This pricing would have been a killer: $599 for i5 4GB / 128GB. $699 for i5 8GB / 256GB. $799 for i5 16GB / 512GB. $899 for i7 16GB / 512GB.

@Kerr Beeldens if they cant put in an i7 then just top out at $799. RAM and SSD are very cheap nowadays. Im surprised they’re charging $200 to go from 128gb to 256gb.

yes because 600$ for 4gb of ram is very reasonable. barely can run teams. those specs would be killer, but still their would not be enough extra sales to make up for the increased cost in manufacturing. also they dont want this to cannabalize their sales of the surface laptop 3

People need to look at this device as a few things: 1. An entry level premium device. Premium build quality, premium design, but the entry level version. For anyone who's used a Surface product, you KNOW there is a difference in the Surface build and most other machines. I use a Dell XPS for work, have gone through business-grade Lenovos, and have used friend's Asus machines as well. None of these compare to the fit and finish of a Surface. My Surface Book is probably the best built machine I've ever owned. 2. Microsoft understands that most people's data is in the cloud in 2020. Yes, people like us who are watching reviews online hours after they drop are probably a different kind of consumer. If you're reading this the day the device dropped, you're probably a power user. However, for the student, the teacher, the person who needs an office machine, 64GB of storage is not bad. Of course, since Windows 10 takes up 10-12 GB of that, so you're not left with much, it's not for the power user. 3. Microsoft moving the Surface down market is a great thing for them. Make an affordable Surface who's main usage is cloud based apps and data, then get people into the brand. This would also make a great travel machine as a companion to a more powerful device that stays home.

$200 extra to go from 128GB to 256GB? No way! $700 for the mid spec model is also way too much. I'm also very disappointed that this laptop has a sub-1080p display. Even the cheaper Surface Go 2 has an FHD+ display with IR face unlocking. The mid spec model should've been the base model and the top spec model should've been $650. the entry model as an ultrabook for those who just browse the web, watch youtube, and type their essays - it's a no brainer... prior to this i was looking at stuff and they were around £400 or less but came with mobile processors or really crappy ones. Then for some reason they just jump up to around £800. This has that faster process, the minimum ram need for everyday tasks (i saw some with 2gb, which is def not enough)... granted the 64gb is emmc - this model should have had an expandable micro sd slot - but arguable for a web book with some save docs it's more than enough and you do have that usb-a or usb-c for a portable dongle (which many students use...or cloud storage) - but again, ive seen some ultrabooks only offer 32gb. It's nice that they do offer another tier up that does come with the ssd and 8gb ram with the fingerprint scanner... at £699 it is kinda priced at the same price as the entry surface pro 7 - which is core i3, only 4gb ram, and has no keyboard etc - so arguably you get a bit more for your buck... The major issue i have is that sudden jump to £899 for 256gb storage... it's still an i5 and 8gb... not other extras - thats pushing it into surface laptop 3 category which has the full metal build, the bigger screen with pen support etc as for the base... it's mostly made of recycled material...so although it's not metal, at least microsoft are trying to do their bit for the environment. and let's not forget... if your a student you can get student pricing (this is the same for teachers...in the uk they also extend this to armed forces and nhs workers)

Here are my questions: What if you are a student gamer? What are good games to play on it (not AAA titles, just good games)? Do you think 128gb is enough for a student? Would you buy this over a Macbook Air?
@MatthewMoniz
@MatthewMoniz 4 года назад
If you’re a student gamer you’d be looking at a legion 3i or nitro from Acer. 128gb is fine for productivity work like word processing, excel etc. If developing an external drive may be needed. This is much cheaper then a MacBook Air but I’ll need to review first before answering that question

I like the idea of this, but I really wish the base model was a 128gb, 8gb, i3 model instead of what it currently is. Although the i5 is really nice for the price, I really can't get behind only having 4gb of ram and 64gb and the i3 is sufficient at level.

I really don't understand why this Go model (laptop and tablet) are launched. The starting price for both is not bad, but the configuration that someone should consider have a price that is just too high and too near to the more powerful Surface Pro and Surface Laptop.

The GO is probably thin so I'm sceptical about the thermals, if it heats up a lot or maybe the fans are loud cause my Dell with an i5 10210U gets really damn hot and even keeps the fans on when it's on proper sleep mode! It's 17.5mm thick!

Base model should've been an i3 with 8GB memory and 128GB storage. The Core i3 is absolutely fine for the base model but 4GB is limiting and 64GB storage will just mean headaches updating Windows etc...

once the 8/128 model goes on sale for 599 (and it will, microsoft products always do) it'll be pretty awesome due to the great display and fit and finish. will be very compelling at the price. heck it's arguably a really good deal even at 699. I wouldn't touch a 4GB windows machine. Linustechtips did some testing and on windows almost all of 4GB is taken up out of the box on 4GB windows machines. I think he was only able to open 6-7 chrome tabs before hitting the page file, where with 8GB IIRC it was like 120 tabs before hitting the page file.

I have a question. Why do companies make such laptop when we have so called gaming laptops which are cheap, more powerful, have lots of ports, and can do literally everything??
@mahoslash
@mahoslash 4 года назад
With my own experience daily driving with a Surface Pro 7 (i7-1065G7, 16G RAM, 256G), it is light enough to carry around everyday for work without strain while it still have some decent horsepower under the hood. I own a 15.2 inch Lenovo T560 and you really do not want to carry that brick with you when you commute or travel around. The combined weight of nearly 3 kilos is not the kind of dead weight you'd like to lug around daily, especially in stormy weather. Even my brother gave up on carrying around his 15 inch Asus gaming laptop and traded in for a far lighter and smaller Matebook X Pro when he needs to be periodically stationed in remote airports. Most gaming laptops drop between 2~3 kilos (power brick included) while ultrabooks mainly land well under 2 kilos max. (My Surface Pro 7 lands around the 1.3~1.5 kilo range with the full accessories.) Trading off the GPU will have it's merit if your work does not need one. On the other hand, if your work really needs a few extra GPUs in your computer, unless you're an entrepreneur, usually your company hardware will be capable of handling that work and you do not need bring an extra gaming laptop to work anyways. (If not, you may consider quitting your job and find a better company who can supply you with the adequate tools to do your tasks.) With that said......I still don't get why Microsoft pushed out such a low spec laptop at the moment. Sure we do trade in some performance for ease of carry and use when we decided to pick an ultrabook, but 4Gs of RAM in 2020 can barely run anything smoothly and literally is almost useless in most cases, either it's for school or work.

I think in this price range buying the Laptop Go is really just for brand loyalty. There are better AMD laptops incoming and maybe the new 11th gen Intel notebooks? An example is the Matebook 14 AMD at £750 with 8gb/256gb, 2k display, Ryzen 4000H. This will have far better performance and in fact, looks better if that is indeed important. The bigger display will be a bonus. Maybe with a discount, the Laptop Go will be a bit more interesting but Huawei usually gives £200 free gifts with their laptops so Huawei def.
