Even those who live by faith experience doubt, but it doesn't have to end your faith. Drawing from years of guiding Christians through doubt and disillusionment, Joshua Chatraw combines pastoral care and intellectual rigor to address the emotional journey of doubt, offering a new perspective on living a life of faith alongside it. In this breakout session from TGC23, Chatraw and Jack Carson discuss these themes based on their book, 'Surprised by Doubt.'

My goodness! What mental gymnastics to explain the dark night of the soul. What wordy explanations about a way back . Surely there is no other way than ' though he slay me, yet will I trust in the Lord'. That does not discount the enormity of the struggle and the great leap to grasp by our fingertips Jesus hand through the storm.

Faith is the gift of God it does not come to you by the power of Reason, if I believe by the power of Reason then I will disbelieve by the power of Reason, but reason is not the power of faith, the spirit is, for those who doubt they do not believe so how can you say that you have faith when you do not believe, how can you say you are a Believer when you do not believe, you contradicting the word faith and your contradicting the word believe, to have faith is to trust to believe is to believe, your words come out of one who does not believe not one who does, in my faith I have never disbelieved nor have I ever doubted, no matter what suffering I have suffered no matter what suffering I see in the world, no matter what reason shall come to me that I should not believe I believe because I simply believe, and no one can take this belief away from me, so why is it so easily taken from you, if a man is born of light how can he not believe in the light, when the light is his faith, when the light is his belief, you have to remove the light for him to doubt, reason does not tell me Christ rose from the dead Faith does, those who believe in the Christ never doubt but those who do not believe doubt, then there is only one conclusion, you have no light.

When I rejected the faith of my childhood in the 80s it was because I wanted to live a sinful lifestyle. I had to come to the end of myself. I would think that’s a common pattern.

I experienced that as well as a young person, but I wouldn’t call that deconstruction. That was rebellion. Since then, I’ve gone back to church. I have been on a deconstruction journey for the past three years. I will definitely stay in the faith, but I do feel our churches have much to answer for and they have failed in their mission to be the body of Christ in the world, they’re more concerned with building walls and designating who is and is not a Christian than they are concerned with helping the poor the disenfranchise, the immigrant, the widow and the orphan . If they would get on with the business of Christ many who have deconstructed would be thrilled to come back to them.

I guess the question that I have is … Pre deconstruction, what was Rhett’s foundation? And truly. I guess only God and Rhett can truly know that and in some sense, that goes for every single person on this earth.

If the church would focus on being the hands and the feet of Christ in this world by helping the poor, the needy, the suffering, the orphan and the widow, then people would be able to see the truth of Christ, don’t them. Many who are deconstructing, are disappointed in their faith tradition, and their lack of the light of Christ within them.

The mind of God is foolishness to the carnal mind (1 Corinthians 2:14): The natural man cannot receive the things of God; it is foolishness to those who are perishing (1 Corinthians 1:18). For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? but we have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16). Those who do not perish listen to Christ’s words; we do not follow the voice of strangers-the traditions of man. It is man who says Jesus was not created; it is man who undermines the power of the Father, the only true God. They say Jesus is God although both Jesus and John the Baptist said *no man has seen God/the Father at **_any time_* (John 5:37, John 1:18) and many have seen Jesus, even to this day. They say God has a mother although it was God the Father himself who created Jesus and Mary. Jesus himself tells us his Father is the only true God (John 17:3), but this is foolishness to those who are dying. But to us that live, there is only one God, and one Lord (1 Corinthians 8:6). We are to never go against the words of Jesus, because his words belong to the Father-and it is the Father’s words that is life everlasting (John 12:49-50). Amen.
