“Two kilometers in an icebox“ I needed to laugh a bit bc 14-15 degrees is the warmest the water gets here at the Baltic and North Sea (in summer!)😂. But I understand that the difference between the hot air on land and the “cold water“ in comparison can cause trouble.

Yes, I thought they should definitely come here and swim in the literally freezing water. Aberdeen has freezing water and great surf. 16 though. I get excited when our local lake hits 10’ let alone 16. I did two one hour Scuba dives in 8’ water with a totally broken dry suit. That caused hypothermia problems, I couldn’t lift myself out the water.

I've had heatstroke while in the Army, it sneaks up on you sometimes and it's scary. I'm from New York state near Canada and had never been to Oklahoma before and didn't know how hot it could get. Training one second and the next thing I knew I was soaking wet and in the back of an ambulance! They had wrapped me in wet ice water-soaked sheets and had dumped the remaining water from the cooler on me for good measure. Got separated from my boots and cap and was brought back to the barracks once I'd recovered in my socks!

I wonder if they wouldve been able to make the swim if they had first cooled their bodies down a bit by entering the shallows of the water and then coming back onto the sand for when it starts

I know it's all about what your body is adapted to, but jeez, 16C is like 8 degrees warmer than what we swim in in N. California and it feels fine.

I guess it's because of the difference of temp in the air and in the ocean that can shock the body since it didn't have the time to adapt the the cold water .... I'm not sure though but 16 degres is still cold and if the temps was about 30-40 the differences of temps must be enough to shock the body upon entering the water.

16°c is 60°f… yall-early to mid summer in the north east US has water in the 40s-50s and you’ll still get people swimming for hours. They come out grinning with their blue lips. But there’s nothing better than warming up in the sun afterwards. Such a serotonin boost.

REMEMBER! For the hot weather. Drink plenty, wear hats, suncream and clothing that is breathable and when your feeling too hot leave wherever you are and go home or sit in the car or go to a cooler place and rest.

I feel bad saying this but when I hear them say that the waters freezing when its 60 ° F (16°C) I'm sitting here thinking, "damn that's warm water." I also live somewhere where people in the dead of winter jump into 12°F water for charity. And in the summer that's about how hot the water gets in the summer.

It's also about the difference in air and water temperature that creates such a shock, I've experienced this problem in the mediterranean, water that would be nice in the north or europe, felt freezing cold in the hot climate of the mediterranean.

The water they swam in is the hottest water gets in Ireland usually 7 to 13 and we don’t complain of hypothermia 😂😂
@samco63

Lol I think it’s more the shock to the body going from 40 degree air in the direct sun, to 16 degrees would make your body go into shock and hypothermia - not exactly a conscious decision. We’re used to 24/25 degree water in 40 degree summers. The winter water is closer to 16 degrees. So it’s like going from summer to winter within seconds.
