Surprise Mayor has woman arrested for speaking out on city attorney's salary increase

A First Amendment advocacy group is preparing to sue Surprise, where a community activist was arrested at a City Council meeting after the mayor cut her off from speaking and had her removed.
The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression on social media that it would see Surprise in court on behalf of Rebekah Massie, the outspoken 32-year-old resident.

It's not the "Federal" Constitution, it's the United States Constitution. Ratified in 1788 by the Founding Fathers (Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams). Oath of Office to uphold and defend the (U.S.) Constitution. Censorship is prohibited at all levels of government. At no time does he does state when a person can complain about person, policy and salary. The Bill of Rights are the Checks and Balances against government authority.

​@@Skyenchantment8Because it violates a rule against this sort of speech. A public meeting is a limited public forum and not all content is Constitutionally protected. Even less content is protected here than in a non-limited public forum, such as a public sidewalk or plaza.

@@wynshiphillier313 I'm not. But I've seen this before. The police may or may not know the law in such cases; they're going to act as the person who signs their checks directs. After all, they have immunity. What makes me sure is that this citizen already has a deep pocket support org behind them. They have limited time and funds, and they don't take weak cases.

An aggressive lawsuit might single the cop out for personal liability, but it seems like any case that features that gets settled, so we never see a trial or appeals verdict.

Hall is so out of touch with reality. I hope this lady wins her case because she has a right to speak and be heard. Hall this is still USA. I am very surprised that the chief authorized the officer took her into custody. She is correct taxpayers pay for the very building they occupy and should have a say. He could have simply stated they would take her complaint into consideration. He should have then sent her to an authority to go over her claim and data. These officials are getting way to heavy handed.

If that's the case, then good for her. Civil disobedience should be praised and respected. It is absurd that it's "against the rules" to literally speak out against a Government official. This is the USA, born out of Revolution against the King.

i just wish she wouldn't have flipped out at the end.Regardless,it is going to cost her some coin if she pursues. Empty threats are just that.

Now forcing her to leave the meeting was one thing, but having her arrested? Not smart...she will certainly enjoy her new car she is going to buy with the settlement money...
