Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 730,000 subscribers on RU-vid. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

JJ William ...What are you babbling on about? Not everyone has a toxic relationship. My husband and I have been married for 10 years and have a lovely relationship. We fight, rarely, but when we do its respectfully, without screaming or slamming doors. There are good, healthy, relationships in the world. It just takes two, well adjusted people, who truly love each other, finding one another. Of course we don’t know for sure, but I’m guessing these two have a very healthy marriage. It happens. A lot.

Firstly i reallylove to see how Shane is finally, after waiting a lifetime, able enjoy the beginnings of true independence, it is wonderful! I going in the opposite direction, i started independent as an adult but now an amputated leg and ms and i rely on assistance from carers. I live in a country we get pretty good helpwith care and equipment, but i have never heard of anyone getting funded for this kind of technology. Even here in Australia we need more access to this kind of equipment. But as people see how the technology frees Shane and others i believe funding will improve. Keep on pushing!

Not that I myself ever thought she was, but I see that even more now when seeing what kind of date he made for her. One could always make a date in a fancy place in which you pay for luxury and so on. But you can feel the love between them when Shane made the date so non-materialistic - and inside the car. The date was about Shane doing something personal for her. It would be less perfect if they went to a restaurant or something. Eating in the car like that is so cute, simple and personal.

@@jeannie1renee2 I remember them saying the arm was paid for by his insurance. The van was given to them awhile back by Braun ability. Typically sponsors, Braun in this case, gives them a % for each view they get ... or ... maybe Shane has to make X amount of sponsored videos within a year as part of the deal for Braun giving them the van. Either way I’m always curious how it works with sponsors.

You two’s indomitable spirit reminds me of my Mom’s cousin and his wife. He became a quadriplegic on a lung machine after an accident. She took care of him for 17 years (I think). Even though he was one failed connection from death the whole time, they both had amazing senses of humor. So much so, he had books published and spoke many times in public. I got it from 1 of my kids who brought it home from school in October and still fighting the aftermath🤧😷...its been so horrible. Both my kids were fine in 3 days with hardly any symptoms just a little tired. But me...i was hospitalized and still not right....i hope everyone else is doing good 😊😊❤

I’m a woman that was a registered nurse then 2 years ago went out on disability because MS was diagnosed. Today I’m in one of many airports on a trip. Was supposed to be relaxing but my having to use a wheelchair is so hard. Having to rely on others to do their jobs rt in the airport etc. they broke the joystick on my w/c etc. I stumbled on you guys. I am ordering Shane’s book. And I think you are both absolutely incredible people.

Congrats Shane on your trip into the store. That must have felt so good to be able to do without anyone with you. That arm sure is amazing. As an RN I have been a caregiver most of my life and then became disabled with ankylosing spondylitis an autoimmune disease, Alpha1 Antitrypsin deficiency, and multiple other system failures due to these diseases. My husband is my caregiver when needed. I am high functioning but need assistance when my pain and fatigue get out of control. I’m so appreciative for him and his help. I don’t know what I’d do without him.

this is SO amazing!!!! the independence this arm gives Shane is incredible! so cool seeing him in the grocery store by himself and able to do it all alone. my heart is exploding you two 😍😍😍😍

This was such a sweet video!!! It must be so nice for Shane to have this newfound independence, I was so excited for him when he went into the grocery store by himself. You guys are both awesome and just so perfect for each other.

I love that Shane is able to be more independent!! It is hard not being in control of your own life! I was a caregiver for over 20 years. I was disabled about 5 years ago due to a botched surgery. I now have a melon sized hernia on the left side of my abdomen. I am afraid to go back to surgery because if they did this to me, what would they do next time! I want to thank you over and over for your videos!! Ever since this happened, I have felt no man would ever love me now. I am 59 and figured I will be alone for the rest of my life. But it is a breath of fresh air that people do look beyond the disability! And the disabled do not need to hide away from society and can have a fulfilling, meaningful life! Thank you so much for showing this and reminding those of us that have forgotten! Keep up the great work! Keep reaching for the stars!!💕

I got so freaking hungry watching this! lol That was really HUGE of Shane to go to the store by himself. I can only imagine how intimidating that must have been. Good job and well done! I have become disabled and my wife is my care giver. You two are both amazing! Thanks for sharing!
