I always figure he didn't really care about winning. He cared about having fun and living each moment to its fullest. He didn't enter to win. He entered to *surf*
I just love Joe’s energy. The fact that he doesn’t take any one moment for granted and chooses to see everything in a positive light is so wholesome, even if it is more than a little unrealistic. I love this character. “How’s it feel to win, Joe?” “…I won?”

as a kid i found this movie dull and kinda uninteresting but as an adult....it's aged so well. These jokes absolutely bang and oh god every time they make a fried chicken joke bruh i swear 😭😭😭
Even before he learns their language, he understood that they were hungry by their actions alone. Chicken Joe is definitely smarter than how he portrays himself.
I just realized why Joe is the best surfer. He doesn’t know or care what’s going on and he doesn’t need to because shit will just kinda work out for him. He’s the all about “going with the flow” which is what surfing is all about

Characters like this can easily get annoying and end up as the butt of every joke, but Chicken Joe never got tiresome or overly mean-spirited. You're usually laughing at him, but not in a 'look at this idiot' way but more of a 'he really just feels nothing but laid-back joy and interest, doesn't he?' way. Underrated comic relief figure
Chicken Joe never struck me as a stoner. Rather he always seemed like the guy who was aware that he would be the cause of his own stress, So he chose to instead enjoy the moment, remain positive, and see the natural beauty in the world around him. Also, I'll say this movie was smarter than it had any right being and it had some excellent references to good surf documentaries. When Chicken Joe says where he's from, the scene cuts to a picture of him and it says sheboygan wisconsin. That's a direct reference to step into liquid where they do a segment about the great lakes surfers around Sheboygan Wisconsin who capture the essence of the stoke despite not being near the ocean. Which helps tie the different communities of surfers all around the world together. Which is why I hated the attempted sequel. I refuse to acknowledge its existence even now.
@wontonschannel well yeah my opinion is very subjective. He never struck me as a stoner type and struck me more as a laid back guy living the surfing lifestyle of enjoying the moment and just plain being a good person. And I think more people should be like the chicken. Laid back, relaxed, friendly. Worry about what needs worrying about but don't let your worries dominate you like they did Cody in this movie. Sure I can see people getting the stoner thing from it. But there's nothing inherently wrong with him either.

7:28 i think it’s rather touching and cool that these two best friends(for 2 days) where the final two in the contest and even more touching that Cody let Joe win. 🏆
Chicken Joe is that one out and out pure soul that you come across in your life, the one that the world never managed to get a hold of, the one who just rides their own waves and is kind to everyone. Be like chicken Joe, chicken Joe’s cool.

The jungle is like the most peaseful place on the planet" This movie and Joe are probably two of my best examples of funny, original, and very well-written plots and dialogue in animated movies and probably just movies in general. We love you Joe!

Chicken Joe isn't just comic relief. He's the mission statement of the film. It's why he won, Cody spent the whole film learning to be like chicken Joe, Joe just want to surf some more.
Thie whole movie just perfectly captures the spirit of animation movies that is completely lost nowadays. The attention to detail, like his actual chicken walk, and fun innovative concepts like the shakey camera documentary style, hell the whole damn story. That's in line with all the awesome movies of my childhood, from Hercules to Cars, Ratatouille, the Incredibles and so on. That was the golden age of animation movies.
"I can feel it in my nuggets" now that I know that chicken nuggets are just the blended up bones and guts this line fits a lot better than I thought it did.
Kinda disappointed they didn’t show the part where Joe says “I never knew my father either” and then in cuts to a picture of his father ON A GODDAMN BUCKET FULL OF CHICKEN 😭😭
