Surplus Metascope Infrared Viewer - US Navy Signal Device

I picked this thing up really cheap, thinking it was a morse code flasher light. It turns out it's something a little more rare, a "Metascope" from the US Navy. It used a light-charged phosphor screen and mirror system to detect infrared lights for night-time signaling. While the phosphor is sadly too decayed for it to function any more, it's a really cool piece of vintage tech! I had no idea these things even existed until I bought one!

Pretty sweet vintage tech, and it's good to see when things like this end up with people who actually appreciate them!

I don't know what's more impressive, the fact that you paid $12 for this, or the fact that you seem to know how to use every single thing you purchase. 😂

The P7 phosphor on my old 5FP7 radar tube exhibits an interesting effect when charged and then exposed to IR light. Charge it evenly and then let it sit for a few seconds while the glow still goes down. Then, with a TV remote hold it up to the screen and where the IR LED shines you will see the phosphor get a little brighter and glow brighter than the rest of the screen for a few seconds. You can do this for a total about about 30-60 second before the phosphor needs to be recharged again. After a few seconds of playing with this you will also notice that once the bright spot begins to dim down where the IR light was, it will get darker than the rest of the screen. What's happening is the IR light is making the phosphor give up it's charge faster than what it normally would. This is how these old meta-scopes work and there are lots of types of phosphors that can do this, some better than others. You have the type 'B' version. There's a video somewhere that explains what that means. I don't remember. The reason for the degraded phosphor in yours is because of exposure to moisture. The phosphor screen is a compressed 'puck' of the phosphor material they used. Normal techniques for phosphor coatings, such as what is used in CRTs, renders the IR effect inefficient on some phosphors, and completely useless on others.

It would be interesting to see if you could find a phosphor that would work well and build your own metascope.

Old top-secret stuff! I'd imagine that the phosphor chemical is still there, just oxidised... maybe scrape it off and cook it/renew it and re-apply it? The mirror looks interesting anyway.

Chat GPT: Fixing a cracked white phosphor screen on a metascope can be a bit tricky, but it's definitely doable. Here's a step-by-step guide: Assess the Damage: Before you start any repair work, carefully examine the extent of the crack. If it's minor, you may be able to repair it without drastic measures. If it's severe and affecting the functionality of the device, you might need to replace the screen entirely. Disassemble the Metascope: To access the screen, you'll need to disassemble the metascope carefully. Follow any manufacturer instructions or guides you have for disassembly to avoid causing further damage. Remove the Screen: Once you have access to the screen, carefully remove it from the device. Be gentle to avoid causing any additional damage. Scrape Off the White Phosphor: If the crack is confined to the white phosphor layer, you can try carefully scraping off the cracked portion using a small, sharp tool like a razor blade or a precision knife. Be very gentle to avoid damaging the underlying layers. Clean the Screen: After scraping off the cracked phosphor, clean the screen thoroughly using a soft cloth and a mild cleaning solution. Ensure that there are no residues left on the screen. Boiling Method (Optional): Some people suggest boiling the screen to remove the phosphor layer entirely. While this can work, it's a risky method as it can damage the underlying components if not done properly. If you choose to try this method, ensure that you use distilled water, avoid overheating, and monitor the process closely. Replace the Screen (if necessary): If the crack extends beyond the phosphor layer or if you're unable to repair it satisfactorily, you may need to replace the screen altogether. Contact the manufacturer or search for replacement parts online. Reassemble the Metascope: Once the screen is repaired or replaced, carefully reassemble the metascope following the disassembly steps in reverse order. Take your time to ensure everything fits back together correctly. Test the Device: After reassembly, test the metascope to ensure that the screen functions properly and that there are no issues with the repair. Seek Professional Help (if needed): If you're not comfortable performing the repair yourself or if the damage is extensive, consider seeking help from a professional technician who specializes in repairing electronic devices. I hope this helps

for Morse Code practice I recommend Morse Code Ninja or Begali's CW-Machine software if you're already wrapped up in Begali. At the end of the day just get your key out and hook it up to your radio with QSK off and you'll nail it down in weeks if not sooner. Practice with a straight key or a bug if you can it'll stick like riding a bike. Learn by ear with no visual aid or you'll wish you had soon enough. Dits and Dahs should start to sound like words by the time you're copying 20WPM.

Very nice machine. This one would have used an s-20 photocathode according to wiki. It seems that it is made largely of alkali metals and is sensitive to air. It looks like it no longer holds a vaccuum from the shredded phosphor. You would have to also replace the photocathode inside a vaccuum to save it if it is breached I believe. Maybe you could build a sputtering system? Glad you got something so cool for your museum :).
