🇵🇰 Well, it's our last day in Pakistan! And we're in the old part of Lahore. So as a fun last day, I thought I would walk around the streets and show you the best part of the country: the people! Almost no one learns Urdu, and so having learned Urdu, you get really unique conversations and interactions with the people. Hope you enjoy.

Some translations for Chris. The horse guy said that he hires our the horse for weddings, ie as part of a horse and carriage, or for a groom to ride on. Traditionally grooms would ride on a horse, so some people still like to do so just for a bit of ceremony, even just for a minute or so for the wedding films. The guy with the orange phone was telling you that the song he was listening to was a tribute to the "friends of Allah", or Wali-Allah as we refer to them as. This is a term used in our part of the world to refer to pious people/Saints. Islam spread in Pakistan based on the teachings of these peoples and their missionary work. There is a strong tradition of poetry and folk music praising God, the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and often saints too. I couldn't help but laugh at you getting directions from Lahoris. It's a running joke that you'll get all sorts of different directions in Lahore. The concept of atheism is pretty unknown in Pakistan.

What a wonderful history the region had, sadly all pakistani boast about is nothing but the muslim invasions and the actual ancestors of each and every Muslim person of Pakistan were actually Hindu.

Hey Chris wanted to give you a little input I wish I was there I would've loved to accompany you: 1. a lot of curious people and a lot of small vendors would rather take foreigner's currency for the collection... 2. That Lassi is too creamy so it can have a layer on your throat stayed for a while, that's another reason you're loosing your voice if you experience something of a sort , it's a good idea to have something warm, even just a little warm honey water... 3. Although it's very different from the west and sometimes western people might get offended but locals here can't understand the fact that someone can be an atheist, they think that people believe differently in God, but everyone does believe in God so they they'll keep on repeating the question and then due to the language barrier they think they're not able to communicate it to you. 4. You picked on the keyword mota wala for Lassi, it's very common to mend names and make nick names in Pakistan so the key for Lassi wala was "Jaida" which the guy who was giving you directions kept repeating.

The not understanding you have no religion is something I first discovered at 15 years old. I am from the South of England and my parents took me on holiday to Butlins in Scotland. In a youth club there I met some Northern Irish kids around my own age. One of their first questions was "Are you Protestant or Catholic?" At that time I truly did not know what that meant and said I didn't know. They laughed at me and said "What's your religion?" I said I didn't have one and they looked genuinely shocked. Next they said that "You must have a religion, everyone has one!" although they weren't revealing theirs yet I could tell they were being a little hostile and I was like, "No, I don't have a religion." and they appeared to struggle with that answer because they are all looking at each other funny. The line of questioning continued and they asked "OK, but what is your father's religion?" Well, he doesn't have one so I said "He's doesn't have one either." They looked a bit upset by this answer and went up a generation again, "So what was your grandfather? Protestant or Catholic? You must be one or the other!" and I could only answer that I didn't know. They really did appear as baffled by my answers as I was with their questions. We ended up dropping the subject after I pulled out a 50 gram pouch of tobacco and offered them all a roll-up. They got friendlier at that point. I was worried for a bit that they wanted to beat me up. Up until then they were all looking at each other, deciding what to do with out actually saying anything.

The smaller highland Scottish communities and Ireland prob tend to be more religious. The question over your religion may form part of others building up an opinion about you, whether it should or not. Perhaps even more so in countries such as Pak in which gov and religion are thought to be heavily merged (at least in comparison to Europe). Then again, even in the UK and some other European countries in which the majority that don't collect a pension do not really practice, religion is still engained in society on some level, non practicing people may still marry in churches, baptise children, celebrate easter and xmas which can have religious elements to it all etc. religion and state were seperated so I suppose plenty of today's laws are also based on christian belief. People just think of many practices of the country as part of the culture or tradition and little else
@Stigstigster
@Stigstigster Год назад
@@MrVidification They had grown up in N.I. in the shadow of The Troubles and their suspicion or outright disdain of other religions (Catholics I later learned). It was there I first heard the term "Fenian bastards" too but I did not understand the term at the time. It was a genuinely tense situation, again, broken by my producing a decent amount of tobacco and being willing to share some. I was so naive back then but I was still just a kid and not from a religious family or area for that matter.

This is the first video of you that I've watched. Thanks, Chris, for visiting our country. It's sad we see some messed up people around the streets, like that guy who asked you of 'dollar', or those ones bringing up politics, and that one who called you guys "dehshatgard (terrorists)" at around 14:46. Chris, how did you find your interactions with pashtun (pathan)? I found they have been very warm towards you guys. Even in karachi I found that your interaction with pathan was warm (the guy in Pakistani shirt (hashim amla), the tea seller from Chaman, Mr shinning photo guy etc). Again I found your time in peshawar was very good except the one small incident. May be as a pathan I might be a little bias but it would be interesting if you could do a short video on this topic. Lahore has been a little disappointing
