This video reminds me of that time a few months ago where a lightning strike took out our TV, satellite + cable TV STB, Apple TV and the WAN port on the router. They were all connected to a Belkin surge protector. Guess it was too strong for it. Had to get a new set of AV equipment. And a new surge protector that offers more protection than the one before. Tripp-lite surge protectors seem to work out really well for many.

Entirely. It really needs a redo/update at this point. It makes no mention at all of the other type of surge protectors that offer FAR more protection than the MOV ones he's covering in this video: Series mode, inductance-based surge protectors like the ones from SurgeX, BrickWall and Audioquest. Those are much more expensive, of course, but they can take surges up to 6000v/3000A several thousand times over without having to be replaced.

I love your videos, the quick format is great! I have three questions 1. What if you chain several surge protectors together? what happens if they are not identical in terms of clamping voltage or joule rating? 2. If you have a power conditioner, and a surge protector, and a UPS is there a sequence which they would most optimally be chained? 3. Will using a surge-protector, with a power conditioner on the same breaker allow a surge that is safely shunted to ground, to re-enter the electrical wiring through the power conditioners softer interface with the shared ground? is that a thing? like aaaa ground loop of death!...?. 4. BONUS QUESTION! what about a really, really,... ReALLy.... BiG magnet!

Okay, so the answer to this is actually a gray area. In physics, electrons travel from negative to positive. This is the actual way electricity flows. But, electrical engineers write wiring diagrams and understand semiconductors under the assumption that electricity goes from positive to negative. Either way is fine and it really just depends on the environment.

The power strip surge protector is helpful as it gives some protection, and if there is a nearby storm you can unplug just the power strip, and not have to individually unplug the TV, and the Cable box, and the Game console, and the Sound System.
@kctyphoon
@kctyphoon 4 месяца назад
I had no idea that a surge protected power strip would still work after a power surge. The joule rating is cumulative. It can be used up over 10 years in 100 small surges, or all at once. But if you CANT SEE the indicator light, or your surge protector doesnt have an aubile alarm, youd never know it wasnt working anymore. I just lost my washer and dryer from damage to my power line from a storm and a surge protector that was likely no longer working. Hower my 86" tv and home theater was likely saved from a new surger protector with a high joule rating i bought last year. That thing popped so loud i heard it happen and could see the glow from the indicator light went off under my media console. I immediately unplugged all that.

So how DO you protect your electronics from lightning strikes? (For the general user)
@gravejames7221
@gravejames7221 Год назад
so here is basically the summary. don't use a surge protector because they likely will stop being useful after a couple surges, and you have to physically unplug it anyway after that, so...why not just unplug the electronics during storms. kinda defeats the purpose. don't use UPS system back up power supplies because they need to be powered on constantly and charge constantly even when off and make your power bill go up. some of them also beep and make noise. so basically what it comes down to is....just. DONT use anything. its best to keep an eye on the weather and unplug during bad storms or just keep UPS power supply unplugged and only plug it in and plug stuff into during bad storms to be prepared. there is no easy way to deal with this issue apparently. everything requires you to physically keep an eye on things and unplug or plug things.

Actually, just to correct something (maybe it is true for North America, I don't know), but here in Australia, we have powerboards (what north americans call powerstrips) which come with surge protectors built into them, the cheap ones are only good for 1 surge, but they do exist. Another good thing we have over here is that most home insurances come with burnt motor protection, so if a surge fries the motor in say your vacuum cleaner, the insurance company will replace it

Whole house surge protectors/suppressors work best (one can add point of use surge protectors as a second line of defense if desired). Whole house units don't cost that much and do a much better job than fancily-packaged point of use units.
@michaelbeckerman7532
@michaelbeckerman7532 Год назад
Not actually true. A whole-house surge protector normally has a much higher clamping/let-through voltage point than an individual device surge protector does. Because of this, you always want to take a layered approach to surge protection. Never rely on just a whole-house surge protector by itself. It's a good idea to have one at your service panel, for sure, but you should also have individual device surge protection on each of your high-value electronics as well. Keep in mind here that surges can actually come from inside the house (washers and dryers, furnaces, AC systems, garbage disposals, lighting systems, etc.) as well as from outside. Studies have shown that roughly 80% of all surges experienced at a site originate from on-premise equipment. This is why individual surge protectors are still very important, even when a whole-house surge protection device is in place.

good video .. i did learn a little about surge protectors that I didn't know but .... your little graphic with the negative and positive and the (what looks like a representation of) electrons is backwards. Electrons which are the partials that "carry" electricity are negatively charged. A negative terminal has more electrons and the positive terminal has fewer therefor electricity moves from negative to positive because it always tries to "even out". Going from positive to negative is a common misconception ... maybe because everyone sees circuits terminating at ground which is negative they assume that ground is where the electricity "stops" .. lol other than that .. I did like the video ... just thought I would point that out :)

I think using surge protectors in my house might be a moot point then. All my outlets only have two prongs. They don't have the 3rd. We did change out a 220 outlet for a 110. So far nothing has fried. Though my speaker do make a weird popping noise when the fridge kicks on or off. So far between power strips, surge protectors, and UPSs I like UPSs the best. The battery only lasts a few years. Yet they keep the random power outages from corrupting installs and upgrades on the PCs. To bad I am slowly building a stack of dead batteries in the garage though. I don't know of any place that will properly dispose of them here.

Linus didn't cover the surge protector on/off switch. These are set to TURN OFF if a certain amount of voltage is reached and this stops an electric flow. At least that is how the surge protectors in m country work. The 3 prong explaination is not an option in most places in m country. if there is a 3rd prong, i useually use a 3 to 2 prong adapter because no outlets have 3 prongs. So I guess my point is surge protectors work for surges by TURNING OFF the power and stopping current from anything plugged into it from deliverying current until the button is reset. Anyway I dont understand why Linus didn't mention this.
