"The Great Escapist" Official Description:
FEELING LUCKY TONIGHT? - When Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) receive a distressing video message from Kevin Tran (guest star Osric Chau), they set about trying to uncover the Third Trial. The boys make a discovery that sends them to a casino in Colorado, to find a mysterious recluse (guest star Curtis Armstrong) who may be able to fill in the holes in Kevin's research. Meanwhile, Crowley (guest star Mark Sheppard) is on a winning streak. Castiel (Misha Collins) tries to elude Naomi (guest star Amanda Tapping) and the angels hunting him. Robert Duncan McNeill directed the episode written by Ben Edlund (#821)

Actually, it is an opinion. Eric Kripke's opinion, who created the show. "It's always been a show about 2 brothers. Everyone else will come and go." No angels, no demons, no monsters and no mythology arcs are as important as the relationship between Sam and Dean. Everything else is used in Supernatural just to show how far these two brothers are willing to go for each other. Long, long, loooooong before Castiel was involved and even after that, the show WAS and still IS about Sam and Dean!

I somehow can't get over the fact that Dean knows exactly how many days it has been since Sam has eaten something, while Sam himself doesn't. I don't know why, maybe because it shows just how much Dean cares for his brother also he doesn't always show it.

I love how Dean went from a hovering, nurturing Mom in the beginning of the scene & by 0:43 his look changes to a stern Dad, "Listen young man, you will eat your soup right freaking now or I swear to Chuck...".

And one last thing. On Comic Con 2012, Jensen was asked: "Why Dean forgives Sam so easily but it took him long time to forgive Cas?" And Jensen replied: "I think the easy answer for that is because Sam is his brother, his flesh and blood". I think that answer must speak volumes! This is Jensen's opinion, who played Dean for 8 years. He knows his character and what the show is about. Cas is a supernatural being and the brothers stick for "what keeps them human". Again Jensen's words.

Bless you and your beautiful ranting. You're exactly right. Dean is Sammy's protector and he always will be. The fact that people are complaining about Dean trying to take care of his brother is ridiculous. Especially since he's clearly not capable of taking care of himself. Dean loves him more than anything. Of course he'll do everything he can to help him. And it's happening throughout the whole season because Sam took on something he can't handle alone and Dean's just trying to help him deal.

For Sam, the point of the Trials is endurance, and going through a process of purification, so that he can shut the gates of hell. It's his quest. For Dean, the Trials are about watching his brother undergo this quest which ruins his health and his stamina and endangers his life...so it's a feeling of helplessness that he can't prevent a dire outcome for Sam, and also fear that the Trials are going to cost him his brother. He wants to shut the gates of hell, he does, but he's not willing to lose his brother to do it. The mother henning is Dean trying to do what he can to help, and his expression of his fear that if he doesn't take good care of Sam...he's going to lose him. Anyone who's ever had a sick kid knows about that sense of helplessness and fear, and just wishing there was something you could do to take away the kid's pain and suffering. This is so well played by both of them!

Also, I think you should stop shove Castiel in everything, it's quite annoying. Yes, he helped BOTH Sam and Dean, he is their friend, but he will never be as important for Dean as Sam is. Sam will always come first, like it or not. Sam is his brother and Dean's "only family". Dean said those words to Henry Winchester this season. Dean watched out for Sam since day one, he raised him and he ain't going to stop taking care of Sam till the end of his life. Dean is a BIG BROTHER first, then a hunter

Exactly. It really bothers me because this show isn't about romantic relationships or anything like that, it's about the supernatural, friendship, and the love of two brothers. Most of the fan base is destiel which really makes me kind of disturbed. Or even wincest for that matter. I get if you read fanfiction outside of the show but I just can't understand how you would ship them in the show...I don't see them like that. And not only that. Destiel fans tend to take it to the extreme. They say Misha is gay for Jensen or vice versa. They always ask them destiel questions and you can just see Jensen get visibly annoyed and uncomfortable. And even people ship J2 in a sexual way and I just can not see them. I don't like/get how people can do that, especially if you know it makes them uncomfortable.

....You do realize the words "The Epic Love Story of Sam and Dean" was said by show creator Eric Kripke himself, right? In the DVD commentary? I was pointing that out (and called it familiar love, which means family if you're still confused) to show that the show is about Sam & Dean, straight from the horse's mouth. You sure you know this show inside and out, man? That's a pretty basic tagline.

@Kiari Moon, you DO realize that they're the only family they have right? Dean is worried sick about Sam, if the only family you have left looks like a fucking skeleton- is coughing up blood, wouldn't you be terrified? Not only that but he isn't eating, if I were in Dean's position, I'd be making soup too. Also note, whenever Sam was sick, Mary wasn't around to mother him, neither was John. One was dead and the other was busy with monsters. Being a 'caretaker' was always part of dean's character

This just always melts my heart! Even after the whole drama of Sam not looking for Dean when he was in purgatory and Sam being a total jerk this season, Dean took care of Sam through the very end! I wish someone could take care of him like that. :(

Dean always took care of sam and he made him breakfast before, remember? when he was hallucinating with Satan. is it because he's telling him the spoon airplane thing? he's joking. just like he joked in season one saying, "that was beautiful. hold me sam." he jokes all the time. plus, he put a spoon in sam's mouth before during a prank. XD so he's used to it. lol

I miss this supernatural when it was about Sam and Dean instead of Jack and Mary and the side characters. The only good seasons were Sam's season when he has an arc. And he didn't have one since s8.

Yeah, that's totally believe. Watching Sam stumble out of purgatory, seeing his health deteriorate, all of that combined is going to make Dean saying "Eh, just stay healthy, bro!" seem plausible. Dude, if you remember, Dean has said the words "I couldn't live with you dead. Couldn't do it." and "Taking care of Sam is who I am". Dean would die if something happened to Sam, so taking care of him is also taking care of himself in a way.

I'm happy that Dean has had a lot of character development this season. I'm terrified of what's happening to Sam, I'm starting to think the trials are killing the demon part of him that has been lying dormant (that would make sense, right? Since the trials are meant to close the gates of hell?). I'm also worried about Cas, though.. especially after seeing the promo for the next episode. It looks like either Crowley or Naomi (or both, who knows) caught up with him..

Let the man feed you Sam, let him give you a blanket and warm cocoa. Dean should help Sam, you said it yourself. So praytell, if someone is exhibiting the signs of a fever ("throwing off heatwaves", not eating) then yeah, Dean is going to do the things he knows would cure that. They haven't exactly encountered trial sickness before, and Dean obviously isn't just going to sit around and watch Sam suffer. Even if he has to do something as silly as make him soup and take his temperature, he's going to do it to help Sam.

Sam doesn't even "want it" as much as a toddler with a rash doesn't "want" to go to the doctor. Sam is not fully capable of taking care of himself, you heard his symptoms. He shakes too much to even shoot a gun. He hasn't eaten in three days, and just last episode he slept 24+ hours. Dean hasn't is doing what he says is his job: taking care of Sam so he can get better and they do what they gotta do. But for that to happen SAM MUST GET BETTER.

This is about Sam and Dean. If you hadn't noticed: last episode? Dean and Charlie had the most dialogue together. Dean and Charlie shot the monsters and solved the mystery, we barely saw Sam. In 8.17, Sam waited outside with Meg while Dean and Castiel went to fight the baddies (and Sam didn't even get to fight Crowley with Meg, so he was out of the shot longer). Dean and Sam's plots are the same, they're intertwined. They tackle things together. That's it. That's the thing.

I think his selfless care of family is way more,than just a part of him. Take it out and there's not much left. And since when anything is fair to Dean?All his life he's getting kicked in the balls for good intentions,just now he's opening a bit,he's a little more human, more than just a hunter with a cocky smile and fabulous ass. Now he knows how it feels to lose everything-even more, than before.And I dont think he's any less of the things he was before - but Sammy comes first, he always has.

Bobby's had major story lines, Kevin has a major storyline right now. Driving the plot of the show is exactly what *supporting* characters and plot lines do. They intertwine with the maine point to drive it along. The show is about Sam and Dean, but it can't just be them all the time. Every show needs supporting character and lines. It's...really just that simple, I can't break it down any further for you here.

Uh, have you watched the precvious episodes, mate? He already did that. Heck, he did that just last episode, and Sam still went out on his own. So now Dean's cracking down, he's making Sam get better rather than just encouraging him to. The old tactic didn't work, and he's not going to lie down on his job (which is making Sam get better so they can do what they gotta do). And when Sam wouldn't stop? Go on, tell me what Dean did (hint: it wasn't nothing).

Castiel isn't exactly a regular, if you recall. Every time he shows up, it's labeled "Guest Appearance: Misha Collins as Castiel". He's a guest actor, same as Jim Beaver and Osric Chau. In the Bobby Days, he did have a good number of eps, same with Kevin, but just like Castiel, none of them are regulars to the point where they are as consistent as Sam and Dean. These are the facts, dude. You can accept them or not. The gr8 thing about facts is that they're true whether you believe hem or not.

Every time I see a sneak peek, the comments section is this epic battle between fans, usually either about Sam and his propensity to get himself killed in mytharcs while zomg! Dean doesn't, or about Castiel's function in the show. It's kind of hilarious.

Not to mention he has to get Sam healthy fast so they can both take on the Big Bad, and that requires "mother hen"-ing. Dude, it kind of just sounds like you're being sad about Castiel here. Look, just a bit of a heads up: This show is, quote Jensen Ackles, "A story about 2 brothers". It's about 2 brothers and the ragtag family they acquire along the way (a brother in Kevin and Castiel, a sister in Charlie, a dad in Bobby), but 2 brothers ultimately. They have to take care of each other, man

Uh, no, dude, it's not an opinion. When the creator (+Sera Gamble), the director, and the actors say "This is a show about 2 brothers", it's kind of in anyone's best interest to note that they probably know what they're talking about. Like I said: Cas is important, as is Bobby and Kevin, but they're not the main characters. They're support characters. Supporting meaning they support the main plot and characters, those being Sam and Dean and they're problems..

I agree with everyone else. I like how season 8 is more like season 1 and has a lot of these "stand alone" story episodes but I feel like they kind of just gave all the action stuff to Sam. I was really hoping Dean got to do the trials but they just snatched it from him. :/ I mean it's cool that Dean got to go to Purgatory but then Sam got a dose of that as well...so what did Dean really get that Sam didn't this season?

Since when did Supernatural become all about who kisses who? last time I checked it was about family and sticking together during hard times. This episode looks fantastic regardless if your a Wincest fan or a Destiel shipper. Enjoy the fact that we still get to watch Sam and Dean and Cas on our tv screens!

- it was 40 years alone, without his family. I can't imagine how many times deamons used that against him, his lonliness, his family, his faliure. When he gets back he tries to put things the way they were before, pretend nothing happened, because that's all he's left - illusion of normality. If he admits he's nothing but a broken solider, void and dead inside. He takes that emptiness and fills it with his family

If you know this show inside in out, why are you acquatting Dean taking care of Sam with him being "OOC"? Actually, the picture you're painting--Dean just telling Sam to get better and having him handle it on his own--is so opposite Dean's character, if you hadn't used his name I wouldn't know who you were referencing. You think taking care of your brother who looks like death personified is codependent? "You haven't eaten in 3 days, let me make you eat so you don't die" oh, the codependency!

When Dean identifying with Castiel means Castiel is a main character and a central point of the show, I'll make sure to tell you. But it's not. Like I said before: Castiel, Kevin, Bobby, Charlie, all of those guys are Dean and Sam's makeshift family. Y'know "Family don't end with blood", but much like Kevin, Bobby, and Charlie, Castiel isn't their central point. Their central point is each other. That's it, that's the show. It's not a bias thing, it's a factual thing.

...The creator's opinion is his opinion? The person who designed the show, the characters, the plots...his opinion is just an opinion? No, dude. When asked to describe Supernatural, that was his response. Y'know, it's hard to keep credibility when you're calling the creator's factual points "opinions" and saying they don't matter. Just a tip. Yeah, you're straw maning there. I said Jensen, Jared, and Misha have all said it's a story about two brothers. Not two brothers and an angel.

Once and that's in doubt cause it's unlikely they'd of put the devil's cage in a place where all his minons are & likely to free him. The 2nd time was all of a day to rescue Bobby where he wasn't physically/mentally tortured so it wasn't like it was a badge of honor.

No, you brought up "TFW" and since your first conclusion was to harp on "brother fans" and bring up Wincest fanfiction, and your page is littered with "Dean and Castiel are in real romance!", I think it's a safe guess. Not to mention you're a tumblr-user, so your opinion being unreasonably polarized is understandable. Ignoring? How, exactly? If me pointing out that the show is about Dean and Sam is ignoring their relationship, Ackles has been ignoring it for years.

You didn't get that Dean trying to feed Sam--bringing up the childish airplane thing--was humor? You dont' get that if Sam has a fever, Dean would probably do something like, oh, try to see how bad it is since Sam won't tell him? These are all pretty logical conclusions, man. You're trying to force it into something different, for seemingly arbitrary reasons. This show actually does come down to Sam and Dean. The creator said it, Jensen and Jared have said it, and even Misha has said it.

There's a reason Cas isn't in every episode. He's a plot device, first and foremost. A living deux ex machina (pardon the pun). A character who was supposed to be killed off within 3 episodes of his introduction. He was never written to be a main character so that takes time. Sure, there's more time for him to become one, if the finale speculations are true then he's got all of season 9, but right now he's supporting and D & S are the protagonists. He's important, but not the main bro.

Sure, you could consider me a "Wincest" shipper if you'd like, but you'd also have to call me someone with reading comprehension because I undertand the show's plot points and what a supporting character entails. It's not an opinion that the show is about Sam and Dean. It's very frustrating you can't get that. I pointed out to you about three quotes so far telling you otherwise. Stop screaming and read, yeah? @Kiari Moon I've read 400ish spn fanfics until now and most of them contain scenes like this, surprise surprise the writers don't even ship wincest. I don't ship wincest but I'm a sucker for their bro-ment. Too bad you can't enjoy It as much as I do. Actually the mother hen crap goes both way. Remember when Dean got electrocuted? Sam was one hell of a mother hen back then. And season 4 was a compilation of Sam babying Dean and we bitched back then too so this conversation is no surprise for me,

You should stop checking tumblr, all of your talking points are ones I've heard (numerous times) before. Dude, your opinion is that Castiel is as much a main character Dean and Sam. That's an opinion. Me telling you, relaying things the cast and crew have said about the show being about Sam and Dean, is a fact. I brought up actual quotes. It's not a polarized opinion if it's an evidence-backed fact. C'mon now, let's look alive here.
