The amount of spinning reels for surf fishing is overwhelming and can be a difficult task to choose one. Gear ratio, number of bearings, reel size, all have their places but what is the best option for you? I narrow down what to look for when choosing a spinning reel for surf fishing.

Great advice! Really appreciate it. I have a Diawa BG5000 and was looking for something a bit smaller for targeting pompano and whiting on the surf. Going with the Battle 3 4000

I predominantly set fish using cut bait to the last gut and rip. I like big reels for jacks sharks reds rays drum king etc. They all like to run amd I need line capacity especially IF they do somehow break me off I want line left to use especially if I'm on a tall pier after sharks Goliath etc. I have other set ups like you described for casting which I have tons of lures but almost don't do anymore unless fish are highly active aggressive or schooling
@G2COASTAL
@G2COASTAL Год назад
A vast majority of the fish I target in Alabama are 3lbs and under like Whiting, Pompano, Bluefish, Spanish, etc. A 4000 size reel allows me to catch them without feeling like Im just cranking them in but also allows me to bring in a big 40in Red. When specifically targeting the larger species you definitely want a bigger reel like you use. I have started targeting sharks in the 4-6ft range with a size 6000 reel and have had success.
@Colonel1Bravo

I like and have penn reels, but I have a saragosa also. I target various species using a 6500 size, and believe or not but a 10,000 saragosa is the same size as a Penn 6500 in capacity, weight, and drag. The numbers do not compare from some manufacturers. Good video

I have a 10’ Tsunami Rod paired with a 4000 Penn Pursuit IV. I’ve thought about sizing up but I don’t like to add on weight if I can help it. I’ve landed a nice Striper on it with no issues.

I agree with keeping the weight down especially when throwing lures. I can always feel it in my right shoulder after I throw heavier lures in the surf.

I agree...go as light on the reel as you can get away with for the target species.... We only used 5000 and 6000 reels but had to jump up to 7500 to hold bigger line and handle the 50" Drum and 6ft black tips.
@G2COASTAL

Exactly, its all relative to the target species. The bigger reels absolutely help you get those MONSTER drum in that you catch up there!

Awesome I have 2500 on my set ups all Penn pursuit 3s. I walk the beach with my bait and drift it. But I wanted to get the penn pursuit 4 As I wanted something a lil bit bigger for throwing out bigger baits in the surf, or for jetty/ pier fishing and I was stuck bet 3000 or 4000.

Thanks for the comprehensive video. When does balance of the rod come in to the picture when it comes to reel sizes?
@G2COASTAL
@G2COASTAL Год назад
The only time I feel balance is an issue is when a rod and reel are extremely mismatched as in a size 6000 reel on a small 6ft medium light rod or a size 2000 reel on 12ft heavy rod. Small reels on lightweight rods, big reels on big heavy rods is a simple way to look at it.

@@G2COASTAL I just ordered a TFO tactical surf 10’6 2-6. Its listed weight is 11.1 oz. What reel would recommend? It’s meant to be an all-arounder setup. I’d be looking to do 3-4 oz set rigs or through 2-3 oz lures.

I used penn spinfisher vi 4500 for whiting but I had an unexpected stingray hook up and it sounded like the reel was going to explode. I want to upgrade to a 5500 but I hope its not too much reel for whiting fishing
@G2COASTAL
@G2COASTAL 2 года назад
For my preference its a little big for Whiting but if you’re happy with a 5500 then get one. At the end of the days its your gear and you need to use what makes you happy.

Interesting explanation mate. Just want to start surf. You think a 4000 pursuit 4 match with 12 feet rod? What lb for the braid recommended?
@G2COASTAL
@G2COASTAL Год назад
Yes it will absolutely match up. The key to matching your rod and reel is to match them to your target species. 12ft rods can be rated medium light, medium, medium heavy, heavy, extra heavy. A 4000 Pursuit pairs well with the medium light- medium heavy range.

I live on the coast of São Paulo in Brazil, as it is rare to get a specimen over 10 kg, I use a 4.20 m rod of 20 lbs, casting 100 to 200 gr and a Shimano C 5000 reel, starting with fluorocarbon 0.375 mm, multifilament 0.16 mm and lead with 100 gr; long pitches for good fun.

@@G2COASTAL Here there is a "tradition" that fishermen invent "stories"; At the seaside where I live, these "monstrous sharks" do not exist, we have to settle for leisure and small specimens. Could it be that American fishermen also love to make up stories? hehehe

That can be a tough decision but to be 100% honest if you’re a casual angler who is only going to get out a handful of times a month then go with the Pursuit or even get two for the price of one Battle.

@@G2COASTAL 4000 size should be good enough for pier and bank fishing right?
@G2COASTAL
@G2COASTAL 6 месяцев назад
Yes for sure. I use 4000 size reels 90% of the time. They are small enough they don’t overpower a lot of the small fish but big enough they can bring in larger fish.
@VJTrey1
@VJTrey1 6 месяцев назад
What braid test lb do you recommend for 4000 size
@G2COASTAL
@G2COASTAL 6 месяцев назад
@@VJTrey1 I use 20lb braid because I throw a lot of 4oz weight surf fishing and anything under 20 will break sometimes. If you’re not going to be throwing weights that heavy you could drop down to 15lb braid to increase your line capacity.

Those are not completely sealed reels! Completely sealed reels are Van staal, zeebass and Visser. Penn Slammer 3,4 and Penn spinfisher v,vi are not completely sealed! They have some seals but not completely sealed. There is a difference!
