CERN is famous for its big machines, for studying the tiniest constituents of matter to answer the biggest questions about the universe. Edda Gschwendtner is looking at radical yet simple ways of making our enormous machines smaller and more affordable.
Edda Gschwendtner, physicist, is the project leader of CERN’s plasma wakefield acceleration experiment, AWAKE. The need for ever-increasing particle energies to probe the fundamental building blocks of nature have led to machines of gigantic sizes. AWAKE pursues a novel technology that produces accelerating fields 1000 times higher than those achieved with conventional techniques. This will allow us to push the energy frontier of future accelerators while significantly decreasing the size of the machines themselves.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

If a particle rides in the wake of a wave created by a proton (with a given speed/aceleration), wouldn't the max speed of that particle be the one of the proton itself?

I think its to do with the strength of the wakefield instead which isnt directly dependent on the velocity of the driver beam but by the properties of the plasma and the characteristics of the driver beam.

hmm so you need an accelerator to power it. hmm doesn't sound like a desktop sized device could be made lol.

You don't need an accelerator to power it. She was referring to UPGRADING an existing accelerator with a wakefield accelerator. You could for example use a powerful laser. It still wouldn't fit in your desk, but it could be as large as an MRT

Tell those bastards they already took all our money and are failures and remind them their end in this game. They can't cheat God's design. They chose their destiny and now that God has told them their time is up, instead of falling on their knees, they chose to try to build an even BIGGER accelerator, 3x..and throwing in all their funds out if desperation. They quote "don't know what will cone through"..but keep pushing the agenda, and will get what they are seeking..those demons will be released and they will suffer.

You realize that scientists pay to use CERN, and it isn't paid by tax?
