I think it's just that progressive rock is a narrow field not for everyone, too complex. Supertramp sure has its hardcore fan group and has sold in the range of 75 million albums. Their records have been on rotation in my place for forty years.
Yeah this was actually the first hit song I ever heard about these guys. But when I went out and bought the album I would play it all the way from beginning to end because it was so good. Peace guys
Supertramp was a great band with so many great songs. To those of us that were there we just considered them a rock band. I never heard these bands labeled progressive until a couple years ago. We just considered them rock bands. Some favorites: Crime of the Century, Give a Little Bit, Rudy and From Now On but many more. BTW the album on your display is one of the greatest records ever. RIP Marvin..
If you guys do a full album reaction then this should be it. Hide in Your Shell is buried amongst these other great songs and is rarely reacted to. I think it is easily one of the best songs ever written by anyone, not just Supertramp. This album still gets regular play almost 50 years later, masterpiece.
Lead vocals on "Dreamer" are handled by Roger Hodgson; their lead guitarist. The other lead vocalist is Rick Davies. He sings lead on two songs I think you will both enjoy. "Goodbye Stranger" and "Rudy" are treats musically!
Trudat! That "video game sound" that Che picked up on definitely, LITERALLY coems in at the end of Logical. Can't recall the game, but I remember playing it on a handheld device in like sixth grade when the song hit, lol.
Love, love, love that you guys are getting into Supertramp. They are an amazing band that I had the fortune to see live 16 times. I hope you do School or Hide In Your Shell next from the Crime of the Century album. They have basically two lead singers, Rick and Roger with Roger singing on most of their big hits. I appreciate their deep cuts more than most of the hits but you can't go wrong with any Supertramp.
I'll say it again, guys, you really need to dip into "Even In The Quietest Moments". "Breakfast in America"outsold it, but for my money that's their best album, strongest melodically. *Such* a good band!
The Logical Song is also amazing. Breakfast in America is a great album, as well as others. Supertramp is worth a deep dive. Rodger Hodgeson still performs.
Goodbye Stranger is my favorite, but lyrically please also react to the “Logical song”. I think you’ll enjoy both. Supertramp is an amazing band with many hits and the songs are different because they had two totally different writers. Also these albums had top tier producers. Also there is a great 1978 concert in Paris if you want to see live. Goodbye Stranger from that concert is amazing.
I consider Supertramp's early albums to be somewhat progressive but their later albums were more pop and commercial and earned them a lot of well-deserved income. Crime of the Century is a fantastic album and I spent a lot of times rolling on the floor with headphones on when this came out.
Supertramp sort of perfectly bridged the gap between pop and progressive rock. Progressive pop! And as good as this studio track is, it's even better live. They put out a double album live set called Paris - I'd recommend checking out that version of this song, too.
I was trying to come up with how to describe what I think their sound is and I see you have done it perfectly- between pop and progressive rock….progressive pop! And yes they are good live I saw them couple times in the eighties.
Yeah dudes I am so glad you had a good time with Supertramp because there is a lot more. Especially, for me, "School" and Take the Long Way Home" are incredible songs that you will also love. Thanks for the great channel. Ya'll are the best ones.
Shame, but not a surprise. TRARHOF is about as bad a joke as you could imagine. As Eddie Trunk once pointed out, for a while Madonna was in it but Deep Purple wasn't...
Excellent review, as always.. Saw them live at Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo just after Crime of the Century came out.Powerful sound. You still haven't gotten to my to personal favorites, School and Rudy. You will truly enjoy..
Wait till you hear "Rudy" from this album. A masterpiece of composition, musicianship, storytelling, and production. The seamless mixture of various musical instruments and styles in one track is amazing. Thanks guys. I enjoy your reactions.
Supertramp are a fantastically talented group. All their tracks are pure gold. They are just as good live, they don’t miss a trick. A very underrated British group!
Supertramp are a kind of soft progressive pop band. School from this album is one of my favourite songs of theirs. Although quite short, it has the same progressive element that you picked up here.
This one is poppy progressive I'd say. Bloody catchy. I recall being instantly impressed on first hearing it, even on AM radio. (If I could see something.....) Very talented group. I still really like this.
Crime of the Century featured some very innovative percussion sounds. Used to listen to this album almost daily back in Junior High School. And yes. The whole album is awesome.
Ha! Great to see u guys bangin’ with Supertramp. They’re progressive pop. ST, back in the mid to late 70’s @PSU, was one of main musical food groups! Crime of the Century, Breakfast in America and Even in the Quietest Moments are among my fave albums of all time! If you blended Floyd & one of the pop greats, like Elton… you get Supertramp!
First discovered *Supertramp* unintentionally. Expecting *Ted Nugent* in a 10,000 seat concert arena, but I was *one of only twelve* that bought tickets to their *"Even In the Quietest Moments"* tour. Most professional band - performed full setlist, plus encored us with unreleased songs from *"Breakfast in America"* album. Live Concert or Studio Recording - sound quality equally the same, very rare!
So good to see you reacting to all these great band that I grew up with in the 70's and 80's. And Supertramp was one of them. Of course I bought this album and it's great. You'll never get tired of these great songs. And it is great to watch again with someone that have not heard them before. It's just like presenting them for a good friend when the album came out.
Supertramp existed on the fringes of progressive rock in their early years. Discarding their 1st 2 albums, their next 3 - Crime of the Century, Crisis? What Crisis? and Even in the Quietest Moments are staples for FM classic rock. Growing up in Montreal, one of the first places to embrace them after the release of Crime of the Century, they are rock royalty here. Breakfast in America may be their most commercially successful album, but it was also somewhat of a departure from their earlier work in an attempt to break into the American market. Not to put down that album or the few that followed, but, it is a different vibe and certainly a different band following the departure of Roger Hodgson. In my opinion, Crime of the Century is in the conversation for greatest rock albums of all time.
Lord luvs ducks you guys. Momma gonna tell you😂Supertramp Crime of the Century!!! This is only one cut from one of the most iconic albums of all time. Every single flippin song is just timeless. My Garden luvs is cranked.😂😂 Please boys grace your ears to this masterpiece. The next song is Rudy...ohhh see how the cuts flow its magical. Cheers
Seeing Supertramp live is such fun! 😊 I hafta tell you, I bought a tank t-shirt at one of their shows that simply said "Supertramp" on the 1 pocket -- I would get the strangest looks from the people that didn't know it was a rock band!! So freakin funny!! 🤣🤣🤣
So many good Supertramp songs to explore. One of their lesser known hits worth hitting is “Sister Moonshine,” probably the only rock song you will hear with a piccolo solo. There has been a long debate whether they should be labeled “prog” or not. I don’t think they are, though they have elements of prog, and many prog fans like them. Impeccable musicianship, writing, and production.
I remember the first time I heard this. Just about to leave the house as a teenager it came on the radio. It stopped me in my tracks and I turned around and listened to the whole thing. I bought it that day. The B side was a good too. Made me head into old Jazz because I loved the sound of it, in the way Led Zeppelin had me getting into old Blues because I loved that too. Love the appreciation of the old tunes I came up with. Musical soundscapes have always been a joy to explore. Be well guys, and have fun.
Hello, Supertramp are an amazing band ,I think you are correct they are progresive, at least i have always thoght so . also the production on tracks like... Rudy, Crime of the century, Cannonball, Asylum. i could go on. a very special band i am so glad you have discovered them . all my best to you and yours from Liverpool
I have said this before but it bears repeating..... The 1970s AM and FM radio airwaves were FULL...so full of amazing music! Mainstream radio spoiled us! We could hardly change the channel without finding a GREAT song! His vocals starting at about 3:15 are so expressive, so emotionally beautiful. I can't get enough of that
There was so much good music back then. I nearly forgot about this song. Now, I remember hearing it often. I think my friend bought this album, turned me on, and then I got Breakfast in America. Alas, my vinyl is collecting dust in the closet anymore. Thanks for the reaction.
Remember buying "Crime of The Century" as a 16 year ild in 75 and after playing it for the first time rushing round to my best friends house telling him he just had to hear this.
@@AirplayBeats yeah you'll notice that Supertramp builds in some empty spaces in their music. Like sometimes the base will disappear for a couple of stanzas or the drums aren't there for half the song or something but it's the absence that makes it sound so much better when it does come in. If you know what I mean. I love this band and always have. Thanks a bunch guys peace!
