I am not saying that its wrong to treat someone bad . But Murphy is coddled and he also rushed into a surgery on the first episode which is not allowed but got away with it. And also this is a drama so I am not shocked that because the show is about Shaun he wins.

He's "pampered" because he has autism and needs a different set of social cues and environment... Have you read the ada before?

He discriminated against a neurodivergent person. He made career choices for said neurodivergent person (an employer can not legally change an employer's profession against the employer's wishes, but Dr Han put Shaun from surgery into pathology against Shaun's expressed wishes. An employer can advise you to change professions, and help you do it if the employee ageees, but they can not just do it on their own as Han did. So yes, he did quite a bunch of things wrong.

Shaun, by this point, was very well able to handle the situation. He just had his weak points, but so did everybody else. But instead of helping Shaun deal with his weaknesses (or OFFERING a change in position), he was discriminated against and forced into changing careers. Han manipulated the situation to force Shaun out, he wanted to fire him from the start but couldn't legally yet. So he pushed until he got his way.

@@l0sts0ul89 but it's a more signifcant issue with those on the spectrum, thus it's considered a special need. Their emotions are often amplified by a fixation trigger. Their impulses and habits are also affected by fixation triggers. Autistic people's fixation triggers are all different, but work in similar ways when active. If you have someone who's trigger focuses on one's wrongdoings or mistakes, frustration builds up at an accelerated rate in comparison to neurotypical people. Meaning the potential for an emotional outburst/meltdown is higher as well, and because of the fixation trigger amplifying what they feel, their brain will send more irrational signals the the body that correspond to whatever emotion they're feeling, making them appear more "animated" with their visual expressions. Imagine an animated expression of frustration and anger coming out of a surgeon that is operating on you and they start getting violent. The likelihood of that happening from an Autistic person vs. a Neurotypical one is higher, and thus feared more by the general public. This series is just propaganda to dissipate that stigma around Autistic doctors.

Just because Shaun is on the spectrum doesn’t mean he “deserves” to be fired from a job that he LOVES and is good at.. they allow people with anger issues or disorders to be doctors but when autism is announced somehow he’s not capable of being a doctor? Have you actually watched the show to determine that Shaun never killed a patient with his outburst?

I'm also on the spectrum but I'm a very mild case and I fully agree with you. This show is a nice one to watch if your not here for realism, but no hospital would ever hire Shaun irl because he is a walking courtroom with how many lawsuits he would cause. I would never trust someone this obviously on the spectrum to be my surgeon, because you can't trust even a well adjusted autistic that far on the spectrum not to have a outburst if they are in a high stress environment, It just has way to much risk for them to hurt others or themselves. I like I said am a very mild case with all verbal communication fine but emotionally I'm hit-or-miss, with a spotty understanding of how to react to other people's emotions and a tendency to spiral into a emotional nosedive of whatever I'm feeling. A example is once my mom dropped a lit cigarette on the floor partway under her bed, and my first reaction was "fire! Need to pour water on it!" It hadn't did anything yet but I was a screaming, crying, panicking mess after my mom wouldn't let me pour water on it because of our weak flooring. I then proceeded to physically hurt myself throwing myself under the metal bedframe trying to grab it so it "wouldn't burn the house down" despite the fact it had gone out by this point. Someone who has Shaun's levels of communication and emotional difficulties is a very big risk in ANY mildly stressing job, let alone one where he is elbows deep in a person's insides sometimes multiple times a day.

It's why I hate Autistic rep in media. It's either Sheldon/ABed/Shaun/House, where they are know it all jerks but because they are almost always right, they get away with the bad behaviour. In real life, us autistic people ae usually way off with a situation.

Have ADHD (seen as the kissing cousin of autism) and I have them too. Had one a few days ago in a supermarket. It wasn't huge, thank goodness. I'd become overwhelmed because a shop assistant was confusing me and didn't answer a simple question. It didn't make sense what she was saying. It triggered a small meltdown

ok so those things do happen but also those things for many people if the people around him know what not to do that wont cause him to get triggered. i know for some people its routine, some people its extreme situations that he doesnt know how to react. shaun didnt like being told no or ignored and learn to work with it in the show. having to deal with those thiings while shauns savant syndome cause him to have the best doctor minds that he could understand quickly. shaun can understand reality as long as he is caused to go haywired. if u told me you for other people need to learn things not to do when a certain person is invloved but the trade off of the great surgeon minds u could have due to how his mind worked. that is a trade off that any hospital should make. having a higher up refusing to treat him like he should be treated caused many times where he was right even in very rare cases that not a single person in the building would thought of. ive only watch some of the show but they way he had his mind work is actually a reality for a lot of people who are autistic but its going to be random that they can learn. ive seen some kids on youtube have the most random perfect set of skill but it can be something useless for the most part but it is still impressive and allows him to be able to understand praise because of many of them misunderstand emotions properly without a lot of help

Saw people say “the outbursts proved Han right. Except. (not an amazing comparison but I feel it works) You can’t provoke an animal by poking at it where you know it bothers them. then they lash out. And then say “this animal is aggressive.”

It was heavily implied that Han was prejudiced due to some kind of an experience with an autistic person in the past who had ended up dying.

Shaun had multiple freak outs before that. That's not Shaun being provoked, that's a well know trigger being addressed. Shaun should have been moved out of the OR until he could get some better personal skills or he should have looked for a field where he wasn't endangering patients life in the middle of surgery. I'm autistic and my rights only extend so far as they infringe on someone else. Shaun Infringes on a lot of people and makes autistic people look like we're all idiot savants, when most autistic people just have the behaviour problems, not the savant part.

In more recent years it happened only once when Shaun was literally in charge of a mass casualty event and had literally 5 different people yelling at him at once to solve their problems for them. After using the same trick he does to figure out how to treat a patient he found solutions for every single one of them in moments.

That should have been used more, especially this season to show he has overcome most of these things and that Dr Han was completely in the wrong about it. It came across completely differently for me because I had honestly forgotten that episode. This season should have reinforced how far Shaun has come and that he has overcome most of his issues.

When I was 15 I had a doctor tell me I needed a in room prosecute. It was one I hated, and dressed over every time I needed it. I started panicking, and the doctor threatened to remove my parents from the room,, and hold me down in order to do the procedure.

Doctors like that shouldn’t even be doctors to begin with if they’re gonna be complete ass holes towards the people they’re supposed to be helping 😡

Yeah I agree. I think Andrews had a similar argument to Han at the start of the show but after seeing what Shaun could do for himself, he became one of Shaun's closest friends and defenders. He also knew not to coddle Shaun and respected him enough to treat Shaun just like anyone else.

He's saying if he can't have control over his own staff, then he can't work there. As in if he sees that someone is causing an issue, then he needs to be able to fire them. If a surgeon freaks out during a surgery and walks out then he needs to be able to say you can't continue to do this. He's the bad guy not because he's Right about Shawn but because of how he treats not just Shawn but everyone else. He blackmails people to get malpractice charges dropped, he intentionally disturbs surgeries that he is not part of to "help" by distracting the head surgeon at the time with stupid questions not about the surgery which could have caused issues, he doesn't correct any of the residents properly (he tells them they made a mistake and instead od going over how to fix it or what they should have done instead he verbally derives them into thinking they shouldn't have tried to begin with) He's a problem in a lot of ways for the hospital as a whole. Not just Shawn.

@@kyleellis1825 I think it's unfair to label the character as a savant. Because while he is especially strong in an area, it doesn't mean he is not aware of his intersocial deficits. All autistic people are different from one another. I have emotional breakdowns sometimes and am not in control. I am at Autism's swaying clutches. I never said that poor behavior should be swept under the rug, but I think some behavior is categorized as poor or disruptive when it's simply different. Being different and having different ways of communication doesn't necessarily make the character problematic. And always viewing an autistic person as the problem in a neurotypical society is problematic all by itself. The same way there is understanding and grace applied in a neurotypical's actions, they can be applied when a neurodivergent isn't their best self. And as a final note, if an autistic person is displaying behavior that is not conducive to the environment, it can always be communicated. Autistic people are smart and we see things differently, so communicating that difference can be hard, but it isn't impossible. I find there's a lot of understanding between neurotypicals, but not much understanding is given when there's a neurodivergent involved. It's easier to label us as problematic or incapable than learning a variety of communication tactics and de-escalation. why is the burden of proof always on the autistic person and never taken as a group effort to diversify the modus operandi of a company and improve the communications of workers by requiring the multi-faceted intelligence of working with neurodivergent that can only prepare someone for being able to communicate with anyone and everyone well.

I think you're wrong. The show has clearly demonstrated what Shaun has added to the team, and how much he's evolved as an autistic man. Requiring him to behave as others is ridiculous when "others" are all kinds of "otherwise" screwed up themselves (without autism to blame).

Claire and Glassman were the only ones who ever really coddled him. Morgan has always been blunt, and straight with Shaun along with Andrews. Park, and Lim know how Shaun is and know when he needs help (coddled) and when to treat him like an equal

100% agree Dr Han utilised Shaun’s skills in a way that it was advantageous to the hospital and the patients. The only problem was that Shaun wanted to be a surgeon and I think that’s where Dr Han screwed up. He should have continued to allow Shaun to be in operating rooms but work in pathology, in this way it’s a compromise and Shaun might have accepted.

I had a physician who was on the spectrum. He was incredibly nice and kind and comforting but straightforward. He was a resident and was going over the surgery I was to have, I also have had a neurological person with very high IQ and was a horrible surgeon and horrible with patient care

But wouldn't there potentially be other issues involved besides lowering the table? Since Shawn in this hypothetical scenario would be confined to a wheelchair, what if he had difficulty reaching over to a certain part of the patient's body from where he was? Would you expect him to wheel around the table to get to that part? Or any other issues that could potentially affect his ability operate where he needs to. While I suppose the other staff would have to work harder to accommodate him, it could easily snowball into a bigger problem. Patients can and will sue the hospital because "the surgeon was not only emotionally compromised but physically compromised". They'll ask why was he put in the OR in that situation to begin with? Just something to think about.

I dont see how just asking for assistance more and moving when needed would lead to a bigger problem? As for the patients sueing, yes that is true, but that would be discrimination wouldnt it? and cause of laws to protect others from that the patient suing is less likely to win. after all like shawn hypothetically the answer would be, "because they are good at what they do" I appreciate your opinion and thought experiment though :)
