Supports my book tinyurl.com/season-on-the-edge. Surfcasting for striped bass. Catching stripers off the beach very close to shore on soft plastic lures, Tsunami Sandeels.
John I love watching your videos you have given me much inspiration to start making my own. I still got s ways to go in the editing but I'm learning slowly but surely thanks for the vids and catch them up
*Great item. First cast out of the package caught a nice bass. Pulls smooth in the water and sets up nicely immediately upon retrieval. Worth adding to your tackle box.*
I just bought your "Bucktail" book ... the "Kindle for PC" version. Still reading it ... it is excellent. Your writing style is perfect for fellow anglers. Great info on the time honored lure. This vid: "wow, don't ya wish you could count on those surf conditions more often, but with maybe 55 degree air temps ?".
I was using these tonight and did pretty well. Catching them right in the lip like the video shows. Then I ran into some bluefish and they just destroyed them. Bit the tails off after one strike. Great lures though.
DO YOU EVER GET SKUNKED??????? :) reading "season on the edge right now", finished the bucktail book last week (in a couple of days)...finally finished putting ALL my data from my fish log/notebooks into fisherslog this weekend...maybe I'll see you out there in the spring, can't wait for next year already. thanks for another good video (good at making me jealous).
what rod should i get to pair with a penn fierce reel? i am looking for a light rod that can cast far. also what size fierce with a 10 ft rod? thanks so much i love your book
Hey I just bought your book and I have some questions. when does the fall run stop on LI and start. when are shad here?what line is a good all around and I just started making my own bucktails do you have any suggestions or tips? Can you catch bass in the spring?if you can where that might be if your a surf caster?one more, can you answer my questions in a private if you can
John I been trying these but I feel like the don't get distance I work a bolder field a lot in riverhead area and unless the bass area with in 20 ft or less I'm not reaching them any suggestion to get firth I know distice on the ocean is not often a problem but just feel it's to light
Are you using 7 and 8-inch weighted Tsunami Sandeels?? These cast as well as a 1-ounce bucktail and better than a 6-inch Bomber, which I know is sort of a standard in the waters you're fishing. I'm thinking you might be using the unweighted version. No distance issue at all with the ones in this video.
hey john i noticed u always say u use a barrel swivel to connect your braid to leader do u ever just tie your braid to leader? i usually tie braid to leader and i was wondering if there may be a benefit to your method
Do the cross winds ever cause an knots in the braid while casting? I just got a 7'6'' penn allegiance with penn SSV 5500 spooled with 20lb braid and every other cast a a knot will form anywhere between the reel and the tip of the rod. I think i spent 75% of my trip untangling knots. It was a bad first experience for me.
That used to happen to me when I first started casting heavy lures on the beach. Turned out I'd been spooling the braid backwards, so in the wind it wanted to curl back onto to itself because of line memory. Watch a vid on spooling braid properly - you need to make sure things are spinning the right way when you spool up the braid. I also find some brands are better than others. I never have any problems with Power Pro.
When fishing hat beach lip close in like that have you ever tried more parallell casting ? Also I like to use the smaller ES 75 and ES 100 Tin Eel Squids with my eel rubber, as I can really retrieve very slowly and still impart action... What do you think in terms of Rigged as apposed to the the Tsunamis which are really about the best sand eel imitation out there, just out of the package ? thanks for another great video.
Awesome stuff as usual, John. I'm new to the game and have several rigs, all will catch bass, but all are 9' rods w/ medium to heavy action. I have to "pendulum" cast or "off the beach" style, which limits me if space is limited. I'd love to stand and fire like that, but im afraid of hooking a 50 with a rod that cant handle it. can i use a smaller freshwater rod and fill it with some 50 braid?
Thanks John. It may seem lofty and overconfident, but I wanna be prepared to land a 50lb striper, since that is my ultimate goal. I assume if I use the drag correctly, use my surroundings, and exhibit some patience, a 50 can be landed on 30lb line, right? p.s. Winter sucks.
just go by the dimensions on the reel. It tells you what pound test to use for mono or braid. if you notice, when john is fishing the lip, he isn't casting that far. That's the whole point of the lip. Stripers cruise there and hunt for bait.
Steve MacDonald Sorry I missed this question. The only issue with that gear and a 50 would be rocks or obstructions, and there aren't any in this setting.
hey jon incredible channel and knowledge!!!!! i would like to know if you have any suggestions for fishing the myrtle beach surf for any kind of fish i only have a 7.5 ft spinning rod.. thank you so much...
I can't wait until i am proficient enough to just snap my fingers and tell bass to destroy my lure all day long. you have to be cheating ;-) But seriously i love your videos and i hope to meet you someday
how many pounds on average where you catching.....tjey look like 30 inchers witch is pretty big. So my guess is 9 pounds. I'd really like to see you measure your catches so we have an idea how Large your catches are. I always measure and waigh...all my catches so it's clear what I'm catching
