A video in response and supporting John Darko's (‪@DarkoAudio‬ ) "AUDIOPHILES ARE SNOBS (with money to burn)" video. --- • "AUDIOPHILES ARE SNOBS...
Spoiler: I totally agree.
My take on the subject and why the arrogant behaviour he talks about, in a way helped form what I do with maudifi. I try to make high-end audio more accessible.

I try to make HiFi fun and put in humour and I kinda like the idea, supporting your commentary, that some snob somewhere will be thinking you can’t have fun whilst reviewing serious HiFi. But that’s the point it’s not or shouldn’t be serious. HiFi is the entertainment business and the more it sets to play to that, the more successful it will be with an existing and new audience.

I'm 47, I've been apart of many hobbies throughout my life and I look forward to many more. With that said the hifi audiophile community is by far the most toxic, arrogant, and egotistical group of ppl I have ever been involved w/ in a hobby. I acknowledge not all are this way in this hobby, John Darko imo has a great attituded and just likes sharing his experiences to help others. Amir from ASR on the other hand acts like this HiFi Overlord and he loves to go after audiophiles just to attempt to prove them wrong and sometimes he does and sometimes he can't because a lot of this hobby is subjective. I think that is what gets lost to some audiophiles is that a lot but not all aspects of this hobby are subjective. In short a lot of audiophiles will simply not allow you to have your own opinion.

Thanks for sharing. I like John's openness and I agree that audio is mostly a subjective hobby. IMHO measurements only take you so far and a lot of the fun is in tinkering to make things better :-).

@@crazyprayingmantis5596 : Would it not be fun to present to a number of tunes. Some heave on base, some on highs, some on drums, some on rhythm, etc. Then have them write a simple review of what they listen for. The answers, I hope, would be as varied as the number of listeners. I, for one, look for ticks/patterns such as the base guitar's notes he plays. Music is subjective to the listener. I guess I will use the term 'relative.' We don't need snobs, just people who love music.

Dear Mr. Maudify, I've been into music (both as a listener and as a player) and into hifi equipment for a long long time and I do really appreciate your straight forward and, at the sime time, humble approach to this fascinating world. Thank you very much for your balanced tone, your realistic and technical approach. I encourage you to move on with your hifi channel and wish you all the best. Greetings from Madrid! PS - Btw, I do agree John Darko's take on this too ;--)

Hi Jose, thank you for taking the time to comment. Your feedback and encouragement is appreciated. Maudifi is a work in progress and I'm finding my way on RU-vid. There is more content on the way. Perhaps not as quickly as I'd like, but it'll happen :-). PS/ it's been a few years since I last visited Madrid, but I have happy memories of the city.

I'm also 47 and in the late 80's/90's spent most of my time going to Acid House Parties etc. I then started DJing and went through no end of equipment, mainly Amps, Speakers etc Technics 1210 decks remained consistent to this day. As I progressed it moved into PA rigs. Loud soundsystems like Martin f1 and Funktion One, Void etc. Was in plenty of studios, studio gear etc all pro gear. Now Im in my later 40's and moving into better Hi-Fi equipment ( even though Ive always had hifi equipment and AV equipment) I cant believe how snobbish and condescending Audiophiles can be. Forums, Social media, websites are full of it and its horrible, You dont get this in other sectors. I also hate the word Audiophile, I love Music, have done since a young boy. I will continue to by better Audio equipment as I get older but will never get like that or even understand the snobbery. Some of the forums seem like Grammar exercises or creative writing nonsense just to belittle other people. No wonder Younger Folk are put off by it.

I do think buying the music is more important than spending thousands. I do believe there is a case for saying there’s dimensioning returns on how much you spend on gear.
@maudifi
@maudifi Год назад
Thanks for your comment Shaun. I agree, music is the important thing and I guess my quest is to hear it played better and better. There are diminishing returns, but I don't think it's as steep a slope as most would have us believe. I've found the further you get into it, the further away those diminishing returns are too. The key thing is keeping within a budget that is comfortable for yourself. You don't have to spend thousands and thousands to get a well performing system. This is something that I hope to show in my videos. Good set-up and effective internal modifications really help with that.

I am an EE with some 50 years experience in Audio Design of call it "high-end" equipment. I sold my profession by contracting to other high-end manufacturers for some reasons that were not totally clear from the outset. Company XYZ would task you to create their new line future release of amplifiers, Obviously the president and technical officer spent much time with me, and we defined ti base specification and user retirement. We would then touch on aesthetics, amp layout, base manufacturing cost and thereafter a well-defined future product. If all this went well we would have established the bare-bones speciation desired by the company I would then proceed to draw as many different models of their product that I use as study material whereby I familiarize myself of what this companies sonic signature is, from in-depth listening to their equipment. I will capture all the different product into my schematic capture program and simulate it. Now on advantage of this analyser that is total software driven can actually play music and I could listen how the real part compares to that of the simulated part during AB testing, Secondly, I can start changing component values in software to ascertain was of the recreation actually contributes to their house sound. This was necessary to be able to retain the house sound throughout then range of the amps, you cannot just deign a better amp that perform way over those presented to you, the trend has to be maintained, Only once my data has all be collected, and I selected the best parts to support their house sound would I start my designing. Why I mention this to you is that I heard you drop a word that you are keen to establish your own high-end brand and just up my alley. Now, would you be interested in doing such a design exercise with me. If you are interested, drop me a what sup on 27 82 415 5002 and we take it from there

@maudifi Год назад
Interesting. Yes, I'm aware of the house sound trend and why manufacturers would want to maintain that. In some of those cases one could argue they hold themselves back too far, but they are now so well established they continue to sell product. I would argue savvy shoppers can get better for less cost though in some of those cases. I'll drop you a DM in a while.

Thanks for your perspective. Indeed there is SNOBBERY in this hobby. I have the same speakers as you, SF Venere 2.5. How much do you toe them in and how far are you sitting from them? I have adjusted the toe in on my pair, now have them the drivers pointing at my ears sitting 8 ft from them. If one toes them out does it open the soundstage?
@maudifi
@maudifi Год назад
Hi, mine are toed in about 10°. Probably about the same distance from seat as you, maybe just under at about 2 to 2.3m apart and to the seat. They are about 90 cm (~3ft) from front wall. Getting them further into the room really helped the soundstage. I did try them firing straight out, but it didn't really gel, so I toed them in. The soundstage is pretty wide and well defined. I'll probably experiment more in the future, different placement in the room, etc as I have a big window on one side, but happy for now. I think you just have to experiment until it works in your room.

Great video, thanks ! For me being audiophile has really nothing to do with money and the price of equipment but with the interest in best possible sound quality for a given gear / environment. In this sense even someone listening e.g. with a simple smartphone connected to basic BT-speakers is an audiophile if he’s (she's !) looking to find the best settings, speaker or listening position etc… to get optimal results. It’s an attitude, not a social position. I personally grew up on this way (even if in the 80’s we had rather cassette tape recorders than smartphones 😊) to currently end up with a pretty nice and reasonably priced (partially home-made) system, btw also based on an optimized DigiOne Signature player from Allo. Concerning tolerance : yes for sure in general we should always be tolerant with peoples different mind / way of thinking. Now myself I honestly struggle to be tolerant with intolerant people . Anyway, good continuation ! Stéphane

Merci beaucoup Stephane! Good to hear from you again. I agree. As you and I know one can achieve very good sound quality without spending a fortune. Ha, ha, I started with a mono cassette recorder too and I guess I was hooked from them. I have constantly been looking for ways to make whatever I had sound better. Yes, it is difficult to tolerate the intolerant. I try to avoid, if possible. 😊

In todays Hifi, Diminishing returns comes very early, nearly everything now is very good. Just for example, comparing a $300 and $800 pair of bookshelf speakers, there generally isn't that much difference.
@maudifi
@maudifi Год назад
When I started out, many moons ago, I believed in the diminishing returns argument, and I guess I still do. The thing is, I still find enough difference to keep trying different things and upgrading. I could be an audio fool, but the more I listen to better gear, the more layers I uncover. I agree, there are some great lower price pieces that can rival pricier gear. IMHO there's still a gap, but maybe that's been narrowed in budget to mid-price kit.
