You have retained your wondrous core, which is one reason why your show is such a continual delight. Never lose the magic. Many will. Don't be one of the many. As Oscar Wilde said: Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.
My favorite Supertramp song!😊 I'm almost 70, and trying to figure out how my dreams were changed, who crushed them, how I allowed it,succumbed to it, etc. Can't chg the past, but maybe my remaining yrs will improve. ❤
Right on Shawn! You totally get this deep song. I never appreciated this song when it was released back in the day. I guess I was to young to understand the lyrics the way I do now. I love the message in the lyrics and the song is so clever and outstanding. The sax was amazing in this song. 🎷❤️ great reaction. Thanks.
I was in HS when this GEM dropped. Needless to say it blew up everywhere, and hit all of us right between the eyes, with provocative lyrics that held nothing back, melded with an impeccable musical arrangement. Definitely a Masterpiece.
I’ve been a huge Supertramp fan for decades. Roger Hodgson lives in a small town about 50 miles from me. He did a concert there many years ago in a very small venue, along with John Heliwell, the sax player in this song and other musicians, including his son on drums. It was a night to remember. I’ve always loved Roger’s music for the spiritual quality his lyrics convey. He’s extremely prolific, and most of his lyrics run deep.
My favorite song of theirs is 'Even in the Quietest Moments' from the album of the same name. Logical Song and School round out the top three. "Even' is so soulful and mellow, you might want to try that one.
My girlfriend at the time introduced me to the music of Supertramp, as well as the Average White Band - check out Supertramp's BLOODY WELL RIGHT from their album Crime of the Century (1974), and AWB's PICK UP THE PIECES from AWB (1974). I was already a 'Dan Fan and ELO came along a bit later for me, like '76.
the deep meaning of the song aside, whenever i hear the sound of the mattel hand held football game (right after he says d-d-d-d-d-d-d-digital) it takes me right back to my 1979 u.s. history class. a couple of guys had this new toy in the back of the room, and when the teacher heard the sound of it he took it away from them. a great memory from my senior year in high school.
At British boarding schools, children could board weekly (go home for the weekends), or only go home at term break (in a 3-term academic year) or at the end of each school year (presumably they’d also go home for Christmas holidays). For his 5 high school years, Hodgson went to the very fancy Stowe School in Buckinghamshire, where tuition currently is up to £38K per term! The school itself is housed in what was the country house of the Duke of Buckingham
Love this song! The lyrics remind me of a line in a Jimi Hendrix song (If 6 Was 9) as well as David Crosby's (Almost Cut My Hair) - Let your freak flag fly! I'm still doing that at 70 & life is good.
Oh man Shawn, you are bringing some fantastic tunes today! Got some SRV & now Supertramp!! 😎🤘 -Right after my brother bought this, we dropped it in the cassette deck in his 69 Roadrunner, dropped the top & I was simply floored by this entire album. Saved up my Pennie’s & got my own copy a few weeks later. I cruised Friday/Saturday nights on the strip playing the heck outta this in my 72 Barracuda…still have the cassette (dang wish I had the car!😊). One of the best albums front to back ever; “Take the Long Way Home” & “Lord is it Mine” hold special places in my heart. The lyrics here are just so meaningful, & I think transition to today’s world. Keep em coming, we appreciate it.
I was 10 years old when this song/album came out. My brother got the LP. We went on a family trip in Canada that summer - you heard it played everywhere. As I got older, I identified with the lyrics. This is one of my very favorite personal songs.
I was this boy when this came out. I had hundreds of miles of this on my car CASSETTE. NAS-T tenor sax. "Breakfast in America". ALL of it. Sadly, today our "education system" turns our young into vegetables.😨
In a boarding school, parents can come on weekends and take you out for a meal or the day, sports days and festivals. Children are not at home until, shool holidays, if the parents let you come home. You may be looked after by the estate staff, or a nanny, while the parents are off at a house party or elsewhere. They can write letters, or talk on the phone, but the present connection berween parent and child is not there, the emotional, loving daily reationship is not there. If you really need a hug, your mum is miles away. Older boys and bullies have free rein, to make your life hell. This system has been turning out emotionally deprived and thus stunted, immature individuals, for centuries. There are nurses, and counsellors, and teachers that may be well liked. Just no parents.
Teaching children to be sensible, logical, responsible, and practical is a good thing. When these things are taught and practiced you have order and you don't have to tolerate people shitting on the sidewalks who never learned any of those messages. Who you are isn't nearly as important as realizing you are a member of a team and the health and well being of the team is much more important than you. Save your "Please tell me who I am" conversation for your therapist.
