Join Terry Malort as he walks us through the newest member of our steel family, Preamble. In short, Preamble is the Surly pavement and gravel bike that has all the features you need, and nothing you don’t. This is a great “first real bike” for riders new to the bike world as well as the two-wheel veterans who know exactly what they need and what they don’t need. Commute on it. Ride no hands on that bike path you love so much. Join that gravel group ride on Saturday before brunch. Whatever your fancy, Preamble will get you there with a smile on your face and a few dollars left in your Velcro billfold.
For all the steely details, head on over to our website: surlybikes.com...

Great bike Surly!!!!!! This is my go to bike (and I have many bikes) it is a great value, a blast to ride, and the ride quality from the steel frame is superb!! I’ve been riding the flat bar version for about a year and I am a seasoned bicyclist, been a serious mtb rider since 1987, I’ve always wanted a Surly and this bike does not disappoint. Sure the components are lower end, but expected at this price point. The frame and geometry is awesome. I ride it mostly on sidewalks and some dirt roads and it is a great bridge between a mtb and road bike. Durable enough for unban sidewalk and curbs and dirt/gravel roads.

Spent about 500 miles on it and so far so good. ru-vid.comUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA Pros:1. Very light2. Solid quality build3. Fast delivery: It arrived 5 weeks earlier than expected.4. Easy assemblyJust a few cons but nothing major:1. Cheap tin tubes and had flat on first day... but not a big deal. I replaced the tubes.2. Seat is a bit uncomfortable but that's pretty much the same situation with most bikes.3. Seat post is a bit long/high for a smaller size 48 bike - had to saw 2 inch off to fit properly. The lowest setting is too high. The post locking system does not seem to hold well (perhaps because I saw 2 inch off).4. wheels are not tubeless compatible (from what I can tell)

Not seeing a lot of mounting points for what would otherwise look like an awesome bikepacking bike. Gearing is also lacking for serious gravel or singletrack riding, and the bike looks like it would be a really great gravel bike despite the marketing as a commuter
@MSUTri
@MSUTri Год назад
Uh, bikepacking is what the Bridge Club, Ogre, Ghost Grappler, and Krampus are for? And what the discontinued Pugsley, ECR, and Troll were for. Since bikepacking is primarily off road, and most of the time, you want bigger than 41 mm tires for that... But for on road and gravel/hardpack two track bicycle touring, this seems like a fine choice. It's got the most important bosses - for front and rear racks, and a couple of water bottle mounts. They didn't go crazy on the mounts, or give full range gearing, since that's what the more expensive bikes are for - and that's why those bikes are more expensive, too. That said, I do think the gearing range on the drop bar bike is disappointing for the price. The flat bar bike seems to be a much better value.

@MSUTri
@MSUTri Год назад
@@cyclingvideoesIt's a Surly. They're overbuilt and very conservative with their ratings. I know they said "loads of 5 to 30 pounds" in the video, but they may in effect just be referring to the capacity of the 8 Pack Rack (30 pounds) that they show being used. They don't show the total weight capacity of the bike in their specs yet. I'm sure it's a fine choice for light to medium duty paved and gravel road/two track touring, with racks or rackless. It's rated for condition 2 riding, after all. In fact, it's probably better for that than just about any other bike in this price category. It's just probably not the best choice for heavy duty expedition 'everything but the kitchen sink' touring.

I am glad to see that Surly at least admits that QR dropouts for bike with disc brakes is not what 95% of the market is doing: "There are folks who will ask: “why QR hubs?”. I’ll counter, why thru-axle hubs? Yep. Really. Why? (editor's note: Atom is clearly being a bit of a devil’s advocate here, but we get to an interesting point, so we left it in) I am not saying that one system is better, or worse. There are no flaws being lobbied. If you’re building a suspension frame, thru-axles are great. On a suspension fork, thru-axles yes please. Measurable improvement. On a wide-hub-spaced fat bike, laced to a big o’ rim and a giant tire, yes, thru-axles have a measured improvement in the bike as a system. And for the experience the rider has." Surly's fetish with dropouts is well known, but seriously... can you still buy disc wheels with QR ?? Most disc wheels have thru-axle hubs nowadays, as far as I know.

It's harder to find pre-built QR/Disc wheels, but I built a new set for the Straggler last year and a new front wheel for the Ogre while I was at it. No problems finding parts. (Convertible hubs make it easy to swap between bikes, too.) Still possible.
