I agree, I feel someone should carry the slack from ALTA an take it to the next level in popularity. Cause Alta has it right, they had to endure allot of hardship through the years. But they made the better all around bike
Alta created a very competitive bike on their first try. With continued development and updates could have been even better. Good to see KTM developing the internal know how for developing electric bikes with the Freeride. Pierer Mobility reports show smaller Freeride versions coming in the future.
Sadly Alta doesn't exist anymore so that choice is gone. I don't think there is one "best" choice - just different approaches. Find a product that matches your targeted riding and budget and go enjoy the electric ride experience!
@@mxengineer1 that is a good approach and one I’m currently doing. This market is maturing and the use cases seem to be overlapping. Gives me confidence that I’ll find one that is the right fit for me.
Yeah the sad part is they stopped making the Alta for some reason back in 2018 I think and they are only found on the used market for about 18k. They have become legendary for their speed for an E dirt bike
This place belongs to a buddy of mine and a great place to ride (Grear MX). The Alta EXR in this video belongs to a friend of mine...I am lucky to have friends that let me ride their bikes! The Freeride and Sur Ron do belong to me!
I wanted a sur ron, untill I learned they need so much in upgrades.. 2500 for suspension 1k for wheels that won't break, brakes, handle bar and riser, bac and 72v now we are more then the ktm. It's a shame alta isn't around anymore
Alta was an impressive bike for a first try. Wish they could have survived and continued developing the bikes. The Sur Ron is a segment busting combination of power/weight/price for a small electric motorcycle and it does have room for improvement in many areas.
Get the right tool for the job. Upgrading doesn’t makes sense. If the stock Sur-Ron doesn’t fit your needs, then buy something else that fits your needs. Upgrading is for bored losers who need to “compensate”, like people who modified their trucks, lift, etc...
@@FriedTurkey Yes, the KTM is awesome. But the Surron is very light, easy to lift. As for the other points, it’s all capitalism. Someone told you to like such things. In my family, I was raised differently. Spend money on books, develop your intellect. Focus on education, work hard.
Give me 125 true miles range or 65 miles range and easy battery exchange. It has to be street legal-Dual Sport-with excellent suspension and brakes. If you build it, I will buy it.

Yes own the Freeride and Sur Ron X. I did own an Alta EXR for a few months a while ago. The Alta EXR in the video belonged to a friend of mine who has since sold it and has a new 2020 Freeride on the way.
I mean for the price, there is no competing with the Sur-ron. Nothing beats the Sur-ron if your looking for something relatively cheap and extremely fun. I would say you are definitely getting your moneys’ worth with the sur Ron and wouldn’t be to scared to throw it around and get dirty.
Yes the Sur Ron is a great value in terms of performance and fun per dollar. However the wheels/tires/brakes on the Sur Ron X will feel marginal for riders coming off full size dirt bikes from OEM established manufacturer's.

I believe the Alta battery was 5.8 Kwh and weighed about 68 lbs. The KTM Freeride E-XC battery is 3.9 Kwh and weighs about 62 lbs. Not sure if that is better technology or simply larger factor or safety on the KTM battery...one of the companies is still in business.

Yea each electric bike seems to have it's own unique sound...a combination of gear, chain, electric motor noises all combining to create a different sound!
Map 4 on the Alta is plenty fast for moto! The Alta was rated at 50hp and very fast: looking forward to seeing how fast my 80HP Stark Varg is when it arrives late this fall.
The Alta EXR used in this video was sold as street legal from new while the KTM Freeride E-XC and Sur Ron are sold as off road only here in the US. Depending on state regulations sometimes it is possible to get off road bikes plated for road use.
The use Ron needs better rims and tires. There is a guy who was the record for top speed, or he did. Check out Jack Cecils channel. He upgrade the battery and r to like a 8000w. It's incredible
Yes a Sur Ron with more power would be nice however as you noted the wheels (and suspension) could use an upgrade for so much more power. Stock the Sur Ron X is still a very fun machine.

For the Alta to be that good that soon in its release.....then go out of business.... supposedly because of HD....all I can say is......what a damn shame.... I was going to buy one and race it all over the new England area ...saw josh hill crank at the red bull straight rythem then Daryl Durham win in A classes all over the US....then bam.....bankrupt...chapter 15....wtf??? Someone should be held accountable for slowing the quick progress of the electric MX bike.
There is always discussion of "tipping point" for electric power trains. If the Alta was about 15 lbs lighter and had about 50% more real world range it may have toppled the ICE bikes. I owned an Alta EXR for a few months - what a fantastic bike. For a first try at a serious electric moto bike the Alta was a really good motorcycle. So disappointing the company simply stopped operation. The KTM Freeride is a great option for a fun woods bike with electric powertrain from a major OEM that hopefully won't stop operations anytime soon!
@@mxengineer1 What kind of hours could you get riding mountainous woods single track on the Alta? I have an opportunity to buy a 2019 MXR for $11k with 80 hours.
@@patrickdailey3150 I could get almost 45 miles slow urban street riding on my Alta EXR and never pushed it to a dead battery on trails but easily hit 25 miles of trail riding so between 2~2.5 hours riding
@@mxengineer1 I did end up getting the Alta. What a different experience. I could do about 2 hrs continuous mountainous single track on a full charge. The thing is, I cannot ride 2 hrs continuous on my 300 xcw without breaks. The only thing I miss is a clutch to blip over longs and creeks etc. How does the KTM E-XC range compare against the Alta for similar terrain? I'm thinking the E-XC would be more enjoyable on my tight little 2.5 acre backyard. The Alta feels like a bull in this tight space even on level 1. Thanks for the feedback. Can't wait for the Stark!
@@patrickdailey3150 Welcome to the world of e-mobility! Electric dirt bikes are a different experience - hard to explain - best to just go ride one! My KTM 300XCW can go 45~50 miles at my slow pace in the woods. The counter balanced KTM 250/300 TPI engines are so smooth and the bike is fairly quiet too. Nice ICE bike to go along with your Alta..have fun!! I miss my Alta E-XR and am anxiously awaiting my Stark Varg...11/24/22 delivery date!
In this quick comparison ride I did not take lap times. However the Alta is rated at 50hp and in map 4 feels as fast (or faster) than a 450 moto bike. The Freeride has 24 hp and about 31 ft-lbs of torque and weighs about 242 lbs so it it very quick off the line from 0~20mph. Electric is a very different feel in power and with the lack of noise and vibration of an internal combustion engine can "feel" a little slower.
I owned an Alta EXR but sold it no after the company stopped operations. The bike I rode in this video belonged to a friend of mine. They are great bikes - wish Alta was still around.
