The Supreme Court on Thursday blocked Purdue Pharma from going forward with bankruptcy proceedings, which the Biden administration has called an “unprecedented” arrangement that would ultimately offer the Sackler family broad protection from opioid-related civil claims.
In agreeing to pause the settlement, the court also said it would take up the case and hear arguments this December. CNN's Jean Casarez and Joan Biskupic report. #CNN #News

The sad part is the settlement was for around $6B to 60,000 people. It would have netted each person around $100K before lawyers and taxes. That is a lot of money that can be used to buy other drugs to keep them happy. Now they will have to wait another 20+ years and probably not see one dime. In the end, the lawyers win. The family can always file bankruptcy later if that helps preserve their wealth. That's justice for you.

Yes they should. Opiates have been known to be wildly, dangerously addictive for all of human civilization and nothing has ever contradicted that. A doctor has the least possible excuse for thinking otherwise because they would not only know that it is addictive, but the exact mechanisms through it causes addiction.

Opiod prescribers were told *repeatedly* that Purdue's painkiller was different, with a near-zero chance of addiction, because it was continuous release (the "Contin" in OxyContin).

If this would've made it so people in actual pain like people that have been in terrible accidents or elderly people in pain and need it for quality of life all of the sudden lose their meds then I actually agree with this. If it wouldn't have affected true pain patients then yeah they should pay.

So if I hire big lawyers and stall the case as much as possible, I can force the authorities to declare me without fault as long as I pay a fat bribe? It would also be smart to give some money to mouthpieces to go on talk shows and insist that the money is needed NOW and we should compromise at any cost.

Exactly. Haven't we compromised! Think of all the people how have serious pain management needs that no longer have access to anything that works for pain because of the crap these people did. The irresponsibly.willingly, and knowingly worked with doctors and pharmacies to create the crisis that has caused suffering to so many that have never had any addiction at all. Yet their rights are violated and they're forced to suffer in pain every day just to stop a problem their not even part of! Those are the people I feel for the most!
