i mean, there's the fact that amelia next to manipulated him into a relationship with her, if not initially a romantic one, by forcing him to adopt the dog he hit. not only was that a terrible move on a veterinary end, it also placed an already very traumatized man into a situation in which that dog, and amelia, were all he had to hang onto. iirc, sam had no reason to think dean and cas could still be alive at that point (or even know that purgatory was a place non-monsters could feasibly go), bobby had only just died as well, and he was still comparatively fresh out of the cage. he was ... falling apart and trying really hard to hold himself together. i don't think he made the active CHOICE to only base his new life around amelia, but when you're sinking as badly as he was, you need a line. sam in s8 is a shell of the man he was in s1. he didn't have the ability at that point to create the kind of life that he did at stanford; he was already too beaten down. he just really, really needed something to grab onto. his relationship with amelia was pretty healthy, all things considered, and that was the only thing he wanted at that point in time: something normal and safe. it's worth noting, also, that he DID have plans to go back to college, but his life was derailed by dean's return before that could happen.

That's exactly why, he makes things too easy, so the writers have to keep coming up with reasons to keep him away (Also the network didn't want to pay 3 co-stars)

@@audreyii6750 atp misha had been a main cast member before already so idk why pay would be an issue. maybe the writers should've dedicated the energy they spent writing him out into coming up with more creative monster of the week eps then lol. or have an episode span multiple hunts and have cas' powers being useful be the through line. or show the boys and cas on the road together before/after a hunt as a one-off slice of life thing. they had many options and chose the least interesting one.

agree. one of the reason dean and cas have such an interesting dynamic is because cas isn't a blood family member -- he gives dean someone to bounce off of that doesn't have all the winchester family emotional baggage attached (the way sam or any other character who knew their father did)

We are quite literally asked to compare Sam & Amelia's (flashback) relationship to Dean & Cas' _current_ relationship (with Sam & Cas being the ones "running from something" and Dean/Amelia being the "he makes me happy" one) We are directly asked to compare Dean/Cas to a romantic relationship in this episode

You are not only 100% right but not alone! No one likes Amelia or the flashbacks. And Sam doesn’t feel or act like himself, he just feels boring and brooding

Sam isn't the only one on the show. Don't like fast forward or skip the episode. Amelia was a abusive bitch and emotionally manipulative. Sam must of been hit by the stupid forest. Thankfully he came to his senses and dumped her. Unfortunately he bludgeoned Dean with her 1st.

@@andreasmith9809 Alot of people say that about the earlier seasons but I don't agree. I feel like both Dean & Sam had enough screentime, development and involvement in the main plot of those seasons. But not so much in the latter seasons
