When Z bows to the wave, that's a way of saying, "Water gives life, but can take it away". A sign of acknowledgement. Animation is rarely this enlightening. This was a gem.
I just like how almost everything Cody remembers about this scene is wrong in some type of way. "He walked up to me," ...Cody pushes his way through. "He gives me this one of a kind unique necklace," ...the guy has a flipperful of necklaces that are exactly the same as his. The unreliability and distortion of memory is very realistic in this scene😂.
You can also go further and apply it to Cody’s view of Z’s philosophy: “he wasn’t afraid to live because he wasn’t afraid to die” as it’s later revealed that big Z faked his death because of his fear of being seen as a failure jn the eyes of others (a metaphorical “death” of his image).
Thats why only some aspects of life are great and it didn't click for me until I watched the movie boyhood...life is just a series of moments both good and bad Its the moments that we hold on to when we lay restless at night, when we watch horrific displays of brutality, when we share laughs with the ones closest to us...its just a series of moments
Not only does this movie give me nostalgia, but it makes me feel like Cody does, about wanting to be great. Anyone else do that, relate themselves experiences to the characters, almost like some characters reflect your own life and situation?
My favorite part about this scene is when Z turns faces the tube and bows in respect to that beautiful wave. I’m not a surfer, so I wanna know: has any surfer ever ridden in a tube, and if so, what’s it like? Is it as epic as they make it out to be in the movie?
One of my favorite movies. It came out 2007 when the entire planet was going crazy about Penguins. -_- March of the Penguins and Happy Feet were out as well. Ask any girl back then what her favorite animal was and 8 outta 10 times, she'd say, "Penguin".
0:45 , took me months to perfect this but I finally did it and got used to it ,I still surf from this day as I started around 2012 , all because of big z , ❤️surfs up
ya know the cool thing about the original dvd release? it looks like a bootleg and the dvd case looks like a bootleg dvd case but its not. man. what a great movie. i was so little when this came out. the nostalgia is real here
Indeed he was. Especially for coming back for Cody after he saved Joe from Tank. And Cody helped Z regain his surfing spirit. That makes him a hero too.
I remember this being a favorite of mine when i was a kid and is partly the reason i started surfing and the first time i was decent enough at tube riding i tried to re create the scene from 0:34 coolest moment of my life

How does the sequel live up to the legacy of Big Z? It doesn’t, instead John Cena’s the mentor Cody looks up. What a load of crap. The original Surf’s Up deserves to be respected.
If they’re gonna do a sequel, they should do it right. Changing the original story and adding in celebrities(just because) for just a cash grab is mediocre
2 years later, but that's one of the main common occurrences - this movie is a mockumentary, and often times Cody talks about himself in a better light to show himself up to the viewers. Other examples "One of a king necklace" - penguin behind Z has a bunch "And he tells me..." - big Z says nothing "When I realized Zeke was big Z I gave him a moment, that's the respectful thing to do" - Cody is shown announcing big Z is alive, and telling him to make a come back
