SPOILERS FOR SUPERNATURAL SEASON SIX. Death is my favorite minor character on the series. This guy is always awesome, and routinely scares the piss out of Dean Winchester.
I always thought him and Dean had a type of father and son/ mentor and student type of relationship with a glimpse of friendship and caring for each other.
"Heavier than it looks" This right here is why death gets so much respect. Not only is he pretty much omnipotent, but he's seen it all. Every rape death, every war death, every death from an abusive household, every mugging, every drowning, every torture. He's seen every single one of them. Its why he's so emotionally numb and...calm. Nothing phases him when he's seen ALL of humanity's evil since time was even a thing. Imo Dean got off easy with the little girl with the sickness. Imagine if Death gave him one where a child was in an abusive household and he couldn't do anything but watch. It would break him mentally. Death never rigged Dean's test. Absolutely none of us would be able to pass it
Yeah, Dean spouts off "it was rigged from the beginning" and honestly he's right. But it's not Death who did the rigging. It was humanity that did it. So Dean gets to see behind the curtain for a day and with barely a glance he doesn't quite understand that this wasn't Death rigging it against him. If anything, Death was being nice and picking a day where not a lot of bad happened.
I used to think Death did rig it to teach Dean a lesson, but it does occur to me that Death wouldn't have to deny it because Dean couldn't do anything about it anyway. I now think it's more that Death knew Dean would try to stop it and fuck up, but had faith that Dean would then learn his lesson and fix it. Not rigging the test, just knowing the likely outcome because Dean fixing it in the end after learning his lesson WAS the test.
Actually, Dean could have gotten involved in an abusive household scene and messed up the order even more. The rule wasn’t he couldn’t interact with people, the rule is that while wearing that ring, when he touches someone they died right? So girl getting beaten by the dad, and Dean touches the dad and kills him. Then girl ends up in foster care, and the next parent is even worse. Sexual abuse, not feeding her, things can always get worse. Just ask anyone who’s lived in foster care.
Lucifer: "Dean, do what I say!" Dean: "Screw you!" Lilith: "Dean, come to the dark side, it has nymphomaniacs!" Dean: "Nice try but hell no!" God: "Sup?" Dean: "Bite me you sociopathic asshat!" Death: "Sit." Dean: "Yessir." :D The way I see this scene is Dean finally realizing how badly he screws things up without giving a damn so Death said "You think it's so easy? Here, give it a shot." And when Dean gets back Death's like "Not so fun wearing the big boy pants, is it?"
Oh Death will be pissed once he is back. I think he did not find it entertaining to be stabbed by his own weapon, and Dean has the asskicking of his life coming for him.
@@Thatslifebro_ I don't think Death would be as to be one who holds grudges. If he does then he would've slain Lucifer just for binding him. Although, I'm really quite disappointed that they didn't bring back Julian Richings.
Am I the only one who thinks that this is a rather sweet scene in its own way. Death bringing dean a bacon dog and beer and does the "dad chat" of trying to get dean to learn something from his day as death. And even Death expressing some weariness of having to do what he does. Death is sick of death, who'd think it?
Killing EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE FOR WHO KNOWS HOW LONG!!! HAVING NO REMORSE, PITY, CANNOT EVER BE BARGAINED WITH AND….Being all alone. Yeah. I would grow VERY weary 😮💨 of it too.
I don't think it's so much that he is sick of death, it's more so he's sick of Sam and Dean wrecking the natural order and Castiel manipulating souls as a power source for power.
I can't help but notice that Death seems different in this scene, he seems somewhat less menacing and more wise and almost caring towards Dean, almost without he's usual level of disdain.
I'm sure Death is curious about Dean's decisions and such. Also he was Death for eternity up until his own death. I'm sure having a one day break was pleasant
I say its cause Death is trying to tell Dean how being Death isn't easy at all. Death has seen everything, and any person who did Death's job would mentally break from the horrors they see. Death is so old and has seen so much that he's numb to what he sees, and wants Dean to see what it's like through a normal person's eyes.
Lucifer Abbadon Crowley Lilith Metatron Gabriel Michael Raphael Azazel Castiel the other horsemen etc all aint got shit on Death. He's the only guy whose ever made Dean literally sit down and shut up haha
Someone on made a comment on another spn video that basically said "death likes fast food because many people die from it and death must think if they're willing to die for it then it must be really good".
@@theraven.4 Agreed, no mortal could do Death's job - extinguishing the lives of thousands or millions of different people every day - without completely going insane. Dean should've known from the get-go that no mortal can do an immortal's job.
meaturama nope, Death can annihilate him effortlessly he is a primordial Entity, the high level. The only one who matches his power is God and the only one who is probably more powerful than him is Amara, but that wasnt tested
Its just his job. Everything dies, everything finds peace, everything has an end. He knows how scared everyone is when it all ends and hoe they feel. He seems cold but its more of an understanding.
@@EveryoneElseIsWeirdImNormal I'm totally agree with you and that's the reason for which I had during a time attempted to convince some fans on RU-vid the Death of Julian Richings were in fact the same entity. Billie would be become "Death" in taking in her not only its power, becoming his "replacement", but its "essence". That's why I think the theory "Death(Julian Richings) could come back of the Empty at a moment of another" is flawed, because "all" which made the "individuality" of the character is passed in Billie's vessel, as a sort of "collective consciousness"(several incarnations sharing the same body).
@@lemondeestloeuvredunenfant4633 I personally like to think that death isn't dead but instead is using Billie to better get his plan across to the boys
I'm sorry, a "little" scared, Dean practically shits his pants every time he meets Death and laughs in the face of the other celestial beings he's faced.
Aww! Death brought Dean an awesome hot dog all the way from California. I hope he enjoyed it. I love Death. He's on eof my favorite characters on the show. Julian Richings is almost too big for the room.
something people need to understand Dean does what Death says because he is death he could end his life with a snap of his fingers ask yourselves would you sass a man who had control over your life one single insult to him and you'd be dead before you uttered the words.
I think it's because no one else ever dared to talk to them the way Dean does. It must make them curious that something as insignificant as a little human can behave that way, while they're easily able to crash him :P
Well, when you can kill angels, demons, and other deities, it gets to your head. Yet, it's different when you talk to an entity of the universe; one that has probably seen many Big Bangs of universes...
I don't know why. But if Dean hadn't killed this Death. I think that Dean would have become Death apprentice and eventually when Dean eventually did for good, Death would have offered him a job.
I wish the producer's of the show at the time actually delivered on the "Soul's Are Important" talk. It seemed like that was going to be a much bigger, story line arc than what they ended up doing at the end of the season. What Exactly was So Important About the Soul's, that death needed to know about "Something" about them?? :)
he was aware that someone is looking for the souls for himself and we find out in the end it was castiel and crowley all along so he pushed dean to dig because he know they can stop it, as he said they are in the frontline of the natural order
Best characterization of Death in TV or Movies ever and Ill stand by it. Julian Richings is by all accounts a totally unassuming and not very physically imposing person, But, there is never a time when he's speaking where you're not compelled to listen to every word. This character is what people unconsciously think of when they try to conceptualize Death as an entity. Calm and astute, but his words carry a ton of weight and purpose and with the tiniest shade of malice. Absolutely perfect cast and character
I think the reason Sam and Dean never really die permanently is because God willed it. They were his favorite story, so of course he would make sure they don't just die.
I love how Desth is the ONLY character that actually scares the shit out of Dean! That he's the only character that he CAN'T treat like dirt and get away with it! Dean has everyone else wrapped around his finger, especially the women, because they're either in love with him like Castiel or feel sorry for him like his doormat of a brother. Even the Darkness, the most powerful being in the universe, has become his bitch! But Death? When Death is involved, Dean has to be careful NOT to talk trash!
Why does Dean have to make Death use his serious voice, I mean he was all nice, even brought him a bacon dog to cheer him up, yet the motherfucker still makes him get serious, like dammit Dean just sit when he points at a goddam chair
This scene actually shows that Death actually does have empathy. He sympathizes with Dean here because he knows how much he values innocent lives other than his own. I mean he got a lethal injection just to talk to him about getting his brother’s soul back. Death wanted him to understand how impermanent ALL life was including his. He did it because he actually liked Dean. He certainly wouldn’t bother with anyone or anything that has no interest to him. Dean was so determined to fix everything except himself that Death decided to give him something that would keep him on his mission to protect the world.
I always LOVED how no matter how tough or dangerous the monster was Dean always lipped off at them and was brave. But as soon as Death shows up from time-to-time he is timid, stammering and with his head down.
He wasn't scared of The Darkness, he was scared of the outcome, he knew that if The Darkness were released, she'd do chaotic things, a thing that affects The Natural Order and many others to get her brother God's attention.
@@kingcrimson1467 after eternity of reaping souls that didn't deserve it, even a rock would feel bad about death's job. He's not the one killing people, but he is the one collecting and comforting/punishing them.
always loved this scene for a plethora of reasons. not the least of which is we get to see Dean genuinely cowed and intimidated. Not knocking Dean at all, i mean it IS Death. just that he has faced so much danger and death with such fearlessness that seeing him like this is a stark contrast to his normal, "i don't care who or what you are, screw you" type of attitude. the living embodiment of death, one of the extreme few able to genuinely humble Dean. that alone is a feat lol
It's funny if the soul was such a valuable ressource you'd think that we would have some form of powers equivalent to Angels to help defend it against demons.
Well when Sam and Adam went into the trap and the ground closed the rings were right there. Dean just kept them, and in the beginning of this episode when Dean and Death were talking about making the deal, Dean did mention about how he had his ring.
I’m with death on this. He agreed to be death, and hadn’t fully understood how even its spread can be. The good, bad, young, old, healthy, sick. His task was simple. Kill them when their time came and stay detached. But when emotions came into it he was conflicted. Dean wasn’t impartial, he judged who should live and die, whereas death just claims them all. Apart from the disrespect I think that’s why he was so annoyed, he gave him a task and he failed it not because it was rigged but because he simply didn’t succeed because of his own actions.
Why do i get the feeling when Death is talking about souls its going to tie in to the final season in some way.... I can almost guarantee that the original Death will return in the finale
At 0:29, when first seeing this scene like (a decade ago, wow), I literally thought Death was calling Dean "Shit" and not telling him to "Sit". I loved Death as a character. Amazing job done. Also, felt awesome that the first location you see death was the city I grew up in. The walk in Chicago with "Oh Death" was amazing and baddass. Wanted that bacon dog to eat. At least I got deep dish. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6crMKpLx7r8.html (death walk in Chicago)
What did they do with war, famine and pestilence’ rings what did they burn them or were they buried along with death’s ring Edit: I spelt were with where
Just talking to Dean versus Sam you can see the difference. Jean is more hardened and doesn’t want to except some stuff but Sam would’ve accepted his own loses. When death talks to Dean I can’t help but feel there’s a level of trying open the eyes of ‘don’t throw your life away so easily because it’s more valuable then you can do ever know or understand.’
I wonder if the original Death had a thing for Dean!the way Billie acts right now,it's so clear that she does!but the original Death,he kept saying Dean is rude and he and his brother are like this or like that!but, while he actually can kill Dean whenever he wants,he doesn't do(maybe it's because of the books or some prophecy)and he could screw in Dean's works whenever he wants!especially when Dean literally captured him,but he didn't!he helped him in both the apocalypse and Godstiel's case without even a little punishment(that was the thing which he really could do!something Billie did before becoming death)and bringing him the foods which he loves😁and even eat the food which Dean made with pleasure😁I'm really wonder!because unlike Billie he more tries to be mysterious but in the end acts as opposite of his behavior😁😁😁
Really makes you wonder high up Dean and Sam really are up in ranks almost like even Death knew everything that was going to happen from the two of them he most likely even knew they were going to reap him. Almost seems like the two were being groomed to become cosmic
Yea, and I remember The Horsemen Pestilence wasn't too happy about what Sam and Dean did to the first 2 Horsemen, and those 3 were causing trouble. Death was more like eh, yea it sucks what happened to them but I'm not going to make a big fuss about it. As far as the other rings, we never really found out. All we know is that he gave Death HIS ring back but we never knew what happened with the other 3.
Understand when you need to. Same guy, who in the next season chewed Sam and Dean out for not understanding sooner. Death is cool and all, but damn did he deserve a gibbs slap for that one.
