JJared Padalecki (Supernatural, Gilmore Girls) joins me this week to reflect on his SP Family and rollercoaster that these last 15 years have been.
Jared shares the emotions he’s had during some of the “last” moments while shooting the final episodes and talks about not wanting the ride to end, for good.
We also talk about self fulfilling prophecies with anxiety and depression, Jared’s newfound respect for his wife after fathering during quarantine, and what exactly led to his arrest a few months back. Love this dude, completely open book.

There are few celebrities I have more respect for than Jared Padalecki. His openness with regards to mental illness is important, and he's one of the few people with such a platform that actually uses it to put that important issue to the forefront. The fact that he had a slip-up is, to me, more a positive than a negative, at least in terms of the people that look up to him. "He's this millionaire actor, but hey, he had an issue like I had an issue." His work to get rid of the stigma that plagues mental illness is inspiring, and commands commendation. Great episode.

@Panda72021

I remember reading a magazine interview with Jared online; about his mental health issues rearing it's ugly head during filming of the 3rd season of Supernatural, and he had said something along the lines of "I had dogs, friends and family members who I knew loved me, but I was depressed anyway". That quote helped me realize that it was okay to admit to being depressed, and that I needed help for my own depression and anxiety. I was the kind of person who would viciously beat myself up at the first sign of depression, telling myself that I was being a conceited asshole for feeling sad "for no reason", telling myself that I had no right to be upset when other people out there had it worse, that I was being overly dramatic, etc. I had found Supernatural in 2014 or 2015 ( I forget exactly) only a little while after my own health issues took a dive in 2013. So having someone out there KNOW what it felt like, and to be open an honest about mental health, really helped me come to terms with my own.
@coffeegirl18
@coffeegirl18 3 года назад
I totally get that. I've had anxiety attacks for no reason sometimes too. I eventually learned to have them and work through them.
@Panda72021
@Panda72021 3 года назад
@@coffeegirl18 Exactly, it's the ones that come out of nowhere that annoy me the most. Because if I'm anxious for a specific reason, I kinda have a chance to use logic to settle myself down, but if I'm just chilling and my heartbeat decides to randomly go into overdrive, then I'm just panicked AND confused.
@Cervateus
@Cervateus 3 года назад
It's so sad that people feel that way. If you break your arm, most people wouldn't be thinking "I/You should be glad that I/you still have your arm, there are people out there with only one arm!" Just because someone might, from a objective standpoint, have it worse, doesn't change the fact that your arm is broken, and that it hurts. By that logic, pretty much no one should be allowed feel bad (physically or mentally), because there's always someone else that has got it worse. But for some reason, we as humans seem to think that emotional well being is completely different than physical. All it does is invalidate peoples feelings, and then people start feeling even worse because they're feeling bad and it's a downwards spiral. It's stupid that seeing a doctor for your body is completely normal and fine, but seeing one for your mental health is frowned upon. Seen as weak. Society truly does suck sometimes... Depression is one of the biggest killers in the affluent Europe and America, yet we keep treating it like something to be ashamed of. So I agree, it's nice seeing people who actually can reach and affect a lot of people be open about mental health. I wish more people would follow that example.

when it comes to being there for your dog's last moments: I have worked at both an animal shelter and a vet clinic, and I have seen up close what happens when owners aren't there for that, I have seen dog's that came in pretty much already gone fighting the sedatives and stuff and completely panic because they kept looking for their owner that wasn't there, and that is the worst thing ever! and besides, that dog has been by your side and your best friend for years and has supported you through everything, so I'd say it's only fair to return the favor for those last moments... so yeah, it will be hard and there will be tears and all of that, but on behalf of all dogs, spare them the "my person isn't here for the scariest day of my life" panic and be there, just be there, they'd do the same for you

There are 2 sides to a story for a reason. People were just too quick on dragging him cause they saw him stumble. He wasn't to be blamed fully for what went down to begin with, cause it was so out of character for him + the cameras just happened to be right there, sus from the start. Nevertheless, I'm truly proud of Jared and how he handled himself and turned that to better himself.

I remember my first gut reaction when I heard about Jared's arrest was "Oh, please say people aren't going to hold this over him." People make mistakes - some are bigger than others - but I grew up in a college town and I know how easy and common it is for an individual to lose control. And to be frank, having a history of chronic depression among other things makes the blow that much harder (I think my grammar sucked there, but nothing highlighted). Anyway, I can only thank God that Jared has a community of support - not enablement, not cover-up, but genuine support. Michael, you've always been a part of that community from the WB/CW Branch and your session here with Jared is just another part of that community of support. I'm now a subscriber!

I'm thankful for Jared's advice and that he's so open with his mental health, because sometimes it's easy to get lost in the hopelessness of Depression and Suicide, and just feeling like nothing will get better, you just get trapped on all the negative thoughts, memories, things you've fucked up and it's just hard, I've been depressed the majority of my life kind of just something I've had to live with and like him and Michael said it's kind of just there in the car with you, and you can't kick it out but you can still tell it to fuck off, but it's not always easy, I've made a few attempts in my 23 years of life, been hospitalized, and my Therapist never really helped, but to be honest probably should've tried someone else, her advice was usually to pray or read the Book of Mormon even though I'd told her more than once I'm Atheist, so more than anything I'd go to the sessions and just be annoyed. Anyway Anxiety is probably what I've made the most progress on, used to be so bad I could hardly say hello to a stranger, I was too scared to order food at a restaurant. But now it's not nearly as severe, I still get Anxiety from having to drive somewhere, or talking on the phone, it's mostly small things now, but I still can't help but overly worry about the most trivial things. Anyway my point is, it's easy to get lost in all the bad, but I think Jared offered great advice, to maybe try and help yourself get away from that. Really need to thank him and everyone else who worked on Supernatural, because it's helped me get through a lot.

I teared up a lot about the sick/dead pets. I had my first dog on my own die this past Christmas (she was 11) and I had two of my giant rabbits killed by a fox/coyote - I wish they just went missing vs my Dad finding them like that. My new rescue dog basically got me through everything and he's an amazing pup...He was abused by his first owner and the second owner didn't have the space for him. I had mom take him to the vet while I was under quarantine for a checkup and she asked if he was going to be a therapy dog. When I got him he would shake and shrink into himself. I kept training him though and he really enjoyed reward based training/doing zoomies in my large backyard. I totally get the reference of the food as reward and the psychiatry vs psychologist. I went to a psychiatrist when I was 21 and she was fantastic, she just wanted me to talk through things then basically said "There's nothing that wrong with you but you definitely have Generalized Anxiety Disorder." I had panic attacks as a teen and I kept feeling like I was going to die. I was later diagnosed with lyme disease which can cause heightened mental illness issues and am basically cured/in remission now. I honestly thought he was either drugged or possibly had a bipolar episode. My grandpa was bipolar and would be an entirely different person when he drank. I'm happy Jared's okay now.

I came because I saw Jared was on but man, hearing Michael talking at the start, I’m hooked in and will be back for every episode now. Your family are in my thoughts, it’s such a hard process when you have a terminally ill family member, especially when it’s 15 years. Sending so much love your way and thank you for sharing this and making me cry. You are a special and wonderful human Michael Rosenbaum ❤️

What a great podcast! This episode with Jared was amazing. Could listen for hours. I love how he's always open about his issues and troubles. And I also saw how uncomfortable he was talking about his arrest but he kept going. Very brave to stop drinking. His love to his dogs is one of the many reasons I love him so much. I'm really rooting for his success and I liked that it will be an all new Texas Ranger. But what really surprised me was that he's the classic car man. The others always pointed him like the one most likely to hit the impala. But well done. They both deserved. All the success J2!

this is just gonna be me crying along with Jared. I went through the same thing with my dog in February, having to put her done. She was 14 almost 14 1/2, and she was my baby. One of the hardest things I have to do in my life. Totally understand the pain and sadness Jared.

This was my first watch of this podcast, came on to see Jared. Really enjoyed Michael‘s approach and openness so I will be watch more. In regards to Jared, I’m lucky to have met him on a couple of occasions because my cousin worked for him on Supernatural. Such a great, personable guy and that really comes across in this interview. What really struck me personally was his sharing of his dog Sadie‘s death. My dog is 15 too, and has the same issues Sadie did. Jared describing to Michael how someone knows when it is time to let go was something I needed to know at just this time. On another note, Supernatural was such a big part of Vancouver’s film industry, will truly be missed.

I had the exact same situation as Jared, minus the fighting, but I was at a friend's flat, was handed a drink from someone I knew and trusted and blacked out at the party and passed out in one of the bedrooms... I didn't remember most of the night, but luckily was with friends who never left me. Turns out I had been handed a drink my friend was given by someone else and it had been spiked. I had only had four ciders that night as well as this drink I was handed, definitely not enough for me to black out. It really can happened anywhere, and it was definitely a reminder for me to be more careful.

It was just SO not Jared it was insane like as soon as i saw the video i just knew Jared was drugged i just knew and i've never met him but i interact a lot with him on Twitter and with Jensen and Misha too and i've watched Cons, Interviews and all the Heart-To-Hearts they've had with us they let us get to know them and make it clear who they are and how they don't behave and i know them i know who they are and how they normally are and THAT was scary Jared looked messed up. I knew straight away somebody must have spiked his drink or something cos nah even when someone is drunk they don't behave that way you can't stay stood up so well like that and then start wrestling somebody when drunk cos you're so dizzy and i thought the wrestling was like him playing cos that's him too but now he's saying he thought he was being attacked? nah... he was totally tripping out, Spice is big on the market too it's the next big drug and i reckon that's what he was drugged with cos he just kept trying to fall backwards but kind of like arching himself it's like a distinctive way someone high on it does that nothing else is like that and they can get hyperactive, some ppl just go batshit and fling themselves through somebody's window. Nah i knew in my heart that SO not him and i want to hug Jared so so much and i'm glad you were okay too.

The actual difference is that psychologists have PhD's in Pychology and work in a variety of fields, from behavior analysis to forensics. Psychiatrists are Medical Doctors and undergo the same initial training in medical school as neurologists, cardiologists, surgeons, etc, and then 4-year residency program prior to starting careers. So a Psychiatrist is, by training, closer to a neurologist than a psychologist. Their jobs are to evaluate and diagnose neuro-pyschiatric disorders and prescribed a plan of care. They typically no longer do counseling or therapy. Therapy is typically the job of licensed therapists and, in some states, licensed clinical social workers. The confusion comes from an archaic view of psychiatry still painted in media and film of the "armchair shrink", which hasn't been the norm for decades. Hope this clears things up. Much love to Jared for seeking help from both!

I've only have had one dog in my life (my current boi). He's 13 right now and months ago I was really afraid that his time was quickly coming to an end. His name is Rideau (after the Canadian Canal) and he's a gorgeous German shepherd husky mix. He basically has the furryness and shape of a husky but the tan and black coloration of a German shepherd including amber eyes and dramatic black eyeliner. We really, really lucked out with him as he's our family's first dog and he never had any behavioral issues. He doesn't bark, doesn't chew, hump, fight, poop indoors and he automatically knew that we didn't want him on the couches or carpet or hardwood (our main level is tile). He's a great dog. He's got the temperament of a really chill German shepherd...hes almost like a golden retriever or newf. Weirdly enough, he does not howl...i don't think he knows how. The closest he'll get is doing his singing routine when he sees we've finished our supper and he knows it's his turn. Lol There was a time a year ago that I was really, really struggling with because he suddenly was completely unable to walk. It was heartbreaking, he just kept falling and falling. Took him to the vet and he was diagnosed with "old dog syndrome". Apparently it was like a mini stroke and it caused him to have bad vertigo and he couldn't stay up because he was dizzy. But the vet told us that it's temporary and in a few weeks he'll get back to normal. Slowly but surely he got better and I've never been more proud of him! Sadly a few months ago we really worried he was close to the end. He was barely eating and was super slow walking and he began to drag his hind legs just like Jared's dog was doing. He's slowly losing sensation and control in his back legs and it can become progressive. I became determined to find him a wheelchair so he'll never stop moving but I haven't needed to yet! Slowly he's been readjusting himself and learning how to compensate. His front legs have gotten much stronger to pull himself up. If his hind end starts to sink on a walk I simply have to lift his belly and he can continue. He does require me to support his hind end when he's going up stairs though. But it's become so much better and more manageable then before and he's less frustrated. And! He's eating again! We stopped feeding him once a day, dry kibble. Now he eats a breakfast and supper of half kibble half wet dog food mixed with a little water (I call it doggie cereal) and his pain medication. There is hope guys! Your dog can surprise you!

Holy shit this one resonated with me. First of all, all the love to you and your family, man. My dad had a family before he met my mum, and that brother of mine passed away from cancer last year. He was 39 so an adult, but yeah. I met him at most once a year and we didn't grow up together the way me and my other brother did. I mean sure, I guess we had a relationship so it sucked, but his passing just really destroyed my dad, it was really fucking difficult to watch =/ Second of all, sort of like your guest I stopped drinking after I just realized I become an ASSHOLE with alcohol in my system (there were a few incidents). And damn, I can't even tell you how many times each month people tell me that I should take a glass or two (I'm from one of those European countries where drinking is insanely normalized and almost mandatory) and it annoys the living shit out of me that people can't just accept that I don't like the person I become with alkohol, so I have quit it. Yeah, I don't know, it just felt good hearing someone you admire have a similar story. Anyways, I found the podcast because of the Supernatural boys, but I'm absolutely sticking around and subscribing! Thanks for reading, take care and pls be safe.
