There are so many exciting and new things that I love to get myself into. Drawing is one that I have stayed with for many years and have loved every minute of it!

Hi, Tyler. I found a way around all those broken graphite pencils, I use Lead Holders, and clutch/ mechanical pencils. Lead holders are awesome because your pencil never changes, you just put in new leads, and they have a complete range of graphite, all the HB's and even the harder F's. I love art and I believe that everybody brings something new to the table. Some people starting out should use printer paper because no one is afraid to mess up on a sheet of printer paper. I would only recommend its use for preliminary sketches. I also look putty rubbers/ Kneadable Putty Erasers. Peace and thank you for all your videos and the work you put into them. Peace.

The clay tools are really cool. I used to work at an art store so I was constantly getting ideas from co workers and customers on new things to try and do. It was fun. Thanks for sharing!

I like using mechanical pencils, and I think I've bought something like eight models over the years. It all comes down to personal preference. I don't use anything now except Pentel pencils, Primarily the classic P200 pencils, and now the Graph Gear 1000 pencils. I've completely ditched using the window that tells you what grade of lead is in the pencil. After using them for a time, I just quit. I found they just aren't necessary for me, and they were much more of a bother than a help. I have a set of pencils that goes from 9H to 14B. I don't use most of them, so I replace many with more HB, 2B and 4B which I use most often. But I do occasional use much softer pencils. I just don't use them with pressure. Layering and light blending does the trick. For small areas of very black, I use a Prismacolor black pencil. Sometimes I even use ink. Both of these give an intense, deep black that I can't get any other way. As for your writing box, I love it. I have a box, too, The inside compartment on mind measures a hair over twelve inches long, five and a half inches wide, and three inches deep. My wife's grandfather made it during the great depression. I also have a small knife he made from a broken pocketknife. It sharpened pencils perfectly. Times were tough, so people made what they needed. He made this box to hold small tools, screws, etc. He was a carpenter, so the box is very well made. It's perfeect as an office drawing box. As for paper, that's my specialty and I wouldn't say good sketchbooks have anything like printer paper in them. The composition is completely different. Though I've fund that some type of printer paper work exceptionally well as drawing paper. There are not onlt different weights of printer paper, there are also many, many different types of paper. You can get it in every shade, every type of tooth, made from everything from linen to cotton to bamboo, to wood pulp. It's only the cheap wood pulp paer that is bad for pretty much everything except running through a printer. Really, there are printer papers every bit as good, or better, than most drawing paper. I spent time working in a paper mill, and we made several types of paper aside from wood pulp. Some of the printer paper we made was fantastic, but very few artists even look at paper designed to be used in a printer. I think this is a big mistake. Paper is about as personal choice as anything is. I like shaded paper, I like paper with some tooth, but I love bright white, extremely smooth paper, as well. I believe paper selection should be based on what you're drawing. My two favorite papers for drawing are Strathmore Bristol Smooth, and Strathmore Bristol vellum. Waterford also makes wonderful paper. But I stick to Strathmore for most things. But I use a LOT of sketchbooks, and a lot of higher end printer paper, some of which is fantastic. I just don't see the need to worry about it for sketching. Sketching paper is just that. It's made for sketching, not for detailed, final drawings. It seems that 100gsm is about the standard for sketching paper, and I think this is more than good enough. Especially for beginners, but also for professionals. I guess it depends on how you define "sketching" and "drawing". I say go by what it says on the cover of the book. If it says sketching paper, then use it for sketching. If you want to actually draw, get something better. Really, I go through sketchbooks so fast that it seems they just vanish. I couldn't begin to afford this much high quality drawing paper. Neither can most beginners. But it really is about income level, personal choice, and using whatever it is you like. I was given several reams of HP Premium 32lb LaserJet paper about four years ago. It's as smooth as glass, but I love sketching AND drawing on it. Glassy smooth paper just takes a bit different technique than paper with tooth, but for some types of drawing I find it's better because of the smoothness. I also have three reams of one hundred percent cotton "parchment" printer paper that is fantastic for drawing. Linen is also an interesting drawing experience. Just use whatever you like.

Hey David! I always get a kick out of how large of an audience I can reach with my videos. I am glad that you found my channel and that you enjoy my work. It makes me happy and gives me a purpose here. Oil pastels will always be one of my favorite mediums but I have been sticking with the pencil tutorials because it gets a better reaction than the tutorials done with color. It is easier for everyone to follow since they don't really need to purchase anything. Thanks for posting!!!

That is really up for you to decide. I have my preferences that I have developed over the years of trying out many different brands of pencils. Brands like Derwent, Faber Castell, and Staedtler are just a few of the good brands that exist among about a dozen more. Pencils differ slightly in performance from brand to brand but not to the amount that would warrant obtaining one brand over another. See if you have anything local to you where you can easily obtain some supplies and see what you like

Hey there. I have been drawing mountains for quite some time so when I draw them, I usually just do them from my imagination. Every now and then I use a photo reference to help me with the details. I always recomend that others use a reference. It is always a good idea to see what is going on in the picture that way you can kind of see how to draw it.

Rose, if you mean cost, I put together a list on the Blick site which includes box, pencils, blenders, erasers, sharpener, and the large drawing book. With shipping included, it came to less than $50. You could even trim it a bit more than that; but, I added a couple of personal preferences: eraser pen refills, and a cleaning pad. (The latter I learned to appreciate from time spent as a manual draftsman, years ago.) Cheaper than dinner for two and greater long-term enjoyment. :) Good luck! Jim

I have seen that video by mark and I agree with him to an extent and he mentioned this as well. When it comes to pencils, there really aren't any bad pencil brands. They are all cheap so I go with just go with what I am used to. When you start getting into paint, there is a HUGE difference between the craft grade and the high quality grade. But that difference may not be enough to some to warrant buying better materials.Everyone makes the best from what they have. Quality can help but not always

Yep. It allows you to produce those really dark darks that you need for the drawing. The glare can really take over the drawing and can even look like a highlight because of how bright that glare can get.

@Slawek Wozniak, I use a prismacolor kneaded eraser. If its sticky, possibly try soaking it in water for about 30-50 seconds, then dry it really well, by squeezing, it in between a towel for 1-2 minutes.

I bought most of mine in store. I have a Blick Art Materials local where I get most of them. You can always get them from their website as well. There is also Jerrys Artarama I think. There are a few but those are the 2 that I usually end up getting stuff from. I have both those stores ear me. But pencil supplies can also be found at craft stores like Micheal's and AC Moore. They won't have anywhere as large as a selection and tend to cost more.

You can use whatever materials that you like. These are just the supplies that I have gotten used to using over the years. I have always found it difficult to just use a single pencil for an entire drawing. You have to be pretty good at varying the pressure on the pencil to get different tone out of it. The main thing is that you want contrast within a drawing to tell between one object and another. It also helps with giving the drawing a mood, or overall impression. Using multiple pencils helps
