Put some cardboard down and put some new soil on top. I the spring, you will be able turn it easier and then add your compost. The cardboard really helped me.

Thanks for the tip! That sounds like a great idea. Right now I just have leaves piled up over it. But I think cardboard, leaves, and new soil should do the trick

FYI the above ground probably looked really good due to all the nitrogen; however, potatoes are a root crop and need more phosphorus to produce the tubers. you can try adding some bone meal and peat moss to your soil.

Thank you! I’m going to try sweet potatoes again this year and plan to soil test and amend before I plant them

😅 So true! I’ll plant them earlier next year to see if a longer season makes a difference

@@reynaandtheworld for sure! Maybe add some perlite for the compaction? Good luck!

Before harvesting potatoes you should wait for the plants to die back. I know it's hard to wait! Oh, if you find any Yukon Gold potatoes try them. They are so good, sort of creamy. Are you growing any garlic? I'm hoping the weather let's me plant in the next few days. Have a great day😊

Thanks Debbie! I waited as long as I could but the groundhog ate all the leaves while I was away on vacation. I figured the potatoes were probably not going to grow anymore without leaves and it was time to dig them up before they rot. For the white potatoes which I did plant the same day, they did die back before I dug them and I got a lot more of those ones, still small but twice as many in a smaller container

Unlike white potatoes sweet potatoes don't die back to indicate that they are ready. You have severe compaction, which didn't allow for the potatoes to form and thrive. In my garden I had to remove some of the soil and replace with lots of compost.

Thanks! That’s exactly what I was thinking. The soil was really hard and I mixed in some compost at the beginning of the season but probably it wasn’t enough. Perhaps some sand or grit would help prevent from compacting so much

Do you plant using the Moon signs? Farmers almanac or the Old Farmers almanac?
@reynaandtheworld
@reynaandtheworld 11 месяцев назад
I don't really know much about the moon signs, and I have hear of farmers almanac but have never used it for gardening. Where can I learn more?
