Between the pandemic, finishing her PhD, and having a BABY... it has been a while since we have traveled and Ashton deserved a vacation. And I think I might have just pulled off the ultimate surprise.

I honestly have been smiling the whole way through this video! You all deserve this, after writing a dissertation - and just anyway! I love the villa! I bet that was a massive reward after the flight. Enjoy enjoy!!! I really want us to have time on a beach this year. We haven’t been since well before covid, and I want to make it happen this year. So get those videos out and keep me motivated to book something!

Ah wow thank you! We also were itching yo travel after COVID. We used to go more often but life happens. The villa also was a VERY nice surprise. We booked the cheapest room at the hotel but the place isn't very full still (i think COVID is still affecting Thailand pretty hard). We've really enjoyed the pool and extra room while Jack naps.

@@TypeAshton I think it’s almost even nicer when it’s a free upgrade! It’s like a little nod from fate. These holidays are so important for a couple, and great that you can relax together now. Franz & I always say in the mornings (on holiday): „You know what we have to do today? Nothing!“

Great video again. Ashton, you deserve it so much, not only for your PhD but also for overcoming your disease and becoming a mother and coordinating the works around the building process of your house. I am very glad, that the heavy investments of the german healthcare system and the educational system in you has paid off so well. Enjoy the love of your husband... and maybe you can produce one or two more little ones like you ... because we need more well mannered, good educated and open minded people here in Germany. All the best for you and I hope you will never leave.

I did a similar thing once - not on that scale, though. I was travelling a lot around Germany at that time and at one time I said to my wife not to expect me at home on Friday but to book a ticket to Frankfurt and meet me at Frankfurt main station with enough luggage for an extended weekend. Then I drove with her to the airport (she now realized that we weren't staying in Frankfurt, what she had thought so far) and only when I handed her the boarding pass she realized that we were going to Madrid for the weekend. She too was very surprised and equally happy! 👍😎 Nowadays we only travel to destinations we can reach with our electric car and don't fly anymore at all, to contribute to preserving the planet for the young ones like your Jack.

That's awesome 😍 what a thoughtful surprise. I bet that is such a wonderful memory you two won't ever forget. It reminds me a lot of a good friend of mine whose husband works for an airline. They get free Stand-by tickets and sometimes for fun they will go to the airport and either pack a "warm or cold bag" and take whatever weekend flight they can hop on last minute. I love the spontaneousness of it!

In the moment is was really stressful. I kept thinking that we would arrive in Thailand and they'd be like "no, you forgot this. go back". hahaha thankfully, it all worked out.

The cutest part was Jack playing with his toes. Hope all of you had a great time! :-) My wife and I have been married for 42 years. We bought a house right away. So, we couldn't afford a honeymoon. Two years later, we went to Sam Lord's Castle in Bel Air, Barbados. We booked just a plain room. The resort was empty because we went in off season. The hotel manager upgraded use to a room in the Castle. This was a large difference in rooms. And, it didn't cost anything extra. Really cool! We has a huge pool and staff to take care of our every needs. It was located off the main dining room. Sam Lord was a real life pirate. He decided he had captured enough treasure. So, he hired European designers and crafted men to build the place. Except for the Hotel Le Château Frontenac in Québec-City Canada I have never stayed in such a facility. I have been watching your vcasts the last few weeks. All of you are great. Thanks for the infotainment.

Hahaha we've been saying the same thing! We are learning to slow down, relax and enjoy one place for a longer time. It has been nice to do as the Germans do.

Is 2 weeks not normal? I've never lived outside of Europe but all the countries were usually around 2 weeks

@@daemonbyte EU has a minimum vacation time of 4 weeks, I think. The US don't know anything like a minimum mandatory vacation time. Most Germans get around 5 to 6 weeks, though.

@@franhunne8929 I know the legal requirements. But that doesn't say anything about how you choose to deploy them. I work with a guy that basically only ever uses vacations to make 4 day weekends. But generally most people seem to do a 2 week slot sometime and since Petra seemed surprised at that I was wondering if it was just a European thing to do a 2 week vacation slot. To me the 4 day weekend thing is stranger than a 2 week one

@@daemonbyte Ah, well, here the law is that you should not split up your vacation days that way unless there are really strange circumstances. Normally you take at the very least ONE two week vacation - because it takes that long for a holiday feeling to set in.

Congratulations Jonathan, very well done. To be honest, I was thinking and hoping of you would gift a well deserved surprise to Ashton when she got her PhD. And keeping the location a secret till arrival at the airport - wow. I also loved the fact that you've had to use all kinds of transportations - especially that you had to use a boat to finally get to your hotel. So she wouldn't know what it would look like till final arrival. And as icing on the cake, you got also surprised yourself by being upgraded. What an adventure 💖 Enjoy your time, highly deserved!

The weather has been interesting. Much more humid than German for sure. But from time to time it rains for maybe an hour or so, the Temperature drops and it's quite nice. Thanks a lot for watching and we hope you're doing great ☺️

A wonderful video. It reminds me, that during our time as expats in the US my wife dreamed of a vacation in Hawaii, the last state we had not yet seen. And so I did nearly exactly the same thing with a rescheduled "business" trip instead to North Royalton, OH to Honululu. We still (33 year later) remember this vacation and wish you the same wonderfull time in Phuket as we had in Honululu. Enjoy!

This is really a nice surprise. Considering that you've been in the USA for a long time over the Christmas holidays, it's nice that you now have again two weeks off for a great tour. Many vacation days from work in the year are an unbeatable advantage! Have a nice time, with as few mosquitoes as possible.

Thank you! Its been two years since we took a real "vacation". As much as we love visiting our families, it's more of a "trip" if you know what I mean. We certainly are very fortunate to be able to travel again. It really was a nice time to relax.

Fabulous. I didnt get to Thailand until I was 50 and hadn't realised what I had been missing....what a beautiful country, the food, the people, the culture,.the value. Lamai beach Koh Samui remains my favourite beach on earth.

That's funny: Thailand was my first guess when Jonathan said "east" and "12 hour flight". Have an amazing vacation there and don't forget to try their lobster (they usually mean "spiny lobster").

Thanks! We ate still in awe of just how beautiful this landscape is. I (Jonathan) have only been to Bangkok Airport prior, but have always wanted to do more exploring. I am really happy Ashton loves it and we get to enjoy southeast Asia.

Ah yeah they don't normally make too much of a show on our channel... Mostly because they are either napping or sniffing for squirrels on the balcony. ❤️ They are both rescue dogs that are now getting elderly. In the past we used to take them on big hikes but that kind of effort is too tough. Plus....Java isn't exactly happy about car rides. 😂

I figured all of the extra work up front with COVID documents and testing would have pushed people away... and I was right. Thailand is still recovering from a hard long-term lockdown and it was still pretty empty. Thankfully almost everything was fully up and running as it was before (at least I think.)

@@TypeAshton Yes, as tourism is the main income source for many in Thailand, the Covid restrictions hit them really hard. Some is open for business again, but others are not. There are a bunch of live cams on Samui island that i used to watch, showing the night life. Some bars and dance clubs are now open again - the biggest brothelstayed closed, and a few other places too. Probably gone bancrupt. But for someone like you it is a advantage. You can enjoy all its beauty undisturbed, and I guess the prices are good as well, since they are glad about every tourist that comes to Thailand.

nice one .... brings back memories of our 1993 trip to Thailand spending 2 full weeks on Kho Phi Phi island which is now closed except for short visits ... loved it. Back then we spent around 10 DM (before the Euro) per day for a little bungalow in the palm tree grove on the beach. Great memories ...

Haha, Jonathan staying tight-lipped and "Eisern" about staying quiet until the airport was both sweet and somewhat cruel. 😁😁 Love the travel vlog. Dealing with paperwork: weeeell, J got a huge load of experience living in Germany, the most horrible bureaucracy this planet has ever seen. 😂😂 That Ashton was NOT eloquent in the moment around 13:54 speaks VOLUMES about how astonished she was! I was SO surprised. Jonathan showed me the packet of paperwork and a look into the Thailand pass system that he had to submit all of our documentation for pre-approval by the Thai government. It was pretty intense. 😬😂

Have fun - Phuket is beautiful. For Your next beach vacation I recommend the Seychelles or/and Mauritius. Both are perfect destinations with kids, almost no time difference and beautiful beaches.

Thank you! We did the Seychelles 2 years ago when COVID was happening only in China (timed it quite well.) I ALMOST got a trip to Mauritius instead of Thailand, but I could not find a better direct flight (Condor was the only airline flying direct.) Maybe next time. :)

@@TypeAshton I hope (I am sure) You had a great time in Thailand. For flying to Mauritius Condor is not a bad choice. They do offer a decent Premium Eco Class for a good price and also a affordable business class. The new Lufthansa subsidary "Eurowings Discover" is another nonstop choice to Mauritius. We did Emirates and Turkish on several occasions and took the opportunity for stopovers on the way back in Dubai/Istanbul.

Congratulations! YTuber Alina MacLeod visited the place last year and it sadly was empty because COVID devastated not just Phuket but the entire Thai tourism industry. Hopefully, your vacation there has taken place under far happier circumstances.

We visited an elephant sanctuary yesterday and they also told us how hard COVID was for them. They had just opened in 2018 and the tourism was their main source of income to care for the rescued animals. 💔 Heartbreaking to hear of their struggles but happy they are open and welcoming visitors now.

I loved this. I assume the original plan was for Ashton to notice when looking at her boarding pass at the airport, or would it have gotten as far her noticing they were at the wrong boarding gate. Obviously Jonathan's plan had to change when he found out that Ashton was packing the wrong clothes. He would have been in the dogbox when that lovely private pool appeared and Ashton had no swimsuit. I thought the reply of 12 hours flying time to the second question was letting the cat out of the bag. Saying "at least 5 hours" would have put the Red Sea coast of Egypt and Dubai on the table as a red herring. I wonder if the idea was put in Jonathan's head by Brooks Laich surprising his wife Julianne Hough with a surprise trip to Machu Picchu. She also failed her three guesses. We've done both before. Both are about the same distance via train or car. This time we just happened to find a direct flight from FRA with a star alliance carrier.
