Great video Dylan ! Thanks so much for sharing your tips !! I got a SPL waterhousing with a big dome port and 20 mm to make split photography but i never find the good settings to have a good focus under and over the water, which settings would you recommend ?

I love this Vlog/Surf/Barrel photography stuff! I just got the delphin housing for my 1dx and im planning on testing it out today! I saw that you had a low apt, high shutter speed and low iso and was wondering if you really just mainly focus on changing the shutter speed. This is really cool i i now want to do what you do to xD

Hey Ty I have been trying a few different settings and it would depend on the lens and what I was shooting, either underwater or surfers. Aperture prioriy works well for the low light situations, I do try manual sometimes when conditions are still.

thanks man, yeah for sunrise just try to underexpose the shot so its not blown out, then you can bring back the blacks in post processing.

Wicked! Thanks for explain your process setting up your camera in the beginning. So I am shooting with a Nikon d810... my idea was to also use Aperture priority but that leaves me kinda hosed with my Aquatech housing seeing as i cant then change the aperture because i cant get to the front dial... I also cant get to my ISO. So knowing that now I guess I should just set my aperture before hand in M and then maybe use auto ISO and set the peramatures?... Would be interested in hearing your opinion. Cheers!

yeah you can use manual mode, set it up just before you seal it up. Aperture priority mode is good too and set your iso to auto. I would think you would have to do alot of trail and error in different conditions to know which settings to use. It also depends what your shooting, empty waves, underwater, sunset, surfers? hope that helps.

Yeah try 1/1000 second and 5.6 auto iso. As the light changes you’ll have to adjust.

Aloha Dylan, I am going to get a watercase for my Nikon D800, and my question is about the type of lens that I should use. Do you have any recommendations between a wide angle or a telephoto lens? I know you are using a 24-105mm, but if you could chose again for your first port, which lens would you choose to use? Mahalo for the videos!

Joel Pinho yeah good question Joel, it depends what your shooting for your first lens. You want to cover everything from wide angle to longer like the 200mm I have. 105mm is great, I think the next lens I'll get is the landscape lens 16-35mm 2.8.

Yeah I use single point focus, haven’t tried focus area. I have used manual focus sometimes but I found auto got me more shots. Manual is good too, for underwater because sometimes the camera struggles to lock focus on auto. I used 3ft on manual focus with a 15mm fisheye. Now I generally use auto.

So the higher you set ur ISO the faster the shutter speed, or the lower the ISO the slower the shutter speed?

i have a nikon d5500 and it shoots 5fps and 24 megapixels. I really want to buy a housing for it, but I'm not sure if i should buy a better camera first. I have been thinking about the d800 or even switching to canon. What do you recommend?

Yeah I mainly use canon, my 5d mark 3 shoots 6fps it's a bit slow for barrel shots but for surfers is fine. I would recommend getting the best gear you can afford and getting the best lenses too over a good body. The lens makes all the difference, but just get the best equipment that you can afford and that will hopefully give you the best results.

you should get a dicapac then, I'm getting mine for a d3200 and camera wearhouse and there suppose to be excellent. There is a video of jon jon florence using it at pipeline.

Yeah that's tough, it depends on the conditions and what you are shooting so set the white balance, I would use shutter priority , at like 1/1250 or 1/1000.

Jake Vargas you can it's aperture priority, but you can adjust your ISO and then you shutter speed can increase.

haha maybe eventually, main thing is to not hang on one shot for too long. Build a story from your edit. and most of the time its alot of work to make something look watchable.

How differently does the candle wax method work compared to the spit and dip method? If the candle wax works how it sounds, it should be heaps easier than spit n' dip.

wax is for the flat port and dip and shoot is for the dome, you could try wax on the dome but its alot of glass to cover and im not sure how long it would last.

Why would you need to pick a white balance if your shooting raw?

Yeah I like to have it set so I can see it in the preview screen when in the water. But yeah it doesnt make a difference, it’s just good to have it set to something close so your photos Arnt all out of wack, less editing later. And I prefer it to auto white because then each image has a differnent white balance and adjusting it across multiple images becomes annoying.
