Where do I start ? Well for me as a spotty teenager around 1980, and first attending the old ilford town Hall on a monday night and watching and listening in amazement to Dj froggy . That opened another world to me, then we went to the goldmine in canvey island, and another Dj chris hill on another level all together, again took us into another world yet again. So many wonderful memories other people have shared and all perfectly true. It's 2024 I am now 62 I still collect vinyl records of jazz - soul - funk - and jazz funk this music will never grow old or die , may we keep these memories and times alive, thank you Chris hill and froggy ( aka - Steve howlett ) and many more djs who felt the way we did and embodied the scene with timeless music - thank you all ❤️ xx

We started exactly this kind of music night in Bristol last year. We get sold out on our monthly gig playing that jam, from 77 /84.. Folks still love nostalgia

It was the love of the music and dancing then brought people from all walks of life together. No one cared about your race, religion, color or class we all joined the funk family and loved every minute of it. Chris Hill was incredible on the decks and introducing US imported to the punters. I saw his at Purley when he played 10% by double exposure and blew the roof of the place. Happy days indeed

All working off of Froggys sound system & the man only gets mentioned once, enjoyed the program, but come on, Froggy was a legend, at least they could have mentioned the sound system, the mixing etc

I had Chris at Rosie O Grady's in Gt Yarmouth in the eighties, he would only do the gig if we hired Froggy's sound system, Jesus, he nearly blew the roof off the place, amazing DJ and really nice guy, good times..!!

This Music scene was a big part of my life and this is a very important documentary, as it acknowledges an underground music scene that could easily go under the radar being overshadowed by mainstream music. What it doesn't highlight however is its countrywide popularity and the specialist clubs that played this music all over the U.K. My regular go to club was Stage 3 on the Isle of Sheppy. It was packed with over 1000 punters every Saturday night with people travelling from all over the country to attend.and many would be turned away as it was always full. Guest DJs such as Hilly, Robbie V and Steve Walsh were regularly booked along with bands from the scene such as Light of the World and even an early Level 42. Sadly this is now demolished and is a Car Park. I must also add that the choice of Music accompanying this documentary is a little misleading though, as most of the tracks chosen were already or went on to become commercial hits, when in reality probably 99% of the music played in the clubs and weekenders didn't. It was very much an underground music scene and the vast majority of people outside of this scene would never have heard of most of the music that was played.

Greg only mentions two tribes. He got one wrong, it's not 'the watford wobblers' it's 'the watford wallies'. I should know, I was a watford wally. I was thrilled that he remembered us even though he got the name wrong. Thanks for sharing, that brought back some very happy memories. I reminisce!

I love this channel really takes me back to when the music scene was creative. However not being funny or hating on the guy but anything with Pete tong just makes me suspect to it! People like that from out of no where suddenly becoming authorities on every type of dance music out there! I’m not buying that a middle class kid from the Suburbs was at these places raving and seeing what was going on first hand! Sorry I’ve never trusted these BBC-Pete tong documentaries and never will. The middle classes should never be telling the stories and exploits of the working classes who were not only working hard and struggling hard but playing hard without whom there would not be a scene for us to reminisce about today!

Pete Tongue was one of the instigators of the Jazz Funk and Soul Scene. This was his roots He was there at the beginning and a big name around Kent in particular.with a big following.
