I live in Nova Scotia Canada and That's the only motor I run. They've been working well for me all year round. I run the 540 due to the space I have to work with and it is the best bang for your buck.
Good video Thanx for the good quality, accurate info and showing either off the versatility of a good brushed motor. Your videos are very constant and sequencing is great.
I've been using Surpass Hobbies 4370kv brushless combos in my bashers for the past 3 years and they're awesome! I've also got a couple of brushed ones like you've shown on my crawlers, also great. Good economical alternative. Thanks for all of your videos!
Been using the 540 35t and 45t from Surpass, they both work great for my needs, no signs of failures 2 years later. (although they're more like half years, i don't crawl in the winter). One thing these motors don't like is water and mud in the brushes. Fortunately you can sandpaper the brushes and comm. if that happens and restore the motor.
Great vid dude. I don't know much about motors, but I guess 5 slots make a difference cause when Holmes said I'd be OK with a 10T in my Bronco I thought they were nuts but it worked good.
Watching a lot of your vids. Like the Surpass review, may try one in my Gen 7.85! But the weather? Just stop! LoL. StL for me. Only worked 4 weeks since October and that was a heated inside remodel. Back to work today. Outside. 33 when I left the house at 6:30. 22 and falling at 7:30, dropping to 5 tonight with a high of maybe 20 tomorrow and windy. I've spent some time in FL. Pretty nice. Because the humidity is lower there year round than StL. Our average is 98.5% if it is 4 or 104 degrees. It is a wet cold or hot! LoL Keep the vids coming!
I am running it in a TRX-4 Blazer as well with th HW WP-1080 ESC and it works perfect. It seems like an other modell. A friend with a stock Bronco is in every situation behind.
Ah so you got one! Happy to see that you liked it. I got mine on Banggood, I think it was about 20$ shipped, crazy! Outside of the US it's hard to get Holmes motors for a fair price, at least where I live. If you find one it's shamelessly overpriced. And anyway you know with mud motor is going to give and let the magic smoke out (especially with rebuild-able motors I hear), so you want to buy many and cheap (I love mud, a lot). So I think I'll stick to this one. If I can get inspired enough I might build my own ESC though. The HW 1080 is not bad, but I don't like their freewheeling and drag brake. The freewheeling is inconsistent (sometimes it doesn't kick in) and I would like more control on the drag brake, which I can do if I program my own. We will see.
I ordered it for my gen7 but im curious to see how it would do in my stampede🤔 BTW thank you for being like the only person to make a video on this motor
Both of my Surpass Hobbies motors died. One was a brand new installed on Arrma Senton along with HobbyWing ESC. There was no hardcore bashing or running on 3S. The drive shaft broke up after ten rides. The motor from the video lasted longer on my Redcat Gen 8 Scout II (version one). As a second owner, I cannot confirm what exactly the previous owner did with a truck. I did some water and mud runs. Don't want to touch this brand again. My stock Spectrum BLX motor on Arrma Outcast 6S serves with no problem in winter, autumn, or summer.
I'm running the 12t version of this motor in my TRX-4 on 4s and it does alright. Running under drive gears in both axles and a 9t pinion as well and you can get away with trailing every in high gear 95% of the time, and drop to low when in technical sections and rocks. I'm going to add a 550 sized sleeve / toque / flux ring thing to see what impact that has on it.
please review the new one: surpass hobby rocket crawler 540 w/ 5 slot skew and 4 pole strong magnet.hope you will test the esc too, they sell combo too..thank you so much
Thanks for the info on motor options.. I have seen the surpass brand in the RC store I go to.. They actually had 1800kv and 2300kv sensored crawler motors last time I was there. I think they were $100-ish Australian.. so about $70 usd at a guess. I have to pick something up for a vs410ultra I'm impatiently waiting for to arrive. Bloody shipping. Lol. Cheers mate 👍
@@ExocagedRC I'll probably just get another axe for the ultra, as I just like em and good value for money combo. On another subject, are the 2.2's on your comp 3 the xl size? I've got a set of proline swampers I got for a bomber I've since sold. Was wanting to build a truck using something like that whiskey chassis and "EXO" printed parts kit and use those 2.2's but they are 5.75 and look massive.
i run 10t 550 holmes crawlmaster sport with 12tooth pinion and holy shit it has some torque and pep. i think i may gear down bit more to a 10tooth (scx10iii bronco)
So what was the speed of the original motor setup and did you run a bigger pinion over the original 13tooth? Really wanna know as I'm looking at this motor for a granite brushed motor upgrade
@@bkorules Tonight's forecast where I live (in metric) Periods of snow ending late this evening then clearing. Wind northwest 20 km/h gusting to 40 becoming light after midnight. Low minus 25. Wind chill minus 11 this evening and minus 34 overnight. Risk of frostbite.
Are you using the 1080 with the 10t? The paperwork with the 1080 says 16t max on 3s. But I'm running that 12t titan with no probs. I've heard a 5 slot is more forgiving on turn ratio? If you have time I'd love to see what you think of the titan motor in the gen8. Keep these awesome vids coming! Thanks bro
The titan motors are reverse rotation so they aren't very well suited for the Gen8 which uses a normal rotation motor. Yeah 5 slots are lower KV than the 3 slots, the 10t like this is about the same rpm as a 21t titan or another 3 slot motor. Nothing got past warm on the motor or esc for this.
Paul Clancy yeah compared to the sealed can motors yeah I’d take this one for sure. Bearings at both ends, replaceable brushes, adjustable timing yeah that does it for me
@@ExocagedRC ty sir which esc do think is better stock axial or stock gen8 I only bought one hw 1080 so far going use one rtr one temporarily sorry all questions 🚗🚗🙂
Anyone wondering about the 540 motor from surpas hobby it is good I have one in my gen 8 it’s smaller and really slow best for crawling it dose not get hot no rebuild required overall it’s alright I did not read if it was a550 or 540 so I have a 540
I saw your shadow there, and you holding the camera and driving one handed. I recently purchased sunglasses that have a camera built in. Makes it much easier to drive the RC and just look at it, in stead of trying to drive and keep camera pointed at the subject. Just saying!
Yeah sometimes I mess up while talking driving walking and recording at the same time, then again sometimes it’s like my recording hand is the perfect gyro LoL.
Hi thanks for the video, I have a question what do you think about Axial AM27 27T 540 , just for having a backup one for my gen8, I'm using the stock one.
Hey there my First Crawler has the Hobbywing 1080 in it with a Robitronic 55T Motor. I want to Build a Second one. Should i go for the TRX 4 Standart Electronic or should i go with the same Setup or should i go with the AXE FOC Sensored Motors? i have no plan :D thx alot
i just did an overhaul on my gen 8 i put nnew bearings on and the red cat aluminum c hubs and portal boxes it just seems like mine doest turn as tight anymore after installing the red cat aluminum
Can you help me understand the turns of motors as they relate to crawling performance. When I was building my TRX4 Sport Kit everyone told me to get 21 or 27t but now I’m seeing more folks use lower turn motors. I’m interested in trying one, but kinda unsure. Thoughts?
This is a 5 slot motor. Most motors like they were telling you to use is correct. The 5 slot are slower than 3 slot. Slots are the ferrite armature where the windings are. So a 10t 5 slot is about the same as a 21t 3 slot but better low end control.
Exocaged RC Bangood is selling this 10T 550 Surpass crawler motor with a wired ESC for under $40 and they’ve got a program card for $8 to set the drag brake correctly. I’m considering building an Element Enduro Kit going lightweight with the Creep body and my takeout foams from my Predator Krawlers on my unused TRX4 wheels and barely used tires.
Surpass is 5 slot. The trailmaster you reference is 3 slot. Both have similar rpms. I’d probably go Surpass but you can also get the Crawlmasters from Holmes in 10t and even 8t at about $20. Any of those will work great
They have a hand wound version with skewed armature, gold plated solder tabs, big rotor and four super thin magnets for 40$, it seems very good, could you test it (and compare it to the CM magnum)?
Idaho RC guy yeah I didn’t bother much with that for video, this was just the other day I recorded this d as best I can tell it was about average, like any 550 size motor. Don’t recall it being noticeably different. Now as compared to the stock motor I’d have to say yeah it’s stronger in every possible way.
@@ExocagedRC what is the stock pinion and what do you recommend with the surpass hobby 550 10 or 12 turn? Do you have better low speed control than the stock Redcat with this motor?
Why is it that the axail 27t looks like it can go faster I have the scx10 II IT came with a 35t but to slow for me I do have a titan 12t XL5 and a HH trailmaster sport 550 21t Axail xl , don’t care much for rock crawling but needed a a trail rig , don’t need bat crazy speed
Running the 12T 550 5 slot surpass on my trx-4. Faster and slower than the traxxas titan 21T. Pairing it with the hobbywing 1080, super happy with it and I will be sticking with this setup for a while. Holmes motors are soooo over priced. just saying.
Roman Lastname I don’t think Holmes stuff is over priced. Most of it is really good stuff plus he designs them himself in house plus he has guys hand assembling them so there is quite a bit of hands on work that goes into the better motors above the sport series.
I run a surpass 10t 5-slot in my first generation scx10. It's significantly slower than the generic 550 3-slot 21t I had before. Surpass motor is probably not timed correctly. And the price was nearly the same as my genuine Holmes crawlmaster 13t 550. My gmade gs02f with crawlmaster 13t is significantly faster than the scx10 with surpass 10t and it's runs cooler. I'm definitely buying crawlmaster motors again. I'm not so sure the surpass has the same value. Only tested one battery on the surpass.
@@thor_4017 Sorry bud, you couldnt be more wrong. The surpass is a complete rebuildable motor with removable endbell. Adustable timing. The Holmes motor is just a rebranded chinese motor. There i said it. It's just a rebrand man. Come' on.
@@romanlastname4133 depends on where you got them I guess. Magnet quality and winding should be higher on the Holmes. Fake holmes motors is often sold on ebay. The rebuildable plastic endbell is what I usually destroy, overheat and melt. Motors without internal fan often runs to hot for my liking. My surpass 10t on scx10 run hotter and slower than my crawlmaster 13t on gs02f. My gs02f has heavy wheels with 110mm diameter tire. Scx10 has 148mm tires, aluminum wheels without weights. The speed was similar when I had 21t 550. My 10t 5-slot surpass feels slower than stock axial 27t 540 motor. This far I'm much more impressed by the crawlmaster sport. Timing is probably off on the surpass. I would have guessed it to be faster than it is. If I had esc reverse on 100% it would probably run faster in reverse.
I'm looking to put a new motor in my gen 7 it has the portals on it and the pinion and spur that come with the portal kit. I want your opinion on which motor to go with. Should I go with this motor or the holms hobby 21t.
Both are about the same speed. If you’re in the US I’d go with Holmes, if you’re outside the US then get the surpass. I’m not sure how quick you could even get the surpass imported at this time.
Same chinesium motor as many sub 20 bucks motors... They are rebranded to the death. They work fine until they dont which will mean you broke a commutator wire since they are not glued or epoxy'd to the stator.
55t 3 slot and 10t 5 slot, a 12t 3 slot is about the same in rpm as a 21t 3 slot. I highly recommend you go and watch and listen to Holmes explain why this is. look up Holmes Hobbies here on youtube, he is the master guru of these motors
