Welcome to the M0OGY Radio and Antenna Review channel.
Today I bring you the new to market Superstar 3900 transceiver marketed by Pihernz from Spain.
In this first part of a multi-part product review ,I look at the receive capability in all modes.
On first impressions it really does sound very well on SSB and sounds far better than some previously made radios from China.
The main problem (currently) is the lack of software to programme the unit, to remove the awful beeps and change the microphone from the supplied condenser type to the aftermarket dynamic type.
But let's hope decent software is available for the second production run that is rumoured to be in the Retailers by April 2023.
Please note I have no affiliation with Pihernz and purchased this radio from Doug at Knights Electrocom in Lincolnshire.
One of a very small number supplied to a handful of UK Retailers in January 2023.

Receive sounds excellent. Not surprising as it has the same board as the crt7900v. Get rid of the annoying beep and it should be a great radio 👍

That's the only problem, it's very well made and put together Delboy, I think with some Software and a nice aftermarket microphone it will be a keeper

When that skip rolls in, it never gets old the thrill I get when out of all that "hash" and "QRM" somebody out there in the distance is acknowledging my calls. Haven't been at it for a while, but listening to you're rig makes me want to set up again. What I really want right now is a good sensitive short wave receiver with a fully filtered front end that I can tune continuously across the band.

Cracking vid as always Dave and good to see you back with something new and dare I say, very much improved on some of the 3900 versions previously on the market. My CRT version drifts horrid for about 30 to 40 mins then is stable after that. My Dirland 3900 takes a couple of minutes to stop with the slight drift it has.

Thanks Mate, this is stable from the word go, it has the similar PCB board as the much loved CRT SS7900V , but whilst it has noise reduction, it doesn't have the separate board, I think once this software is workable and you can program it and get rid of that God awful bleep it will be a good option for us who like the older look radios, just a shame it hasn't got a frequency counter take off socket your older radio, but there again maybe it doesn't need you to move up and down the band with the heat like the previous one.

the 7900 board inside would have sealed the deal for me... but early days yet.. love the classic look... its what most of us want but with all the bells and whistles.. software tweeks for beeps ect just might sort he snags out...

@@volvof86 I didn't know who it was TBH, your retro love of the F86 brings back memories of riding shot gun in an S registered one to Grimsby test centre with flat trailers in 1984, looking out that curved back window.......happy times!

The price is certainly attractive, and for fossils like me that cut our teeth on the 148 and 360, encouraging that a fossil-compatible box is there. But. Bleeping every channel shift? Good Grief. The Knights blurb refers to menus for various choice-changes. How to access a "menu" with no screen? Through software? I think I'd gladly sacrifice that SupLow band for having that 27/81 band on band6 position. Guessing no standard access to the gap-alphas between 3/4, 7/8, 11/12, 15/16, 19/20? Does the slider give the same range as the old rigs? usually 6kcs either side of centre. My old 360 gives dead on -5kc to the left, no need to search for the zeros. Very handy! Thanks for these analyses Dave, very useful! Looking forward to the rest of it.

Cheers Ian, I will show the menu, basically you press the channel change button on the mic and it scrolls through the two LED chanel numbers and at the same time flashes the TX/RX light from red/green to amber, quite clever TBH.

This radio bears a resemblance to an old export rig we had in America called the Cobra 148DX. I had one of the first ones available in the Chicago area as these were leaked out of the Dynascan factory which was also in Chicago. Cool old rig, I worked a lot of dx with it back in the day.

Looks to perform very well. The S-meter doesn't move much on SSB, but I could live with it otherwise.

@@m0ogy It isn't a big issue, but it is annoying. It makes it seem like you are using the radio on AM rather than SSB. Also looking at your part 32 video the S meter seems very slow to move at other times too.

Hi David, I have seen your youtube videos on the new Superstar 3900 and I have also seen that you have tested it in stock mode. I bought it too and I wanted to know from you, if the COARSE command doesn't work in stock mode, but it works only after the modification. In stock mode only work the FINE command.

The meter moves a lot slower less erratic which i think is better tbh as its easier to get a peak reading on ssb. i dont have this radio but i have the dx5000 plus. If its anything like that internally they are very stable frequency wise because they are oven controlled.

Is there a dedicated uk40 band or do you have to tune using the clarifyer on one of the other bands???

That radio will look the same in 20 years dave, one thing about you is like myself you do look after your radios. Looks nice, But like you say that beep will have to go!

Hi Dave I saw an advert saying it has the same noise reduction as the 7900turbo but the radio doesn’t seem to have that?

It has the reduction, it seems not the same additional PCB as the 7900 Turbo (I'm getting one of those next I hope).

The more I read and watch videos about this new radio the more disappointed I feel about it. It looks great and nostalgic looking as the original however this day and age is that what we want. I'm totally confused 😂 I'm no expert but it feels like a step backwards, no frequency counter socket infact no built in frequency counter which I think should come as standard these days, no one wants to look at a frequency chart now. I guess it depends what you want, a old school looking radio like the original but with improved inners or should it have had the frequency counter built in it's a hard one this.

Hello Charlie Oscar, fix?, the S meter works fine IMO, I guess you mean the slowness of swing on TX?......if so I've not heard anything, it doesn't really bother me TBH
