Rod and I love to paddle year round. We have discovered some gear that help make that possible but we do have our limits. We have discovered that out cutoff is when the windchill is below 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4.4 Celsius). Because that is the case today, I made time to work on today's video. Hang on til the end to see two of Barry's Surfski wipeouts in cold water.

Hats off to you guys - in sunny australia we barely need a singlet top in winter. Respect.

It's just that even cold paddling is still better than a treadmill... Also, that "sunny Australia" part was a little cruel... :) You're a Gold Coast paddler?

Central coast of nsw - not that it matters climate wise, our only seasons are Summer and Cold Summer :) Keep up the content, you guys are doing a great job.

@@roddhamilton8473 thanks for kind words. We pretty much end every workout now with "I miss summer" but hopefully we'll get to our cold Summer soon.

Can't believe it stays that warm. Amazing.

I use Neil Pryde windsurfing mittens for paddling in cold weather. They have open palms so you still have a good feel for the paddle as if you’re not wearing gloves at all...and they keep your hands warm in cold weather despite the open palms...and bonus...you can fold them back up your wrist if your hands get too warm, or need your fingers to snap a pic, tie a line, etc.

Hey, Mac! Being albe to snap the pic is key! :) Nathan C told us you turned him onto those mittens, and he loves them. We''ll have to check them out.

Here in Seattle and on the WA coast fall-spring, I run pretty cold so I use a 5-4mm RipCurl FlashBomb which is fleece lined and completely dry like a dry suit without gasket or tearing issues. NRS WetShoe boots with a waterproof sock inside whether from NRS or SealSkinz. Glacier Glove Perfect Curve with Xcel anti-glove liners. NRS Storm Cap if not using the suit's hood. Sounds like a lot? I have more then enough flex for paddling. On land a Surf Fur cloak, popular up here in the race culture. MTI Vibe vest in orange. Sometimes in colder wind chill temps will add my 20yr old yellow Kokatat splash jacket, works for hi-vis too. I'll add or remove anything to put in PFD or my ski's cockpit screw-on hatch.

@@ThePaddleChannel Nope the surfing suits these days are very flexible. I raced i the suit on Saturday and surfed today, no issues ever. I prefer over baggy drysuits. Today in 37F, 47F water. Took a swim, no worries.

Great video! I have less cold tolerance than you which may be because I don't work as hard so I generate less heat. So I'm sometime using using a 1.5 mm Neosport long sleeve under a 3 mm long john and a dry top over that. if it is a little warmer I wear a splash top which comes off a lot easier. I regulate the temperature with a neoprene surf cap. If I over heat taking it off can cool me right down. When I swim ( which is often), it is quick to put on in the water. And finally I like pogies the best even with a single blade. They are just that much warmer. The one I like are really short with no real sleeve so they are easy in and easy out. When my hands get warm I can just slide them to the middle of the paddle.
@barryblackburn5910

@FrankLadd 3 года назад
@@barryblackburn5910 IR microwave handwarmers. Crazy expensive these days. I might just buy a longer neoprene pair for half of that and cut them down. The short ones are easy in and out but seem just as warm for me.

@@barryblackburn5910 I used to live in Cambridge, racing on the Cam. Winter weather - ice on the decks and paddles, skim on ice on the water. The Cam is shallow, so cools down rapidly. For race training, we'd wear something like tracksuit or running leggings on bottom, a couple of thin layers on top with a cag. Pogies on hands. A spraydeck helps a lot to keep legs warm. Most people have bare feet (because it is difficult to fit booties in a race boat). I now live in Scotland, on the Outer Hebrides. Sea water isn't any colder than Cambridge, due to the Gulf Stream. Winter water temp about 4C (but can be much colder, we have a skim of sea ice in the lochs right now). Air temp is hovering around freezing, and winds average force 4 (average - so peaks of force 6-8 are very common). People commonly wear drysuits with wool or fleece underneath. The financially challenged will wear wetsuits layered up with a cag.

Thanks for the info! I just ordered a changing mat. I’m in Rhode Island and this is the first winter I’ve paddled. I have a dry suit because the water is 42. We’re going out today on SUPs because there’s no wind but it will only get up to 25F today. We’re not surfing - paddling in a calm inlet. With a dry suit the challenge can be to understand base layers because it’s easier to overheat and sweat which makes me colder faster. The other issue is keeping my feet warm. The dry suit has integral dry socks (very key) but it’s been hard to find the right base layer that won’t constrict movement (base layer, dry suit sock, bootie) and will keep my feet dry. Your daughter’s booties looked thick and warm. Are they a special winter boot? Have you tried any socks that you would recommend?

My buddy Rod paddled in his dry suit sometimes. I’m hoping he will chime in.

Hey Carole, Rod here. The feet are the toughest puzzle, for sure, when paddling in a drysuit, I think. My drysuit does not have integral dry socks, so my experience may be different from yours, but I usually ensure my booties are a bit loose (like a half size or full size too big) -- I found that tight booties would restrict blood flow, and my feet got even colder. I've used thin smart wool socks inside the booties, and that has worked pretty well. My favorite combination is a thin neoprene sock inside the booties -- I rarely feel the cold at all with that combination. I also have a pair of 7mm booties that are very warm, but I start to lose a lot of "feel" in those, so I only break those out on the coldest days. Circle back to us when you work out the foot puzzle --- it would be great to hear what works for you!
