+Sid Sauer I spent a year living in Hilo and I miss it SO much. My favourite place in the entire world. We lived in Mauna Kea Shores right on Kalanianaole by Carlsmith... so beautiful to go jogging late at night and then jump into the ocean and swim with the sea turtles with all the stars overhead and the coquis singing. They also eat tons of fire ants.

+Ian Spragg LOL sounds like me. After living in Hilo, Hawaii, where there are huge numbers of them (much higher population density than now in Puerto Rico), I got so used to them... the perfect white noise for sleep. When I moved here to Chile, the first week or so, it was so quiet at night that I could barely sleep at all.

These coqui took a long while to get used to in Hawaii when a colony accidentally hitchhiked on a cargo ship from Puerto Rico to Hilo, HI, but now they are nice, as I live on the wet windward side of the Big Island, that has a climate like a tropical rainforest. Especially this video is done a nice soothing way. Thanks. I can share with my Mainland friends.

I have a friend, who lives in Hawaii, he was telling me about the little frogs. He said, lots of people hate them, but he loves to hear them at night, puts him to sleep. I live in Ohio, a large lake. It is (Buckeye Lake ). I have frogs at night, Bull Frogs, I also love to hear them at night. Sort of relaxing. DAVID
@vorpal22
@vorpal22 6 лет назад
+David Burkey Yup... Hawaii has a very mixed opinion of the coquis. Most of the people who move to the Big Island love the coquis, but many of the people who have lived there their whole lives remember the time before the coquis and hate them. I absolutely adored them. I miss them so much.

@@Poppy_Arruti-PR721 Okay. So what? The original Nene is the probably the Canadian goose. The original earlier humans were hominids. The coqui has thrived on the Big Island of Hawaii and is dying off in Puerto Rico. These beautiful, loud, charming little frogs are fantastic, and I'm glad they have a new home where they're safer from threats than PR. I'm sure PR is a great place and I would love to visit. It's just sad that the coquis are dying there. It's not an insult to the people of PR (it's almost certainly not their fault) and it's not misappropriation of the frog: Hawaiians don't identify with and many of them don't want it. I absolutely love them: going to sleep to the chirping of the coquis is one of the best things in the world.

I went to St. John for the first time for my honeymoon. When we stepped out of our room the first night, I knew it was the coqui as I heard about them from a friend from Catania PR. What a relaxing sound. I listen often as it puts me back on Island time. Good work sir.

Coming from Venezuela (where I grew up to the sound of these frogs and other night critters singing in the night) to Arizona, where I now live and study, has showed me marvelous fauna which have characteristic sounds; however, these frogs, for me, it's like hanging out in the porch of my grandfather's house, while reading myself into the night, while a light coffee guayoyo (americano-like).

it is sad to see how people remember Hilo by the noise of the coqui frogs. To us who have lived the aloha of Hilo, we miss the peace, quiet and solemnity Hilo was blessed with. We could hear our heart-beat, and most important, we could hear The Spirit of God speak through the wind, the leaves, the palms, and the scents of the flower perfuming right into the conscience of our souls. These frogs have invaded our land, taken our peace and quiet away, eaten our friendly insects causing our toads to become extinct, our fruit trees are not being pollinated like before, and yet, these mainlanders and millenniums continue to praise these irritating invaders as heroes to steal the aloha from Hawaii. Catch some Coqui Frogs and bring them home so you can Stay home and enjoy the traffic and mainland noise there. The Puerto Ricans will be so very happy to remember their home.

Monserrate hermanito, Boriken is represented and remembered for the endurance de los Indios at the hands of the Catholic Church to a point of existence. Our struggle is who our land of the Valliant and Noble Lord and not a reptile represents. The "Qoqui's" sound is pleasant at a distance for a short period. If not my friend, watch your T.V. progrmas and play the above sound tract of the qoqui, throughout the night. It's romantic, the sound of the reptile, especially on a beautiful Caribbean night. But the Indio of the Caribbean deserves our respect and nit a pretty little reptile. Gracia Monserate for your comment.

Hi Nelson, after read your words I realized that you had never lived in Puerto Rico. Coqui, "a reptile"! It' is a frog. Nelson your roots are probably from Puerto Rico but you have not idea how we feel or what represent a Boricua. You don't even spelled "Coqui" right. Nothing is above our Coqui. Tainos Indians are just 1/3 of our heritage, our past. The Coqui still co-exist we us today. Leave, the Bronx and Phillis and all the big cities and spend time not in San Juan or at city but in the country, deep on the center of the Island. Then you can be able to talk intelligent. My intention is not to put you down but, nothing more Puertorriqueno that mofongo, lechon, arroz con pollo and our COQUI. Have a great day.
