazy." Me: "I feel much the same. At least demons are not 'human' but the things some people choose to put other people through is kind of, well, monstrous."
I literally forgot that how many times Sam was in trouble and Dean was saving him in early seasons! I mean even in season 15 is still always about Sam is in trouble but wow season 1 was just too much 😅
This one is also one of my favorites of this season. Mainly for a lot of the reasons you already mentioned. *LOL* Also, it was a fleeting moment, but the part where Dean chooses Sam to be the next one for them to hunt always got me. And that may sound counter-intuitive, because we KNOW how protective Dean is of Sam. (And vice-versa.) But in that moment, when he had to choose between the cop who, though clearly not helpless still doesn't know all the things they know, or his brother, he chose his brother. Because he knew that of the two of them, Sam had the best chance of getting out of it alive. To me, that demonstrated a high level of trust and I just love it. I loved your reaction. Heck, I love ALL your reactions! And I especially love your insights into the boys. Definitely looking forward to watching your reactions to the rest of this season and onward. :)
Great reaction! This is easily one of the most disturbing episodes ever (and, along with 1x19, Provenance) ranks up top on my "scariest episodes" list. Everything else I can handle. This -- uh, uh. No way. The evil that humankind does ... But I loved your reaction and your thoughts, and your dissection of the episode and characters. If you liked Kathleen (the cop in this episode), just wait until you meet Jody! :)
For me the supernatural things don’t stick because they are an escapism from reality. Nothing to fear because it’s not real. Psycho Humans on the other hand are all too real. So much scarier because humans have proved they are real monsters through out history. This could literally be a report on the news...
This is one of my favourite episodes of the season just because it actually is normal people and it's definitely more terrifying. Similar to my minor obsession with true crime because some people are seriously scary! There's definitely a morbid fascination to it.
The way she looks like she's getting all hot and bothered when Sam kicks ass 😂 there's something about the way he fights and those huffs and puffs he does that just... 😏
I love this episode the first time I saw it. I was so excited to see them face something not supernatural and it reminded me of a story I read called "the greatest game"( I think) and it is really cool
My favorite horror stories are those written by H.P. Lovecraft. There's always something alien and ruthless about the creatures trying to invade our world, horrible enough to drive people mad. This episode is much like an "X-Files" one 4x02 "Home" which is about the inbred Peacock family. This family was much worse though, 3 brothers who have sex with their multiple amputee mother who gives birth to a malformed infant. Yech.
This episode was actually based on a real family which is terrifying! Dean’s line “.demons I get, people are crazy” is one of my favs of the entire show! Personal question, are you from NC? You seem to have that accent. 🤓
not saying this show is bad...far from it...but in the reactionsphere, kinda have to make it full time to keep it going. Why not a lot of reactors take it on.
Honestly, the scariest episodes of Supernatural for me are the ones that deal with real people. And ghosts. I hate ghosts. But the ones that deal with real people are the worst.
My two favourite horror movies are The Cabin In The Woods (if you can even call it horror) and The Strangers, the latter sounds like it would be right up your alley.
Sesska: I'm gonna get what I've been asking for? Me: Yes! I like this episode, is really cool the idea of the "Monster of the week" being just humans. "Monsters, I get it. People is just crazy" I don't get why I find Sam figthing so atractive, I love seeing Sam fight seriousley, more without jacket xD. Eveytime he fights I'm like, Mmm... Sammy 7w7. Most fans andpeopel in general find Dean/Jensen the best looking. But for me Sam/Jared is better xdxd
H9neztly, the cop lady shoukd have given Dean a heads up about psycho girl. If she fell for it, ... well, as we saw, so did he...! Oh well, she does have a concussion, I'll forgive her.😅 I can't figure out the source but now I've got, "again, information that would've been useful *YESTERDAY!*" in my head... seems like something Wallace Shawn would have delivered excellently, but I don't think it was him....
This is a crazy in this SPN episode the benders are villainious kooky southern folks with playing sickening game idea that hunt and kill run away victims by trapping and then shooting when escaping, but I did like Alexia fast👍 as Missy❤️😈 who makes facial wicked stare 😈❤️ then goes batty!😂 by spotting dean blowing stealth cover
I find humans much scarier than anything supernatural because i don't actually believe in vampires or demons but humans do fucked up shit. the episodes in this show where the bad thing is a human are the scariest to m, always. just like i always defend my love of shows like this or buffy or whatever because I DONT believe but something like Criminal Minds scares the crap out of me and gives me nightmares.
This episode is one of the most creepiest episodes of this entire show and one of my least favorite episodes. Always gives me the creeps and heebie jeebies.
It was the first episode aside from "Scarecrow" to feature "regular people" as the antagonist, which is why many people love this episode. Plus there's the fact that it got its title from an actual family that really were named the Benders.
