Welcome to episode 5 of the second season of our series on the Surnames of Appalachia and the South. For those of you searching for earlier videos, please write to me at vanntagepoint22@gmail.com, and I will send you a catalog that lists each name and the episode in which it was covered. On today’s episode, we’ll investigate six more names that were requested by people just like you. If you are new to the channel, I try to mix in a bit of history and trivia along with the origin and meaning of the surnames because we share many cultural traits and identities with long dead people who never saw the land of the free and the home of the brave. I hope you’ll join me.

Interesting. I also learned just last week that the Appalachian way continues in Britain and North Western France because they were once all part of the same mountain range. It is a small world.

Just found this. My genes on my fathers maternal side, we could only go back so far with her, then picked up the paternal side. Women were property so could only get so far maternally. Brown was the paternal name that came over from Scotland in the mid 1600's to North Carolina. Do know he bought a mountain in tn. The brown cemetery is there.

I have found that most names in the south originate from British origins, i.e., Scotch-Irish (Appalachia), English, and Welsh. In the case of the Welsh, they're pretty easy to identify. Look for an "S" at the end of the name; Jones, Williams, Edward's, Evans, Davis, Thomas, James, Roberts, Phillips, etc. Or, look for double-consanents like the name Llewlyn, Lloyd, etc.
@BarryVann

That's who came here. They weren't Russians, Italians, and mystery people from Turkey or Portugal. We were a British colony for a reason.

Thank you for another informative episode. It’s fascinating to me that our histories can be traced back to the earliest Colonial days of the United States. I would love to search for my ancestors in England and Scotland, but I think I’m getting too old to pursue that now, and, sadly my children are not as interested in genealogy as I. I enjoy your programs very much.

Gracie, it's always a pleasure to hear from you. What's sad is that many Scots and English people don't appreciate that our ancestors were their ancestors' kin and neighbors.

Thank you dr Barry for your wonderful cultural documentary channel. One of Arabic subscribers said you are learning better than university students , because you are subscriber to several British and American RU-vid channels. She is absolutely right when she told me that interesting fact . I gathered meaning and origin of surnames you mentioned briefly here it’s jacobs is from the Hebrew yaaqov , Jacan can mean “ to follow, behind “ , but it can also mean “ supplant , overreach “ or come from Hebrew word for “ heel “ . It can also mean “ May god protect “ . All are based on the biblical story of Jacob . The name of Coleman is Irish and English origin. The Irish surname is derived from the Irish colmain, o clumhain , or mac colmain. Goff is the welsh gof and the Breton Goff means “ smith “ . The English- originating surname is common in East Angila , where it is of Breton origin. The welsh surname is variant surname gough , and is derived from a nickname from someone with red hair . The ball is thought to be English. It’s believed to be a patronymic name. It would have been given to those who were the son or descendants of ( Baldwin ) or ( bald ) the diminutive form of this name , common Anglo- Norman name . Mutter is south German ( also mutter ) : occupational name for an official employed to measure grain , from Middle High German mutte ( bushel , grain in measure ) ( from Latin modius ) +the agent suffix er . English mainly Devon and some rest and , Scottish: variant mutter 1and 2 . Amber etymology: the English word amber derived from Arabic anber ( ultimately from Middle Persian) via middle Latin amber and Middle French ambre. The name Anber originated from Latin Medieval Latin offers to both the petrified region to the yellow and reddish brown color of the gemstone. In modern Hebrew it’s means a granary or treasury. I hope you like my research. Best wishes for you your dearest ones.

Is Cullman the same derivation as Colman/Coleman? Goff reminded me of Bob Goff, a college friend at UVa. I have a favorite story about Bob, but won't burden you with telling it here. He is one of those (semi-annoying !) people with the uncanny ability to rapidly pick up the ability to play musical instruments with no previous contact.

Richard, you are the second person to inquire about Spurlock. It doesn't appear any records until the late 1800s in the USA. Some sources point to Somerset England and the name Porlock. I can't confirm or refute that claim.
