As a "Metal Head", SUPERTRAMP are my guilty pleasure. Steely Dan also falls into that category. Their sound is so hypnotic, calming, groovy at same time. 🤫🫢🤘😎🇺🇸
Always impressed by Roger's ability to play those sixteenth-note chords on electric piano so fast for so long. I've been playing keyboards for more than 50 years and that sh*t is HARD. Even noticeably accelerates just around the start of the lyrics. Rick's piano solo is just fantastic. Btw, don't sweat 'unique' - it does literally mean 'there is no other'
People don’t realize how difficult it is to do something repetitively perfectly and for a long time. I’m reminded of Leland Sklar’s bass part in Billy Cobham’s Spectrum. Same deal .
The studio version is a masterpiece and very underrated in my opinion The lead vocalist which is on the electric piano plays also guitar in other tracks (it’s Roger Hodgson), the piano player (and lead singer on many tracks) is Rick Davies and can play harmonica, the saxophone player can play keyboards and he’s John Helliwell, the bassist is Dougie Thompson and the drummer is Bob Siebenberg Amazing band
In addition, John also plays the clarinet on many songs including "School" and "Breakfast In America". As for Roger who is singing on this song, he is playing a Wurlitzer electric piano which he also plays on "Breakfast In America" and "Dreamer". He also plays a 12 string guitar on "Give A Little Bit" and lead guitar on "Rudy", "School", "Crime Of The Century" and "Bloody Well Right" in reference to the songs you have reacted to so far.
@@donnakubiski5572 don't forget the outro solo on Goodbye Stranger and him using the wah wah pedal affect. Just Another Nervous Wreck has a great guitar part as well.
Many people say that Zeppelin is the best band ever. They’re my personal favorite, along with Pink Floyd. BUT, when you get into true progressive rock, most of the members were classically trained and the skills of these guys is stellar. I’ve never seen them play live before and this was an eye-opener for me. All I can say is WOW.
Honestly guys, this band is amazing. I had the privilege of seeing them twice and they can’t be beat. That live version you just listened to was very poorly recorded. When I saw them, both times, in two different places, the sound was fantastic. It was like sitting down in front of a 5000 watt analog stereo system and you could near every note. The first time I saw them for Crime of the Century……the soundboard was mixed by the guy who mixed the studio album. PLUS…..the light show was amazing. It was breathtaking. At the end of the night you realized you had just seen something extremely special.
@@randyharbaugh7819 …….agree 100%. The first time I saw them, it was their first performance in Canada and besides the light show, the projectors and the amazing sound, they had a whole acting troop who dressed in costumes and acted out characters from their songs. It was incredible.
Sat up all night with these guys during the recordings of Breakfast in America, throwing crash and ride cymbals around the room. Roger was convinced there was a way to get another sound out of those "silly metal things"
My absolute favorite ST song. It has everything -- the driving Wurlitzer, the dialogue between Rick and Roger, a killer piano solo, saxophone, Roger's thoughtful lyrics, great beats, great change-ups ... mad powerful.
In the studio version of this song Rick Davies mastery in his grand piano piece is literally unparalleled to the point that even Rick himself has never repeated it. You can listen to the piece over and over and like a heavenly sound you never get tired of it. Too bad that he suffers severe health issues preventing him from performing.
Child of vision the studio album version is by far the best song Supertramp ever did. I bought Breakfast in America in 1979 and directly knew that child of vision was my favourite and still is !
Never saw Supertramp in concert, however I did go to a Roger Hodgeson concert at a casino here near Seattle. Played many Supertramp hits and still sounded great. Hope he tours again.
When you started this journey, had you ever even heard of Supertramp? Let alone realize you would fall in love with them? Talent (and music lessons) go a long way in life
Imagine trying to get a band like this together to jam in the early days. Four keyboardists loading up all those the keys and amps onto the city bus, all on their way to their drummer's parent's basement. I thought loading a guitar and amp into the back of a car was a hassle. Edit: Lol plus all their guitars, saxophones, tubas, and harps. That's commitment.
Another stellar Supertramp reaction gentlemen! I hope you finish the Crime of the Century album and then move to Crisis What Crisis album. Thanks for hopping on the Supertramp train.
I love child of vision. Supertramp were known as a supergroup, which basically meant a list of bands who could fill a stadium anywhere in the world. Along with bands like led zeppelin, the who, dire straits, queen and the rolling stone and genesis. All English and all rock giants. Try supertramps "goodbye stranger "or "gone Hollywood " . And you must listen to ...Cream, try " white room "or" badge "first. Now they really are FIRE🔥👍🇬🇧
Super stoked you did Child of Vision, thank you. I’d echo the comments of others - the studio version is an absolutely must. A perfect ending to the brilliant Breakfast In America album itself, but also a stand alone song in its own right. The piano solo alone is class-A, D for dope.
I've seen "The Tramp" Live 4 times. There is always 5 Keyboard locations. Rick plays Grand piano/keys, Roger plays Guitar/keys, John plays Sax/Keys-String keys, Dougie on Bass Guitar and Bob is spectacular on Drums.
I love watching your reactions guys. This is one of my favorites. I got to see Supertramp in Seattle 1979. It was the best thing I've ever seen or heard. There's nothing like having two piano/keyboard parts being played together. Roger plays that keyboard superbly and Rick is a piano God. And yes Roger plays piano/keyboards & guitar and John plays multiple, wind (Clarinet, Tenor & Alto sax etc.) instruments and keyboard. They are amazing.
I saw a lot of bands in my teens and twenties, I saw Supertramp live in London in 1987 and without a doubt they had the best live sound of any band I saw. So tight as a group of musicians. And love the reactions BTW
Please do some of the studio versions of the songs you already listened to again. But then from this Paris live show. You will even love them more.....:)
“I’m tripping!” Love your reaction to this great band and awesome song. They are top tier musicians. I now regret not seeing them live when I was much younger when they were in their prime. My guess is that they still sound incredible.
You guys just love the Tramp.................another great reaction. It shows how studio tracking has to be solved for 'live' shows- and how they are such versatile talented guys. Time for Babaji or the beast that is Fool's Overture!
Thank you for this one guys. Supertramp is an elite band on stage. I've seen them three times on stage and have multiple concert DVDs including this one, Live in Paris. Roger Hodgson is lead vocalist on this song. Roger and Rick take turns with lead vocals. There is another live performance of the song, Another Man's Woman, on Live in Paris. There is an awesome piano solo in this one by Rick. The build up makes it so. Rick Davies is lead vocalist too. That's the guy that started out on an organ, switched to tambourine and finished with piano. Roger plays guitar on this one. John Helliwell is the MC and is the guy that runs around playing different instruments. He plays the wind instruments. Dougie Thompson plays bass although I've seen him play organ like the beginning of School. Bob Siebenburg plays drums. He often holds his drumsticks by the ends that are supposed to hit the drums. There is one song on Crime of the century that I hope you guys will give a chance. Rick is full of emotion and desperation on the song, Asylum.
I was a little disappointed that you guys went with the live version of this , because the studio version has a million more sounds and a million more instruments it's a masterpiece ! You will be blown away even more so !
For sure the studio version has a wicked piano solo. It goes on and on, but never gets tiring. I could listen to this song on repeat for hours. I know because I have.
The comment I was going to write. But, going down the line, it's the first one I find. So I see I'm not the only one who thinks this. Yes, for me, the live version is too fast, and the chorus is unexpectedly a little sloppy due to the speed of execution.
Supertramp was one of the best concerts I have ever seen. 💯An overabundance of musical talent! You guys need to check out more Dave Matthews Band's live stuff. They always own the stage too as a band, like ST does, so if you wanna see a BAND get on stage and just cook, live videos of Dave Matthews Band (there are a lot!) should be on the reactions list for sho'!....Two Step, Crush, Drive In Drive Out, Cornbread, and a lot more...those are monsters when performed live.
Dudes, they all play different instruments depending on the song! John Helliwell plays all wind instruments and even keyboard and is kind of the “MC” and goof-off guy. Roger Hodgson also plays harmonica but they all do. These guys are all TOP MUSICIANS and song writers
Roger plays guitar, piano, flute, Sitar as well as harmonica. And he also wrote most of the songs that were hits. These guys were all great musicians. Find "Another Man's Woman" (Live) to really see Roger on Guitar.
Loved your reaction to School as that’s an amazing song. Child’s vision is how you end an album… what a song! Hope you check out “even in the quietest moments” and live “Fool’s overture”.
Hey guys, back in the day, a lot of us never seen the bands unless in concert. There were always 3-4 audiophiles around with their shelves of albums, couple of turn tables , 4-6 large tower speakers, recliner, cooler of wobbly pops, full pipe, and a few close people sitting around. But I don’t remember any of us analyzing the music like is done today. It was listen to this, while tripping on that, drinking this and yeah I like that. Next song?
“Saw” them in 1979 at McMahon Stadium in Calgary in 1979 when I was 19. We actually sat outside on a grassy knoll at one of the end zones and heard the concert for free as it was sold out. There was a beer strike at the time so we had a $4 gallon of Donini wine! The good stuff! 😂 Good times! Great show. Chris De Burgh (Lady in Red guy) opened for them.
Funny story! I was working for a publishing company and had burned a CD to send to the printing company. Boxed it up for Fed Ex and sent it to the mailroom. Back at my desk I began to finish listening to my Supertramp CD of Breakfast in America when I realized that I sent the Supertramp CD to the printer by mistake! Luckily I made it to the building where the mailroom was located and was able to swap it out before it went to FedEx. Wonder what the printer would have thought when he would have opened the box and found a Supertramp disc! I was on good terms with the guy so I'm sure he would have had a good laugh!
just to through it out there, these guys played it off sooo well between each other, so sad they broke u;p, please settle your differance. and come together again, your fans love you
