Surprizing ToolMaker's Vise Review

Long and slow but somewhat thorough review of a Toolmakers vise sent to me from Banggood.com . I don't claim this to be the best methods or the only methods to check this vise. I still have tons to learn about the machinist trade. This was a good opportunity for me to add a new tool to the shop and also share my thoughts on it with you. I must say that I was surprised by both the good and bad with this vise. All and all I would say this vise exceeded my expectations given my past experiences with over seas machining products. 2-1/2 Inch 63mm Quick Action Precision Machine Vice Fully Ground Hardened Tool -- goo.gl/2RGPve

I do my best to give this vise a fair review and over all I think it is a decent vise for the money. I have needed one of these for some time and hope to use it in upcoming project videos. If I made any large mistakes please let me know in the comments section or PM me. Thanks and I hope you enjoy. 2-1/2 Inch 63mm Quick Action Precision Machine Vice Fully Ground Hardened Tool -- goo.gl/2RGPve

Nicely done, informative, and honest. Thanks for bringing your approach to the table! It's just my opinion, but I think it's pretty valuable to have projects and reviews from many kinds of shops. Production shops, repair shops, prototyping, hobby, and all. They have to solve problems in different ways, work with different resources and priorities, and have machinists with wildly different backgrounds. There's so many different ways to get jobs done that it's just as valuable to me to see why a certain way was chosen, as to see the operation itself.

Very good review. Thanks. In December of last year I ordered several (5/8" shank) tool holders and inserts from Banggood. What I got was a paper envelope with the order # on it , in a plastic envelope from the post office saying it was received empty. A paper envelope with steel tooling inside! I notified BG and sent photos of the envelope, and the letter from the PO. They asked me to prove I didn't get the items by getting something official from the post office. I went to the PO and got a letter on USPS heading signed by the postmaster. After several more exchanges they sent an email asking if I wanted a refund or the products. I replied send the products. It is now April 8 and i still haven't gotten anything and don't expect to.

Good review - Thats what I expected for that vice ;) I have a bunch of chinese grinding vices scattered all over the shop and not a single one of them is what I would consider "bad".

Stefan Gotteswinter. I was surprised, I've never checked one before this and was expecting it to be much worse than it was. Other than the movable jaw grinds the vise was good. Thanks for stopping by Stefan and glad to hear you have some also.

Stefan and Steve, the Chinese produce stuff like that vice to different standards. They focus on the essentials of accuracy and save on non-essentials like the cap screw. The cap screw is hardened to Rockwell butter hardness, and that cross pin is beyond glass hard.... They focus on the important aspects of the tool, and not the peripheral parts. That vice probably cost 1/4 the cost of, say an European vice. Their fit and finish is much less, but the overall function is good. I have no problem buying Chinese tooling, etc., just be aware that quality control is relatively kind'of sort'of non-existent. For example, I bought a set of metric jobber drills where most of them would be better at removing a cork from a wine bottle than drilling a hole....! Cheers from Canada, Daniel.

From my point of view presentation does mean a lot when I am watching a Tube. I like hearing confidence in a persons voice when they are explaining what they are doing. I have learned a lot from these videos. Most of my favorite You Tube Rock stars are confident yet humble . Precise but realistic. Serious with a touch of humor. One of the greatest things i have seen on here is the ability for someone that I hold at very high esteem showing their Bozo's and how they corrected them instead of editing out their mistake and pretending they are perfect 100% of the time. It is not a place for trolling as is seen on a lot of political /social groups. The great magnet that attracts us is the unity we all share in the love of the Shop. I love soaking my brain in the knowledge found in the Machinist You Tube community. It is a much better place than the sewage of the rest of the world. LOL Thanks Steve and all the rest of the contributors.

Very well done video, Steve! I have the 3" jaw version of that vise (same maker's box), bought from HFS (Hardware Factory Store) for $42.50 and free shipping (came overnight!) It tested essentially the same as that one did, and I was impressed. I could not find any flaws in the finish. I did not test the V grooves in the movable jaw, but if I did, I would have used an equal diameter pin on the opposite side so the jaw would not cock, which takes away any hope for accuracy there. Now I will have to test the V's in my jaw... Keep up the great videos, but work on reducing their length while not leaving out content.
@SteveSummers
@SteveSummers 6 лет назад
Bob Korves The only way I could reduce the length is to leave out content, I guess i could have cut out a minute or two of indicator setup but other than that I'm not sure what I would cut. I plan to retest the side vee with a longer pin and add on the top of the comments my results.

I would not be surprised at the accuracy. They sent it to you to review, and this is what anybody should expect. They will examine their vices until they find the best one, and of course, that is what they send those who review products. Standard procedure. Now, someone like me would need to order one and check it, someone that they do not know. That would make a real review. I am glad you did get something you needed, and for free. That is a good deal.
@SteveSummers
@SteveSummers 6 лет назад
BiddieTube If that is the case I think they should do a better job, Emma spare room machine shop got sent the exact item I bought the ground precision angles and they both sucked real bad in exactly the same way. I am sure this happens, I'm just not sure in this case thats what happened. The screw was bent and the grinds were pretty far off. If I was to give this vise a grade it would be a 70 out of 100. Not good but not that bad. Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it.
@grafixbyjorj

LOL. Many reason why banggood wouldn't hand pick a tool for him, including but not limited to the fact that it took him more than an hour to check it, and if they had to check 10 to find a good one then they've spent way more on promo than they intended t :). Maybe he got lucky, but I'm sure it was luck rather than having some Chinese lab tech spend a whole day going through a box of vices to pick the best one. Regarding the V-slots, they're a convenience not a precision reference. If you you need to clamp round stock vertically or horizontally, use a proper V-block to reference off the bed, not the movable jaw.
@SteveSummers

@RobB_VK6ES 6 лет назад
It gets more fundamental than that. Banggood is only a marketing outlet, They do not make anything themselves. Armed with that info it becomes obvious they would not have the equipment or the expertise to cherry pick a product like this. The basic accuracy is most likely down to modern CNC machining practices.
@turningpoint6643
@turningpoint6643 6 лет назад
ah, but that works both ways if you think about it BiddieTube. When I bought my last lathe I had to special order it since I wanted MT 3 for the tailstock. Told the dealer I was planning to post my review of it good or bad on a lot of the home machinist forums so he should pass that along to the factory with my order. :-) I didn`t post my review of it but every test on the certificate was well under the maximum when I rechecked there numbers to be sure nothing was fudged. Now it may not have had anything done extra but it doesn`t hurt to reverse the system on them either. :-)

Thorough review, well done. I also learned a few tips for using my surface gages. I purchased one based on your review and everything measured as yours did except the width of the moveable jaw, which is smaller than the width of the fixed jaw. This makes alignment using the side faces of the jaws can't be used. I'm going to contact customer service at banggood and see what they will do about the problem. Your jaw sides seem to be very flush, probably ground at the same time. Mine were not. Otherwise super for the price. Thanks for the review!
@SteveSummers
@SteveSummers 6 лет назад
Jim Milne I believe that is on purpose, my movable jaw is also not the same width as the fixed jaw. I'm sure this is for clearance when the vise is mounted on it's side. That way you can still operate the jaw and it won't rub the mounting surface. Thanks for watching. I must say that over all I am pleased with the vise.

what most people don't realize is the products sold by importer,s like Banggood, amazon, Ebay, alibaba, etc... Dont get the cream of the crop from the factories. I once purchased two Bushnell rifle scopes from China at two different times, for one eighth the price from Bushnell. One was obviously flawed, the other was a little more difficult to find the flaw, but it was there.However both performad as well as the higher priced company sold one,s. one of the flaws was cosmetic, but the more obvious flaw was not, it was detrimental to the function of the scope, the cross hairs were slightly canted. The fact it was difficult to find the flaw in that vice, is indicative of the quality that the factory that produced it, is capable of, and probably does produce for a high end vice company or well known brand. $110 for a vice of that quality is a steal. Great review by the way.

I made several squaring blocks for the Bridgeport mill table. They are 2.25 x 8 x 10" hardened and ground 4140 with several rows of 1/2-13 tapped holes with a few 3/8-16 tapped holes in both faces. Both ends also have (4)3/8-16 tapped holes in them for a common 7" long side plate, for holding work square. There is also an additional small block that has 3 holes 90 degrees to each other. Two to hold it to the face of the block, and one threaded, in between the two to accept a set screw for applying pressure on the work-piece to the side plate. The entire bottom length of the block has 3 pieces of 5/8 fitted, hardened keys to hold it in parallel alignment to the mill table, with long 1/2 -13 bolts c-bored in from the top to t-slot nuts for the table. The TE-CO mill table hold down clamps can be used to hold work to the face, as well as C-clamps. This is a rigid set-up block that I used every day and found it invaluable. You can then make other things like large V-blocks to mount to it, for holding large round work. Hope you can picture this and make use of it.

Thanks for this review looks like this same thing is sold as Accusize on Amazon - a word of advice given what I have seen recently on other channels if you get a product given to you make sure you’re transparent about it, if you buy a product yourself without any support or kickbacks and you want to review it, make sure you let the community know; otherwise the trolls will feed. Also, sweet lathe, I look forward to learning from you.

Jeff Streak I say it was free. I am one of those who Do Not want to be mislead or sold anything. I must say I like reviews given by others as long as they are not trying to be a salesman. I have seen other producers actually push items and not expose the fact that they are benefiting form it and that really makes me loose faith in them real quick.

Very nice and in depth video Steve, but I have a question about the v's being out of center in the vice. I can understand if a rod being machined is 2/10 out on an angle in the v, but as far as the v's being dead center (30 thou out) in the vice jaw, I don't see how that matters since you will clamp your vise down on the table and then touch off either side of your part and determine center from that. In other words, your part could be 2" from center and still machine your part after touch off. I might be missing something here so if I am please help me to understand. Thanks Steve

Steve I'm watching this two years down the line. One thing I think you did miss was that when you were "hinging" the vice on its base it was spinning about the very end of each end of the bed of the vice that could have indicated that it was hollow in the middle of the base. You determined that the movable jaw bed was a parallel with the surface plate but you didn't turn it upside down and put the movable jaw bed on the surface plate with the fixed jaw hanging off the side of the plate and indicate along the foot of the vice to see if it was actually straight or maybe hollow as I suspected. Other than that it's a fair and honest review of the product, even better for you that it was free!. As a matter of interest what was the Banggood retail price in USD at the time of the review? Cheers from over the pond in October 2020

When you wiped all the oil off of your vise did you re-oil it before use or plan to after use? Silly question but really curious as mine is really rusty from me touching other rusty tools and having that rust on my gloves, that rust is now for some reason on my toolmakers vises. Also if you do re-oil it could you tell me what I should use? Having oil all over the vise makes cleaning milling chips off of it a real pain being it sticks to the oil on the vise.
@temptorsent
@temptorsent 6 лет назад
Since you know the ways are parallel to the foot, and the face and back of the fixed jaw are parallel to your ability to measure, you can get a much more sensitive square measurement by standing the vice on end and comparing the ways and foot near the opposite end.
@samrodian919
@samrodian919 3 года назад
The ways my not be parallel to the foot as Steve did not check the foot for parallel to the surface plate. So you can't assume that the foot and ways are parallel to each other in the centre.

I'm pretty sure that somewhere in the factory where they make these hardened and properly ground little vises for quite low money is a CNC grinder or two to make these. What I've handled these they have all been good as far as tolerances & dimensions go and they cost what, 100 doll hairs?

You have a good vise there. I have a 6" magnetic cyclinder square if you want to check closer. When you read .0001 or less in 6" you have a great vise. If the 1-2-3 block is good you could clamp it up and read the top edge, it would give a more accurate reading for squareness. Like everyone else that one surprised me and is more than enough for all jobs unless doing gage work. The .002 reading can be easily be ground in with a surface grinder but is not necessary as it is just clearance. Also your surface plate is pretty flat- I have seen some get different readings just sliding the surface gage around!

Definitely interesting. I wonder how much of the jaw error was due to the short pin, using a long pin would support the whole width. With the amount of slop in there it going to move, so for a really accurate test you would have to test with the jaw on the surface plate. Metrology is definitely a rabbit hole once you start lol

One of the companies which I have bought tools (like this) from advertises a toolmaker's sine vise and claim it's within .0002. I will probably order one (have desperately needed one in the past for some one-off jobs). Even if it's not within the .0002 as advertised I can regrind it to that spec or closer(I work in a tool and die shop, I can do that sort of stuff)

We bought a Palmgren angle visefor the mill, expecting it to be "Palmgren Quality". If we want to cut a 45* angle one side of the part needs to be shimmed .007. That's unacceptable to say the least. I was glad to see you review this toolmaker's vise for that reason.

Interesting Steve - I have the same size vice which I have used very little - similar results on the fixed jaw and slightly better on the V's but still enough out to make certain tasks a pain. Its on the list to 'modify' so its better. What kind of movement do you get on the moving jaw as its clamped ? It must try to skew a little as it clamps and I (maybe incorrectly) had assumed that was part of the errors I got when checking the pin readings. Good score though - free vice for an afternoons review filming ;-) All the best Mat

Can't beat the price, that's for sure😀. In reality this is probably something I would have bought anyway, I couldn't justify spending 100s of dollars on a name brand grinding vise. Just glad I could share my findings with everyone, that way if they are in the same boat as me when it comes to having little extra money they can have an idea of what to expect. Nice score.Dead nuts accurate. Replace that socket head cap screw with a nice one and you have a great vise. FYI, you could have avoided the gage on the ways by inference. Simply determining perpendicularity of the fixed jaw outside with the gage on the granite, as you did in the end, and then sweeping the inside of the fixed jaw for parallel which you did earlier on, with the vise on end, proves square without having the gage off the granite.
@WilliamTMusil

Safe to ignore the bad result with the pin. The screw is bent, and the bent screw will torque that moving jaw around, adding a bit of soft wire on the moving jaw side would likely give a better result without a replacement socket head cap screw. A new high quality screw will improve your results. The .030 though, if the centering of that vee is important, grind .015 off one side of the vise, or put it in the shaper. :-D

Michael Marriam I am not sure why it had a dip in the middle I have seen holes affect grinders, my 1-2-3 blocks will show bumps in the readings with the tenths indicator. I was not seeing humps just a gradual change

Many have expressed that the machining is getting better as time goes by. As with anything if you persist in a profession you can improve. Just think how good or bad a mill might have been in China 20 years ago and now they have scrapped that mill and now use a much better one. So good things can be better.

Would have been nice if the holes in the side were slotted out to allow clamping from the side. The only parameter you missed but probably can't measure is the hardness of the jaws. Nice review overall looks like a pretty decent tool. BTW Tom is a very knowledgeable fellow but I am sure he did not devise that test method he merely reported it. All of these methods have their roots in basic principals drilling down to the basic requirements and how to achieve such an outcome . Principals like the classic 3 plate test
@SteveSummers

Rob B I agree, Tom L is my source for the method and as I am sure you know has a video out on it. I mentioned Tom only because people can go and watch this and different methods on finding square. I tried the file method and it is hard but I have no method of determining just how hard it is. I decided to remove that section of video. Thanks for watching Rob

Great execution of measuring even though you claim it is not the best. Sure, we can start nitpicking with temperatures etc., but for all intents and purposes I didn't find an actual flaw in your methods. Well, except one little thing. When you were measuring the V's, the only thing you could have improved is to have an end mill or round rod long enough to cover the whole V length. Now the small length affects how the movable jaw rocks/tilts as it is not clamping evenly across the face. And one way to measure is to just lay the movable jaw on the plate from its reference surface and then put a pin against the V and measure. This way you reduce the errors as you have nothing extra in the setup.

Get ready for the China haters and those who will accuse you of selling out, making infomercials for Banggood, etc. Anyway, thanks from me for providing a clear look at a product that I’d have to otherwise purchase sight unseen. By the way, I think that you should always expect complementary readings on your 1-2-3 block, i.e., if you read +2 tenths on one side, you should read -2 tenths on the other side. Otherwise, you are proving that those sides are NOT parallel.
@SteveSummers
@SteveSummers 6 лет назад
Paul Mathews LoL, I really prefer usa products myself but given the money they they cost they would be no way I could afford one. Not at all worried about trolls. This is an honest review. @grafixbyjorj

His readings on the 1-2-3 were good, they are relative not absolute because he doesn't have a master square to set absolute zero. If he has already checked that they are parallel and then gets the same reading on both sides using the method shown, he has shown that they are at right angles to the face he is resting on. If he had got +2 on one side and -2 on the other, then his 1-2-3 isn't square but he knows that true square is at zero.

@whidbeyman
@whidbeyman 6 лет назад
grafixbyjorj I don’t disagree with you. I am adding the assertion that a 123 block with parallel sides will always have complementary readings on the 2 sides.
@grafixbyjorj
@grafixbyjorj 6 лет назад
If it's parallel but not square then yes, the readings on a gauge which has been set to zero on a true square will be complementary. If it's parallel and square, the readings will be the same on both sides, and it doesn't matter what number that is, because it's just an offset.

Naturally when you say “overseas stuff” and quality I assume you are thinking about chines rubbish. In my experience, US made stuff would find it to be a good challenge to be compared to high end German and Japanese stuff. Those two countries know their precision better then most. Great video as always as well.

The standard of precision of Japanese and German products has nothing to do with the Country, it reflects the amount of money (the price) people are prepared to pay for the product. The first set of ring spanners I bought 60 years ago were Branded aged ore, I though that meant German made and I was happy as Larry...........I later discovered they were made in India, Not too happy I thought but....................they still serve me well!!!! It's nice to see all those measurements, but I would have liked to see the vice actually used on the mill to see how well it holds a workpiece and how accurate it is if you try to mill something like a cube using this vice. Take something like a small block of aluminum, mill it into a cube using this vice's fixed jaw as the main reference, and then measure the cube when you are done to see if the cube is nice and parallel, etc. That's the real test.
