Very rare clip of The Supremes performing "Can't Take my Eyes off of You" with Mary Wilson on lead. Diana Ross and Cindy Birdsong join Mary for a very unusual/special rendition of Love Child with special guests on stage!! The show aired on October 18, 1969

Nice, Mary. Thank you so much for carrying The Supremes the distance, for so many generations. Many of the true entertainers of the past, present and future owe the legend and quality of entertaining and professionalism to The Original Supremes and the women who followed. Yes, Mary, we salute and respect your vision in keeping the group alive. The Supremes, yesterday, today and tomorrow is and always will be the "greatest girl group", ever! We are forever, grateful! Love The Supremes!

I don't get why everyone always has to make this into some competition and be so nasty. I love the Supremes, all of the members (Diana, Flo, Mary, and yes Cindy) and they all deserve recognition. They all had something unique and interesting to contribute, and made the group something magical that will never be beat or replicated. It's such a shame that their legacy is tarnished by all this drama and BS and pitting the women against one another (of course Mary didn't help things; she had every right to tell her story, but still), when really it's their amazing music and performances that should be talked out and remembered.

.Mary didn't help things??????.............and Diane DID help things? Wasn't it Diane that tried to go out as THE SUPREMES in 2000 without Mary and Cindy? Wasn't it Diane who was disgraced in front of the entire world when The Return To Love Tour was cancelled and put out of its misery? Wasn't it Diane and Berry who masterminded the entire plan to put Diane waaaaaaaaaaay out front despite the fact that America loved all three Supremes?.....................and I could go on and on! Don't say that Mary didn't help things unless you are going to list Diane's sins as well................hers is a longer list! I agreed with your comment until you started to put the blame solely on Mary..
@AllenMQuinn
@AllenMQuinn 7 лет назад
kurtsupreme No, neither of them helped matters one bit. I meant to include Diana in that too. All of them contributed to it.
@kennethhamlett166
@kennethhamlett166 7 лет назад
Actually, the plan for the tour included Ms. Ross, Ms. Wilson and Ms. Birdsong;. But, Ms. Wilson demanded a huge amount of money to participate, and her request would have eliminated the chance for the tour to show a profit. So, the request was turned down, and she refused to take a lower amount and dropped out of the tour. Only then did the idea to include the other Supremes come under consideration. We did indeed love all three original Supremes and those who came later. But, it was Ms. Ross' sound that took the group to the top of the charts and kept them there for years and took her to top of the charts after she became a solo entertainer. She was the group's lead singer and certainly deserved her billing with the group. I always find it odd that those who say they resent Ms. Ross for being spotlighted do not dislike Smokey Robinson for transitioning the Miracles into Smokey Robinson & the Miracles or Martha Reeves because the Vandellas became first Martha & the Vandellas and then eventually Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. They do not condemn David and Jimmie Ruffin for leaving the Temptations for solo careers or Michael Jackson for leaving the Jackson Five for a solo career. Ms. Ross has always been held to a different standard than anyone else, and that seems terribly unfair. It has also always been acknowledged that Ms. Ross worked tirelessly to make the group successful and to maintain that success. Florence Ballard admitted in interviews that she hated everything related to the business except the singing. Ms. Wilson did more, but nothing in any way comparable to the efforts of Ms. Ross. Ms. Ballard also acknowledged that in the last months of her time as a Supreme, she failed to show up for appearances, showed up intoxicated, and that she sometimes sabotaged the choreography on numbers to confuse Ms. Ross and Ms. Wilson and make them look foolish to the audience. In the same interview, she said that though she did not realize it at the time, those actions were manifestations of her desire to leave the group and escape the nonstop work schedule and travel. Many would have felt as she did -- it is hard work to get to the top and remain there -- she wanted to lead a quieter life and stay at home. As for the accusations that people make that Mr. Gordy and others withdrew support for the group after Ms. Ross left for a solo career, the facts do not support that story. After Ms. Ross left, Mr. Gordy personally chose a wonderful singer to join the group as lead singer. They continued to work with th company's top producers and sing songs written by very successful writers (Stevie Wonder, Frank Wilson, Norman Whitfield, Smokey Robinson, Stephen Schwartz, Jimmy Webb, etc.). The music for their recordings also continued to be from the Funk Brothers. As was true of all Motown acts, the Andantes were used on occasion to augment their sound before and after Ms. Ross left the group. So, neither Mr. Gordy nor anyone else withdrew support for the Supremes after Ms. Ross departed, and they had a number of solid hits in the ensuing years. The longevity of most rock and roll and soul groups is relatively short. The Supremes, with and without Ms. Ross, had a long and successful run, and there is no reason for anger at anyone. Still today, they remain the most successful recording group in our country's history. Ms. Ross was also named by Billboard magazine as the Female Artist of the 20th century and by the Guinness Book of World Records as the Most Successful Female Recording Artist of All-Time. The original members of the Supremes are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and have been recognized in countless ways. The members of the group are loved and celebrated all over the world. Ms. Wilson''s criticisms of Ms. Ross, Ms. Ballard's admission of irresponsible conduct on tour and Ms. Ross' decision to leave the group have not and will not cause them to be loved less, and it will not stop their wonderful music from being played around the world until the end of time. It is past time for the bickering about who did what or who did not do what to end. We should just celebrate the fact that these talented, beautiful women existed and gave us a legacy of music that is literally matchless.

Oh, give me a break, Kenneth Hamlett!!!! You sound like an ad from the Motown propaganda "let's make Diane a solo star" campaign. I could counter every ONE of your statements; however, I will just address ONE! Diane was to be given 15 to 20 million dollars for the RTL tour. Yes, Diane, as a solo act, was worth more than Mary and Cindy as individual performers; however, when you put The Supremes back together, all values go UP! If Diane agreed to 12 million and Mary was offered 8 instead of 3 or 4, there would have been no problem. One of the good things that came out of the FAILURE of the RTL tour was that it settled once and FOREVER that Diane was NOT The Supremes and that the legacy of the legendary trio was greater than ANY of its individual members INCLUDING Diane. Diane deserved all the embarrassment and humiliation that she suffered from that fiasco..................and I'll address one more, and that's it: Smokey Robinson was a Motown insider, like Diane. Only those two groups, Supremes an Miracles, changed the names. It was always Martha and The Vandellas. The name of The Miracles was done a year earlier. Giving Martha a last name at the same time was just done to make it look good and fair when The Supremes' name was changed. Why didn't they change the name of the Four Tops? Jackson Five? Temptations? Marvelettes? The reason why it was such a big deal to change the name of The Supremes was because The Supremes were so HUGE, recognizable individually, and ubiquitous! The Miracles and Vandellas were names on records with anonymous faces. You can't compare the other acts to The Supremes. Plus, they had 10 number 1 records as The Supremes.............the public did not want the name change and people STILL refer to them as THE SUPREMES today. Another good example is The Four Seasons! The entire time that they had hits, they were called the 4 Seasons............no one even knew Frankie Valli's name..........another name on a record with anonymous faces. At the very end of their career, the name was changed to Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons and that is how everyone today refers to them. History is not always an accurate recording of the facts.............that is especially true when we are talking about Motown's version of the history of The Supremes when it applies to Diane Ross. I guess you also believe that Diane's name says "Diana" on her birth certificate. If you do, I have some swampland for sale in Florida...........wanna buy it?

It would be a great reality show to see Diane and Mary find a way back to the happiness they owe themselves and one another. I am sure Oprah would be interested. Hey, that could really be a great, healing show if done right. And it would be worth it to all three of the original Supremes.

+Slaychelle, you were absolutely right. No different than Clive Davis grooming Whitney Houston. Barry Gordy was not only in love with Diana Ross, but he already had obligations and in that time you just didn't run off from family. He saw something in her that was different............like Ike saw in Tina Turner, who, with his grooming became better than he ever could be. There is no need to throw salt at Diana, they all had dreams, she was one that didn't give up on her dreams. Every person can do the same thing when it comes to dreams but only the ones that have the guts to pursue them will achieve them.

I would’ve loved to have seen more performances like this with the three of them singing to the children. They loved kids and they wanted to release a children’s album. They recorded “Diana Ross and The Supremes Sing Disney Classics,” but the album got cancelled and replaced with “Diana Ross and The Supremes Sing Funny Girl.”

OMG! So confused, when I listen to "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" I always hear Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, THE ORIGINAL! "Love Child" Rhonda was very lucky that until she was thirteen years old she had the father figure of Bob Silberstein, I'm sure by then even herself had figured out she was the spitting image of her real father Berry Gordy? In a child, that psychological damage is sometimes irreversible. Diane knew she had to make it up by being the exemplary parent she became!

Lol….Ladi Mannan, get familiarize with music, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas were a "LEAD & BACKUP SINGERS" group from the start. Unlike The Marvelettes & The Supremes that were a "FEMALE TRIO" (Group on which all members can lead according to the material tackled) until Berry Gordy to please his concubine change the dynamics of the group. (The Diane Ross Show / Diane Ross & The Supremes) Ignorance is not becoming, polish up your intellect!

Ladi Mannan for some reason no remembers that Martha Reeves Always sang lead and no one ever said a word. I have never understood that. Same with Smokey. Levi Stubbs, It was always about Michael that is why Diana introduced them as Michael Jackson and the Jackson Five, yet none of the other Jackson brothers complained not even Jermaine who co lead on Some songs not all.
@TWTR4EVER

Mitchell Steven ARE YOU BOTH (Ladi Mannan & Mitchell Steven) STUPID/IDIOT or just trying to be seen as one? "Martha & The Vandellas" were always a "LEAD & BACKUP singers group later autistically build as "Martha Reeves & The Vandellas", the same applies to "Smoky Robinson & The Miracles" The Four Tops, The Temptations & The Supremes were, one a QUARTET, (The Four Tops) one s QUINTET (The Primes/ The Temptations) & one a FEMALE TRIO (The Primettes/ The Supremes) and if you don't know the difference you should not be even be discussing the issue, you're just IGNORANT to the subject! (what an idiot?) In a FEMALE TRIO, QUARTET, QINTET all member of the group according to their vocal abilities, in the case of THE SUPREMES (Florence Ballard - Soprano)(Mary Wilson - Contra Alto)(Diane Ross - Mezzo Soprano) they can take over the lead, provided the music arrangement is played on their "VOCAL KEY"! YOU'RE DUMBER THAN DOG SHIT Mitchell Steven!!!!!! You always been since your origina RU-vid name "blkshepherd"!!!! WHAT A JACKASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have researched a lot on Motown. So I was trying to figure out...I think I know...You are wonderful, to be able to love, despite...and want others to move on into "love", also, despite....Thanks for being the "voice of hope and reasoning" amidst all this "hurt"! How ironic, that Motown created so much "energy of power" for the world, but for the creators sucked so much "joy of life". We have been "blessed eternally" by all of you.It's like you all nailed yourselves to the cross.What sacrifice!

I don't think Mary was able to get out of that backing singer mould. Even in a solo she sounds like she is singing background harmonies. Great voice, but not for a lead. That little boy is like, "How the fuck did I get here?"
@cristoferchanimak
@cristoferchanimak 8 лет назад
I think Mary's voice is great. But it took a very specific formula to get a hit, and Diane's lead was a large part of that. Obviously Diane and Berry had absolutely zero class or professionalism in certain aspects of this story (including their relationship...fame and fortune apparently will never buy you class) but make no mistake, Diane and her stage presence and voice, while not the most talented, was definitely the most radio and TV friendly of the group. She had the weakest voice but the most star power. It's too bad.

MS MARY WILSON shines and in total control at lead! By now this was a rarity, after Florence Ballard was ousted and replaced by Cindy Birdsong, (1966/67) that anyone but Diane Ross within THE SUPREMES would sing lead was over Diane's dead body! "The Diane Ross Show" / Diane Ross & The Supremes was in full throttle (1967/1969) as she was ridding the "coattails" of the group into her 1969 solo career, career crafted together by her lover benefactor Motown CEO, Berry Gordy!

Well, I first saw these Hollywood Palace videos about 6 years ago, and they are great. Although it's a bit "strange" watching children dance to a song about illegitimate children LOL, there is one thing I truly enjoyed: Diana Ross & the little boy. I've not researched, but this is 1) a very trusting child with strangers or 2) a child who is familiar with Diana Ross ??? so, my point is that IF I HAD BEEN been contrasting her regular human being vs. entertainer, I would have NEVER guessed that she was good with children as she performed on stage. She seems so natural and genuine with this little boy. From all indications from HER OWN CHILDREN, Diana Ross is a loving, caring, and engaged mother. I can feel the instinctive, intrinsic "love" that Diana has for children when she is interacting with "Vince"... it's like, there is an audience & several cameras, but in all the world it's only Vince & Diana in this moment = priceless.

@TWTR4EVER
@TWTR4EVER 9 лет назад
luis grant, Is Jean Terrell, not Tyrell, second all members of THE SUPREMES had their own unique voice to contribute, they never had a chance to shine because "THE BOSS" Motown, CEO Berry Gordy was Diane Ross Sugar Daddy, industry benefactor, lover and father of their bastard daughter Rhonda! He turned all other SUPREMES into Diane's shadow, for her only to shine MONOPOLIZING AND HIGHJACKING the group to pave the way for her 1969 "solo career"

"Up the Ladder to the Roof" is a 1970 hit single recorded by The Supremes for the Motown label. It was the first Supremes single to feature new lead singer Jean Terrell in place of Diana Ross, who officially left the group for a solo career two weeks before the recording of this song in January 1970. This song also marks a number of other firsts:
