How does the size and weight of 18/21, 16/19, and OEM wheels affect the overall performance of your Surron or Segway X260? We were dying to know the answer and so we did what any other racer would do, we put them on a track to find out!! Which tire combo can reach the top of our leader board? Watch to find out!

Why didn't we put the Surron on a REAL motocross track?
We went back and forth on this decision and in the end there were 2 strong arguments against going to a local MX track. First, consistency, MX tracks are often changed multiple times per year, and depending on the person doing the grooming they can vary quite a bit due to things like how much the dirt is ripped up, how much water is put down, etc. We felt like if we used an MX track we would have a hard time getting consistent conditions throughout the months/years of our testing and we were searching for a track that has been consistent for years which is the one we are using. Secondly, MX tracks are designed for much more powerful bikes and testing a Surron on a full blown MX track would have been more of a test of our personal riding skills rather than the bike itself and the components. The desert turn track we are using tests the bike more than it tests our skills and the almost 360 degree berm turn is perfect for testing throttle smoothness which is going to be crucial with Controller upgrades and the tunes offered in them. The stock controller was a lot like a light switch in that turn making it hard to be smooth and I'm hoping for improvement with our BAC4000 tuned by EBMX.

Give us some feedback on the length of this video. We know it's long, we tried to edit it down more, but we felt the information and content was worthy of the time. What do you think? In a video like this where we are doing a HUGE test that took us a lot of time to put together, does that justify the length of the video, or do we need to make it shorter next time? Thank you!!

Good length. When there is good information, the longer length is less of an issue that when it’s mostly just for the visual experience. Is the video attention seeking? ... or is it more informative? Then if it is informative... subdivide it into categories based on the density of the information and level of knowledge and skill needed. Obviously the more dense and / or difficult, the longer it can be. That might be a good way to differentiate.

@KNKLHEAD
@KNKLHEAD 2 года назад
Fantastic, fantastic testing. Thank you so much for the information. I am riding in Northern PA most often. Crank like crazy through the 4 x 4 trails, but limited on the deep woods (!) single track trails due to traction (think muddy ruts, wet, off-camber tree roots, etc.). I find mostly the back stock Sur Ron tires wash out in the rear (much more so than front) -- and I'd like to start by replacing the rear. I am inclined to just go with a 19" tire replacement for now (wasn't sure you had a "stock rear rim" option?) but will look into your rear-wheel 16" . I have a stock Sur Ron, and 100% woods riding.
@ChargedCycleWorks
@ChargedCycleWorks 2 года назад
We have TONS of 70/100-19 tires in stock including the Kenda Trackmaster which is one of the more popular choices due to it's blocky paddle-like tread design. If you want something a bit larger than the Kenda the Dunlop MX33 and MX53 have a bit more volume to them. While technically these are all front tires, they work better than the OEM CST tire that comes on the bike. Check out our website we have a lot of choices. Thanks!
@ChargedCycleWorks
@ChargedCycleWorks 2 года назад
Also, if you are interested in a 16" rear, we just got a large shipment of 16" rims which have been incredibly hard to source the last few months. As soon as our next hub run arrives (very soon) we'll be posting many 16" wheels to our website, so be sure to hit the notify button to be the first to know when they go on sale. :)

Good test! But what about range? Can you do next test - 10 laps, starting with 100% battery, how many % will it lose with each wheels setup?
@ChargedCycleWorks
@ChargedCycleWorks 3 года назад
You are absolutely correct, we actually did track range via battery percentage, but 1/2 way through the 16/19 test the handlebars twisted (didn't have direct mount stem) and riding the bike back to fix it ruined the range testing. We do believe the track is the best way to test range however, because trying to do range tests in natural environments hasn't worked, every time I put two people on the same bike and ride the same thing the range is different due to how aggressive the rider is...essentially the more time spent near full throttle the more energy used, so two people riding the same thing can have very different results...making range testing a pain! It must be the same person (weight) riding the exact same conditions at the exact same speeds to be accurate. We will do this when we have the time.

Hey Mark! by mid-june, hopefully sooner. Spokes land next week, rims are on the shelf ready to go, and our billet aluminum 32H hubs which are compatible with many more rims (like Tusk) should also arrive by then. The biggest hold-up we have had is the shortage of Excel 16" 36H rims compatible with OEM hubs, this is why we decided months ago to CNC our own 32H hubs, too many limitations with the OEM 36H hubs. Plus we get to anodize them in other colors: Black, Gold, Blue, Purple :) Thanks for the patience, we know everyone is anxiously awaiting.

It was probably that the 18/21 set the heavier rider to the rear more for more acceleration coming out of the turns while at the same time, the larger front wheel help him go through bumps and flow nicely through the turns. Whereas the same thing happening with the lighter rider, has much less effect on him. Basically the heavier the rider, the more dramatic the tires have an effect... evening out the overall weight difference. Just my guess.
@ChargedCycleWorks
@ChargedCycleWorks 3 года назад
I'm sure the larger diameter helps slightly with bumps, but on this particular track it was the traction in the corners that let Brian (200lbs) go full speed on 18/21 but not the 16/19. The sticky compound rear tire we used on the 16" wasn't holding it's line through the turns at full speed with his weight and causing him to let off the throttle through the turns. We'll go back with an MX tire on the 16" to re-test to get a more apples-to-apples test between the two. We also need to put larger sprockets on both bikes, but especially the 18/21, it needs a 60t sprocket...we'll do it all again and beat these times...and of course we must see what a BAC4000 and suspension does :)

Great question, give us a couple days and then come back to the website and search for "CST". I really would love to reduce our stack of OEM tires! The only bad thing is shipping will be close to $10 each (lower 48) so that will just about double the cost of the tire, but it's still cheaper than a $60 tire + shipping.

@ChargedCycleWorks
@ChargedCycleWorks 3 года назад
Yes it's a 90/100x18 and they fit amazing on the Surron. We do dish slightly. We did remove the kickstand, however there are ways to modify your kickstand if you want to keep it. WE NEVER TRIM KNOBS, EVER! We strongly believe if you have to trim knobs off your tire then you've made a bad choice in wheel/tire selection. This is off-road riding NOT NASCAR! :)
@ChargedCycleWorks
@ChargedCycleWorks 3 года назад
Also, we do experiment with 100/100x18 tires from time to time, we were really excited when we found the Shinko R546 100/100x18, because it's narrow like a 90, but there are two problems with it, it's very tall, and it weighs 12lbs and for those reasons we will not be selling them, the 90/100x18 is a much better choice for these bikes.

@@ChargedCycleWorks Thanks for the response. Ya Im not a big fan of Nascar lol. But honestly Im not a big fan of cutting or dishing. I was hoping you didnt dish with this tire. Torn between your 16/19 setup or 18 21. But I think you may have answered my question since I am not a fan of dishing either. I rode a bike that had 3/8" dish and I could feel it. If I go with this tire on your 18" how much will you need to dish it for me? Thanks
@ChargedCycleWorks
@ChargedCycleWorks 2 года назад
We cannot feel 1/8" of dishing. And the hubs we manufacture and build with are already "dished" so that you do not have to use spoke tension to do this, the hub lobes have been moved 1/8" away from the sprocket. The 90/100 rear tires are simply amazing on the surron.

Come on guys, put the times for the KTM in there. I bet it will get close for the BAC4000 and BAC800 bikes. For those of us who are considering racing hare scrambles, this would be a good data point. Over the length of a 90 - 120 minute race, I think the reduced energy you expend to hustle a lighter bike so that at the end of race the pace will swing in favor of the Sur Ron.
@ChargedCycleWorks
@ChargedCycleWorks 3 года назад
We agree, we'll get the KTM's out there. On this particular track the Surrons are likely quicker through the turns (lighter) and the only real advantage the KTMs' will have is the long straight and the suspension doing a better job with some of the braking and acceleration bumps. Curious, have you attempted to ride your Surron at race-pace for 90+ minutes? I don't think the battery will last...full throttle riding zaps it in about 20 miles or even less. Would love to hear about your experience with this.
@ChargedCycleWorks
@ChargedCycleWorks 3 года назад
oh, one more thing we've noticed about riding aggressively with the surrons on the DNM suspension. It's brutal on your hands and wrists and other body parts, despite the light weight bike. If you are going to race you will want to upgrade the suspension. I would recommend upgrading suspension before the power, suspension is severely holding these bikes back from full performance and not wrecking your body. Unfortunately the bike industry is sold out of suspension until 2022 :( we're working on other options such as DNM fork tunes in the meantime.

It is something between a mountain bike and a mini bike, I don't understand why you are using such wheels But I understand the business The Chinese have moved the world and the Americans make quick money... You need the classics while you still have time, but in fact there are already heaps of them everywhere... @@ChargedCycleWorks It's not that I don't like 5 of these bikes... I plan to buy a new model this year too, even if there are minimal differences in components, it's basically not the same as the 2022 model. Just a bigger 40ah battery, which is a little better. The last time I had a 34, 5. ah. The other one, if I'm not mistaken, was 37ah But that's minimal differences. I tried several types of tires, but in the end I bought another new set of Shinko sr 241, although difficult but probably the best choice in my opinion. it's more like something in between, that is, the main road is a full forest road, the terrain is not too difficult, and he gave up winter riding, God knows... You are talking about $1000. In our country, it is the euro, so for me it is about €800, which is almost nothing for me to buy this bike pair components for modification, and I'm talking about stupid things such as a better headlight, handlebars, footrests, rosette, chain, headlight switch, Vistuha, tires, and I've already told myself very clearly that a few things still need to be replaced with better parts - modify and we are not talking about changing the chassis - front and rear suspension, high battery capacity + Controller and other items such as R 16 rear discs or the original stock R 19, let's talk. After another thousand million or euros, I think it's nonsense to spend another 1000... For that, it's worth it that I'll buy a more powerful alternative right out of production like the Surron, because this bike still has a mountain-level chassis bike with the only difference that it is also heavy, especially in difficult terrain, not at all as agile as a Motocross rider would expect, unlike a Motocross Enduro or better advice to drink bike dirt... it has a completely different suspension permeability = chassis performance... Urgently terrible Really inflexible passes over hard obstacles, I like this bike, but longer riding causes pain, the person is quite destroyed by it, but maybe shorter people, on average 150 cm 160 cm, I feel more comfortable even longer, but the taller people, I definitely doubt lifting the whole bike and I don't think it's nice at all cool, it doesn't look good anymore, I know some people literally make it a fashion tuning = merry-go-rounds But you look at it differently, they make a beautifying tuning re he's lying and he certainly wouldn't take it off-road into the forest

the internet is full of you all praising how great it is and at the same time you can also ride this bike even in its original condition, of course ok with minor modifications mainly it needs a bigger size it's a bit Small... The Chinese made it for their body type and when I see all those superstructures on it make me want to laugh, it spoils the overall design of this bike, as I wrote, it is not an Enduro or any Motocross. But it is basically an electric bike with higher performance, and that is the most proof, not these giant wheels and power adjustment, etc... For that money, you can have two more, at least one bike like this, new, simple stupidity, who would put so much money into it, wheel recommendation and performance... After all, you need to buy a proper motorcycle and not throw it into useless 🤟🏼🤦🏻‍♀️

We talk about this a lot with customers and we always warn them when they go down the path of a $8,000+ surron. But the fact is there are a lot of people out there that do not want a full sized gas motocross bike with a clutch and gearbox and 60hp to control. It's more about the giant goofy grin on their face and having the $ to afford the hobby. These bikes bring out the 10 year old inside of you, it's quite magical.

@@ChargedCycleWorks The Chinese knew what they had produced, this is exactly money-oriented marketing... Because when a person buys this bike, he will first claim that it is great as it is, there is no need to do anything with it, but two weeks ago, he already starts thinking about replacing the higher handlebars and gradually it's already going and still something, but it's basically just for the feeling and in time he'll find out that it was useless. And as I wrote, the only thing is to increase the power and put as much battery there - a bigger one so that it should perform the maximum, but in truth this bike is not at all suitable for high speed, rather it is dangerous... And if we are talking about difficult terrain where a person is going to go crazy on this So it will also cost him some pain, since the chassis is very poor, the rear suspension will also lose its shock absorber... But the stock front fork is very poor... And putting another 1000 dollars or euros into this is nonsense, in my opinion, you will be happy for a week and then you'll get over it and you'll realize that you've wasted money, it was possible to drive it even in its original condition, ok, maybe with a minor modification - modification, but nothing extreme, because people literally want to change everything on it, they just leave the basic RAM and otherwise the complete set everything for exchange, so I would already be looking for another motorcycle or bike and not after sur-ron where he wants to buy this bike, so he should mainly be satisfied and keep himself in check and above all not worry about what he will modify next week and ride in that factory condition, you don't need to deal with it too much because they are just unnecessary worries. But when a person is dissatisfied, he will be dissatisfied, I will still not be enough for him even if he changes everything. Because they found out that you could already buy a proper machine - a machine and not this mountain bike for that, it's best to leave it as it is and just ride it, don't deal with other things around it, you have to have fun with it, that's all

That's why these bikes are so popular, for LESS THAN THE PRICE OF A GOOD MOUNTAIN BIKE you are having an absolute blast! And if you want to make it faster and more fun there is a huge aftermarket behind it. EXACTLY LIKE A JEEP, a bone stock Jeep is pretty dang good, but the aftermarket can turn that Jeep into anything that you can imagine.

you all just say what is the best combination and blah blah blah bullshit... Everyone buys what suits him or try it, you can never judge what the other person says, everyone has different priorities, this is just whether you are sales, how to make money from bullshit 😂

We have a lot of very happy customers that would argue that none of this is BS. Sounds like you need to ride one :)
